"It lost Xbox 2 and the next Nintendo. But does the graphics company have an ace up its sleeve?"

"The reality is nVidia is not sitting in a vacuum," said Erach Desai, an analyst with American Technology Research. "They are in discussions with Sony for the PS3."

"Sony made the PS2's graphics engine in-house - but will it outsource the work for the PS3?
Because of its age, the PlayStation 2 is the weakest graphically of the three consoles on the market. The machine is a year older than the Xbox or GameCube – and Sony froze the design specs long before the machine hit store shelves. The machine's current graphics chip was designed by Sony and manufactured by Fujitsu.

"They realize, I think, that they cannot do it all," said Desai. "I have checked with a couple of very seasoned executives ... and the strong impression is that there is interest from Sony and interest from nVidia."

Hmm. "Lost the Xbox 2"..
That's an interesting stance considering that MS and nVidia went to court over cost arrangements that were squelching nVidias bottom line.

I did not see either party agreeably meeting on working out a GPU for XBOX2. At best it was a gentlemenly parting of ways.
The time and resources it took nVidia to develop their XBox version of the G4 seriously impacted the development of the FX series which cost nVidia their performance crown.
They may have made incremental profits and gained experiece in the dev process, but the cost in consumer mindshare was sure expensive. Had they simply developed the G4 they would not be in the possition they find themselves in now. Neck and neck with ATI.

ATI did make a much nicer contract with MS as a result of the previous litigation. They are not tied to the long term cost factors that nVidia is.
