View Full Version : Which keyboard & mice?
LemLem360 02-04-2010, 06:15 AM Hi guys, i'm new in this forum and i'm starting 3D animation. I would like to know if you have a specific model of keyboard and mice that you could recommand for a beginner like me that is following 3D animation court of 1 year. For my setup I have a 8 cores Macpro but i'm running on windows vista with the mac mice & keyboard. Do you have advices for me?
Thank you!,

try some in a store and see which is most comfortable for you, everyone is different. I've got a cheap Logitech ultra-flat keyboard and a Logitech G5 mouse (fully weighted) on a 36"x18" Boogiebug mouse surface...suits me fine
I can't think of a specific keyboard that one would need for 3d, but I recently picked up the Microsoft Natural Ergo 4000 and I really like it. I've never had an ergonomic keyboard so I didn't know what to expect, but it's a lot more comfortable to use than any keyboard I've ever had... which comes in handy when you spend way too much time in front of the computer.

I too would go with anything comfortable.
For keyboard, I would also go with either the Microsoft Natural Ergo 4000 ($30) or Microsoft Comfort Curve 2000 ($17). I currently use a logitech keyboard and this works great too. My mouse is just a basic 3 button optical mouse. I'm currently looking at the 2 keyboards mentioned and maybe the Razer Deathadder for my new keyboard and mouse.

Actually there are no mice & keyboard manufactures which are specilized for 3D Animation production - I know some keyboards made for Video- and Sound production only. It really doesnīt matter what you take for Animation tasks. I prefer a keyboard with soft-touch keys and a laser mice with tracking ball beside. Other professionals prefer just a Wacom.
So itīs up to you, go in the store and check what is the most comfortable input device for you.

Thank you guys, I wanted to buy this set, but now after having read your posts i think it's a useless spending. Logitech MX5500 (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/keyboards/keyboard_mice_combos/devices/3481&cl=ca,fr)
Jettatore

Any keyboard with standard F1 - F12 keys and a full Numpad will work. Any 3 button mouse, usually the scroll wheel clicks and works as a 3rd button... I prefer the brands Logitech, Microsoft and Razer, they all tend to make nicely designed products, durability/longevity varies by model.

That's personal preference. Go test them out at a store like Bilious suggested. Just make sure it has all the function buttons and the numpad, as a lot of software packages use those for various hot-keys. I would recommend however some sort of Wacom drawing tablet or equivalent. That will come in handy.
Added: This is my keyboard, it's backlit so I can see the buttons when I'm awake and glued to the computer at 3am. I love it. http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/keyboards/keyboard/devices/4740&cl=us,en

Yeah they are there, but they actually aren't back-lit, the alternate function media keys got orange backlights instead, which I would have proffered that they not put on there at all to be honest. Besides that though, it's got a slim profile in all dimensions, nice feel to the keys, and it's back-lit.
It's needlessly expensive though, mine was a gift. The risers on the bottom don't go up too high either, which some may not appreciate but it works well with my desks height. I really like the thing, not at all necessary though.
You can look up keyboards and mice on Newegg.com and get some pretty interesting user feedback in the User Reviews. People have a lot to say about almost every product on there, check it out.

I'm really not a fan of cordless mice/keyboards personally. I can see the appeal but I don't like the response (maybe it's psychological) or running on batteries from a practical and ecological viewpoint.

I would not recommend cordless input devices neighter.
I had a few wireless mices & keyboards too, but even with AA Mignon 4800mAh batteries itīs a pain in the ass - AA Micro batteries are even more worse because they support max. 1450mAh.
If you can avoid wireless stuff then i would do it.
Do you know why professionell call centers doesnīt use wireless telephones? All professional support hotlines use tethered phones with (good) reason.

The box may be dented, but everything else is new. I don't see anything else wrong with it besides the dented box and others who have ordered these before found nothing wrong with it either. It's better than paying $80 just for a keyboard...I'd buy your keyboard from here for $65 if you are buying that:

I've never owned wireless mice or keyboards. I just made that suggestion because they were first looking at an expensive wireless set.

The Razer keyboards are nice, but I don't see a reason why you should buy it. Figure out what you'll be using the keyboard for and if you absolutely need those features. Look at the keyboard you're currently using and ask yourself if at any time did you think you needed a certain feature.
Everyone has their own taste in keyboards. You should just go out there and try typing on a few of these. We can make suggestions, but it is your decision in the end. It's also easier and faster to find reviews on these keyboards.
