View Full Version : Random squares in space animate to form sphere?
moodyahab 02-05-2010, 01:07 AM Hey friends, any help appreciated -
Doing some motion graphics for a studio marketing piece. The shot concept: A bunch of square panels are floating in space with different video clips playing on each one. They fly back away from camera and all come together to form a sphere, at which point the textures change and it becomes an Earth.
Any thoughts on how to do this without too much hand animation?

Sorry - a few more details. They're looking for an 8-second shot. The amount of panels should be pretty high. Probably about 600. That's including the back of the sphere, the side not facing camera... I imagine we can get away with putting stills on some of these panels instead of video.

This would be very easy to do if you are using lightwave 9.6... If your not?... I wouldn't even bother trying to do it in LW. If you are... I would have a look at dponts poly move node. That will get you most of the way there. Also... I think the easiest way to go about the video would be to uv the sphere and then put all 600 vids in one large vid and map it using the uvs. This would ensure that you only had to deal with one vid file in LW, but would still have different vids on each poly.
this vid will give you a good starting point...

edit... you could probably do this from LW 9.0 up. Doesnt have to be 9.6, but its probably best.

Sounds like you want to do something like this:

Really straight forward if so.

what method did you use proton... morphs... particles? Looks good...
I thought of a few other cool things that he could do to make this work really good and easy. He could use the particle age to determine when the polys move to there globe position and also to determine when the texture changes from the vids to the globe. This would make set up very easy and fast with good results...

I used HardFX but a Morph could work if it just needed to be a basic motion.
