View Full Version : Nvidia GF100 Info released, Nvidia still unable to count.
InfernalDarkness 02-02-2010, 10:39 PM From Gizmodo (http://gizmodo.com/5462540/nvidias-first-raging-fermi-graphics-cards-geforce-gtx-480-and-geforce-gtx-470), of all places:
The first Fermi graphics cards from Nvidia (http://gizmodo.com/5371436/nvidia-fermi-next+gen-graphics-architecture-has-512-cores-for-radioactively-melting-faces) will bear the names GeForce GTX 480 (http://gizmodo.com/tag/geforcegtx480/) and GeForce GTX 470 (http://gizmodo.com/tag/geforcegtx470/). All preliminary hearsay indicates they will be ornery beasts (http://gizmodo.com/5450970/nvidia-gf100-512+core-monster-graphics-card-previewed-goodbye-eyeballs). And cost as much as dragons. [Nvidia (http://twitter.com/NVIDIAGeForce)]
No news on a release date, but it's apparent that the marketing staff at Nvidia is still having a rough time counting. I know it's rough, but "3" comes after "2", and "300" comes after "200", Nvidia Staff. It's a good thing their other math skills are so amazing! 512 CUDA cores comes after 511 would have, as far as I know...

I found it quite odd that they headed straight to four after saying the cards would be in the 300 range.

I have a feeling they'll use rebadged 200s and call them 300s some time in the future. And those will be considered their mainstream line.

I guess theyll be using 400 for the higher end cards and are saving 300 for when the budget ones are ready.

Hu's on first.
I have not been following the development in the GPU space-race all too closely as of late.... so how good are these cards supposed to be??

The best so far, which is partly due to them being the newest technology and the result of millions of dollars in Research & Developement.
ATI's latest cards, which are already on the market, are also amazing. The GF100 is faster in some ways, though, and is a more forward-looking technology.
Intel's cards, which don't exist yet, are allegedly amazing too!

There is still not enough benchmarks to know, also anyone taht buys them should look at its power needs.
They were called 4xx series because for Laptops they have rebadged the 2xx series to 3xx.

That may be so, but it still doesn't account for hardware manufacturer's blatant inability to count. I find it difficult to put faith in companies that can't perform the basics.
But it's just a name. I just wish people at Nvidia knew what "GT" stood for in the first place, but the same could be said about almost any company. Just some "nameology" issues I guess.

i heared they had quite some problem with the manufacturing of the chips... are those problems solved yet? Also, as mentioned before, these cards are going to use HUGE amounts of energy... keep that in mind!

It is said they will be released in March.

based on this info from nvidia's twitter page i guess there will be no 300 card, just 400.
NVIDIA GF100 Cards = GeForce GTX 470 & GeForce GTX 480
Mon 2010-02-01 - Posted by Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan (http://forums.cgsociety.org/macmac@futuremark.com)
A little over two hours ago, NVIDIA (http://www.nvidia.com/page/home.html) revealed on their Twitter page (http://twitter.com/nvidiageforce) that the upcoming Fermi/GF100-based graphics cards will be known as the GeForce GTX 470 and GeForce GTX 480.
Here's the tidbit of info:
"Fun Fact of the Week: GeForce GTX 480 and GeForce GTX 470 will be the names of the first two GPUs shipped based on our new GF100 chip!"
Kiss all those GeForce GTX 380 discussions goodbye!

Indeed, that would be the entire point of my original post.

i guess they didn't miss the count. the 300 fermi cards are not that different from the 2xx cards
Is there a tribunal where you can bring up marketing teams for crimes against common sense? NVIDIA's epic rebranding exercise (http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/13/nvidia-outs-300m-mobile-graphics-series-causes-little-excitemen/) knows no bounds, as the company has now snuck out its very first desktop 300-series cards, but instead of the world-altering performance parts (http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/18/nvidia-fermi-gf100-architectural-details-revealed/) we've always associated with the jump into the 300s, we're getting what are essentially GT 2xx cards in new garb. The GT 340 sports the same 96 CUDA cores, 550MHz graphics and 1,340MHz processor clock speeds as the GT 240 -- its spec sheet is literally identical to the 240 variant with 1,700MHz memory clocks. To be fair to the company, these DirectX 10.1 parts are exclusively for OEMs, so (hopefully) nobody there will be confused into thinking a GT 320 is better than a GTX 295, but we'd still prefer a more lucid nomenclature... and Fermi graphics cards, we'd totally like some of those too.

The 300-series cards are not based on the Fermi, but recycled, rebadged previous GPU's.
The whole story. (http://www.pcpro.co.uk/blogs/2010/02/24/its-at-it-again-nvidia-rebrands-yet-more-gpus/)
They're all OEM cards only, for use in weaker pre-built systems. Note that the GT 330 is just a relabeled 8800GT.
The 400 series will use the new architecture, not the 300's.

I had a feeling this would happen and I was right. :argh:
