View Full Version : Renderman cloud shader
uphillcastle 02-03-2010, 08:25 PM I have been posting around for info on attaining this sort of effect making a cloud shader with renderman and having it have little lightning flashes...This is a picture from wall E when the space ship is landing....I really want to get that effect of lightning flashes going off inside the cloud density(if possible, that might be too hard idk)...Any ideas for a path to take? thanks

Check out the new volume rendering techniques in PRMAN 15 (its in the RPS manual, at home at the mo so dont have it in front of me).
It is a VERRY technical job though. I hacked something together based on their examples that worked, but if you want anything dynamic you might want to look into the implicit field maya fluid cache plugin.
My way was to make some blobby particles, and then manual change the first blobby opcode to 8, which makes them render as volumes. I then inserted the cloud shader from the RPS docs manual into the rib, because RMS has no support for volume fields (you can do this by doing a pre shape mel using RiSurface).
Good luck!

"Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit smoking," -- Thanks for that...I have something to work on now! Btw is there anywhere to download the new volume rendering tips from the RPS manual, or do you have to own pro server 15 to look at it?

It's only supported by Renderman pro server 15.0, so you'll need to own it to use it.

Is there anyway to kind of fake the effect by taking say, information from maya fluids and plugging it into particles so that renderman for maya can render them?
I dont have access to prman 15 only a lowly evaluation copy of renderman for maya...thanks

You might want to just do a fluids pass in maya software, it could make your life a lot simpler :) There's no out of the box support for fluids in RFM

But there is support maya fluids in prman 15 / studio 2? I have seen a deal for students for $199.99 for a year subscription ! which is a bit of a steal. $3k is way out of my league...

No, not realllyyy. There is an experimental implict field plugin that comes with RPS 15 that lets your read in maya fluid caches. But it doesnt translate any of the shading. To be honest, it looks bloody difficult :) You might want to look at 3Delights fluids support, that's looking pretty good these days.

Just one quick question...regards to doing what you said with a maya pass with fluids...you can combine passes with maya software and renderman for maya? I thought it was render with renderman for maya or nought. That sounds the simplest way to go...implicit fluid caches and what not sounds a bit too deep for me at the moment...because thinking about maya fluids I think you could get that lightning effect pretty easily...i'll check out 3delight n'all - thanks -

Just render them out with an alpha channel, and compiste them together after.
