View Full Version : lighting footage
xsisx 08-29-2003, 02:12 PM can anyone tell me an apporach to extract shadows/ shading from a footage and light it somehow differently?
for example if you have a face/ head of a person and the light comes from the left. is it possible to adjust it so it looks more like it's coming from the right?
i guess it must be pretty difficult, if not impossible (?), since there is no 3d data (normals, etc.) involved.

It all depends on the content and what it's being cut around in the show.
The simplest way if possible is to just flip it on the horizontal axis.
Next simplest is a reshoot of the footage, but that never seems to go over too well with the production companies...
If that doesn't work, then sometimes a luma keyer can pull out the shadows, and then you need to color correct them brighter. Then luma key the highlights and color correct them darker.
The above may sound simple enough, but it will take a lot of fine tuning, masking to effect the correct areas, and the like, and will generally be a royal pain in the butt.

the flip-tip is funny. thanks jay
if you can get a decent matte working for the characters you can use a variety luma keys & masks to grade out the shadows & lighten the other side. depends on how this footage was shot begin with to determine how successfully you can change the lighting.
