s0real 08-29-2003, 03:40 PM is there any way to make a raytraced glass material preview as transparent in a shaded viewport?
at the mooment my glass juast shows up as a black solid - but it shows transparent in the material preview slot???

yea man, mine does the same thing, i made myself almost sh*t in my pants, i made a wine glass, and i thought i finally made it look like actual clear class, but it was white, on a white back ground

i seen a tutorial about RAYTRACE Glass,that is very cool,and it spend a little time,but it could be made very well...:beer:

TARZAN, wtf are you talking about?? Did you even read the actual question??
Anyway. Which version of 3dsmax are you using? And with plugin or somethin?
Raytraced material shows transparent on max 4.2 (if its opacity is less than 100% of course). Never had similar problem.

i know you problem,and u should see the final result of the scene, a wrong view will be appeared to u in viewport.
then i'm using the 3DMAX 5.1 ,but i can make the same scene in MAX2.1 because i would't use the really "RAYTRACE"to make it,but the final result is very well.

You want to have a transparent representation of your glass in a preview? What about-
Selecting your object and going to the display command panel- find the display properties and check See-through.
Or
Right click your object, select properties, and find the see-through checkbox in the display properties on the bottom right.
Or
Goto Tools menu, select display floater, select object level tab and, you guessed it, find the see through checkbox.
Hope this is what you wanted, or I'm looking like a tool right now. :blush:
Or just pressing 'Alt + X' (X-Ray Mode)

got it now.
i had the transparency set to black so the glass appeard black in the viewport even though i'm using a transparency map.
what a silly boy i am.
