All of the rumors on the net have the next xeon 32nm chips (with 6 cores) arriving on 3-16-2010. It looks like it is based on a 5600 chipset. Has anyone seen any concrete info that would indicate that these new procs would be compatible with the 5500 chipset? I know they are to be lga1366, but that may mean nothing.

My understanding of it is they will work but will need a BIOS update. Some vendors will release updates the day of the processor release, and some will release updates weeks, months, or even a year after the new processors release. So wait to see if a BIOS update is available for the specific board before buying the new processors. I kind of got burned by Asus a few years ago when quad core Opteron processors came out because they didn't update their BIOS to support them for about a year (after I had already bought the processors). Cheers!

Seems AMD will get 6 cores too.

AMD has had six core Opteron processors on the market for quite a while now that work in current socket F systems. This quarter they're launching the 12 core Opteron processors on the new platform with DDR3 and socket G34. They're codenamed Magny Cours. Cheers!
