Nice, very nice, you might want to post some rendered movies too... really amazing modeling, shading, might need some more detail in the texturing, animation is great, nice work, 5 stars for this one!

Superb animation, you got some really nice moves going.
(at least, I THINK, I'm not a martial arts specialist)
Probably the best animation I've ever seen without MoCap.
I'm with Derby-Q Salano on the shading part and rendered movies.
Anyway, keep up the good work!

That's the spirit! I really like martial arts, what sort is this? Thai boxing maybe? I don't think it's karate because of the position of the hands during the kick, might be kung-fu, though it would seem a Bruce Lee version then... although Bruce would keep his motions shorter instead of this open and circular... anyway, I'm interested in the animation, could you also post some more detailed shots of the character? Really like the modeling too!

Hello there,
that is very nice Kung FU action you have. That's a great model of Donnie (way too underused in Blade II). Can't really see from the animations but is his mouth morphing? I'd like to see more model shots if that's possible.
GOOD WORK!!!

You may want to over extend his kick in the air. It will help to bring out the dynamic of the animation a little bit more.
Just push the animtion a little bit more.

Heh I practice martial arts, first of all only one of the round house kicks is descent, no offense meant or anything bad, the other kicks are really bad :) Like one of the reverse kicks uhm, it looks like a fake I GUESS, if it's not a real one, and to make it feasible the guy has to bend the body more downwards (as in backwards) and so that the hook of sorts can be higher) BUT, it's fast its motion and people who don't practice martial arts and LIKE martial arts stuff will like this so its good in that way :)

I'm sorry for your criticism, the animtion were made all by myself, there are many many keyframes,if you can see avi I think it's motions would be more really, but now I can only put some gif pictiures, lost many details.
thank you all for your criticism and praise,I'll try to make the animation better!

Good stuff.
You could make a 3D version of Stick Fu (http://www.people.cornell.edu/pages/cce3/stickfigures/fight3.swf). :D
Mix it up with multiple opponents, add a boss at the end and you have a winner. People love watching a well executed beatdown.

Try doing this, I think this would be cool, a hook kick, a roundhouse kicks (no leg drop, you know what I mean? Same leg), then drop leg sure but at same time fake reverse kick then reverse kick. I dunno just some variation. For manual animation (no motion capture) that's really awesome what you got here though :D

It seemed very low o_O I thought one of them was first a fake since it didn't seem to extend, so like alright. Then another ok real but not as high since the body seems to be really straight when the rotation is happening imho, doesn't go backwards when executing the hook, seems low.
Oh and maybe we are looking at different ones, there is 2 red Xs. Only one gif. It's still good ESPECIALLY for manually doing it, not motion capture @_@;
Like let me try being more clear, the first kick I think is alright, a roundhouse kick to the face, then the second kick, the reversekick... the hook of that kick is low, I'd assume its then a fake, although he does go backwards with his body which is good, but the leg itself doesn't reach high it drops really low, like as if its not a completed hook, which makes me think it's a fake to entice the opponent... I think. Then what follows seems to be a low roundhouse or something (not quite clear since it's a blur the legs don't extend or cause of the blur extend too fast hehehe) then afterwards the reverse kick happens which is alright I would say could be slightly slightltly adjusted.

The little things like how his head ducks back in the opposite direction of when his body leans adds a lot of good needed detail to the gesture of the body.

WOW
I'm a fan of Donnie Yen. I really enjoyed Iron Monkey especially the scene in which Donnie is teaching a bo tao to Wong Fei Hong. You should try to reproduce this scene.
Donnie Yen is obbviously a Kung Fu master. On your animations he seems to be practicing some Tae kwon Do moves, or maybe north style chinese wushu (south style is more sticking to the ground, with low kicks).
You should also try to animate some Drunken Style  or Monkey Style moves those are so cooool.

Whatever martial art you practice gigatron, not every single one has the same basic rules, in fact, if he would bend more backwards, the risk of losing focus would be too great. And believe me when I tell you that bending backwards won't help a lot to make him kick higher, bending the other leg a little would do the trick though... In my style, which is kenshikan karate (the style which lays most at the roots of Okinawa and is know to be a variant of the style that's derived from Kung Fu), bending backwards is the stupidest thing to do, followed by turning your back and lowering your hands during a kick.
But, there are many styles and martial arts is not only an art, it's also a science, there are theories and rules, thought out by the masters. One of the best "scientists" was Bruce Lee, who developed the Jeet Kune Do, based on dozens of styles. My point is that the kick might be perfect from one style's opinion, and terrible for the other...
And it's a great show kick, the point of the artist was to create a cool animation, which worked out just fine, so it all works for the better...
In the end I'd like to say that it ain't that BAD as you put. This animation was completely keyframed, and is not bad at all... you should try it sometime.
What I see from the images looks good - and from what I read it sounds great --- but when I went to see for myself - well - it would appear the site is now down :hmm:

Well, first off I would like to say that I certaintly got the impression that the moves were Tae Kwon Do, not Kung fu, but does it really matter? Doesn't it boil down to what the character should be using? He may look like Donnie Yen, but that doesn't mean that the author intends every action to mimick him.
Also, fantastic, great work. A bit more work on the texturing and lightning, and I bet you'd have something that many average people would mistake as a real photo.
The animation is fluid, but lacking weight. You have to remember how important hips are. Hips are the foundation of ANY movement. At one point in the animation he jumps, but there is no preceeding movement to launch him, he just goes. His hips should come down (bending the knees) a bit, then his jump should be led by his hips (focus on the hips being in the right position and angle, and the rest should come easier).
Basically, just add more anticipation to the movement.
But once again, great job.

Great animation, although it seems to have started quite a lot of conversation of styles. There are 3 things where everyone thinks their system is right. They are as follows:
Religion
Operating systems
Martial art styles
And people critiquing it by saying "His stance was about 2.8 cm off to the left, and the angle of the kick was 5.6 degree's off from the center from the position of the imaginary opponents head. If he really threw a kick like this, the effect would be similer to a butterfly landing on someones shoulder." I personally think critiques like this are useless and just a way for people to show off that they take martial arts.
I personally liked the animation a lot. But i did see 2 red X's. What were they? Can someone host them if you ran out of bandwidth? No "style" critiques from me. :)

All Martial arts are different in some way dispite popular belief ;) I pratice White Crane Kung Fu and use some similiar moves here, they all have their naunces and you notice it from trying out different styles of karate and kung fu like I did. To make a long story short it's all dependant on the individual themselves, since they use the style as a foundation and tailor it to their own strengths and weaknesses.
Best thing to do here 1xin is actually create a dummy opponent where you can judge the hits and fakes correctly.

Really nice work. :) I knew it was Donnie Yen out of the corner of my eye when I was browsing the front page, it's an excellent likeness. Nice animations too, though for some reason the last kick on the bottom right animation seems a little odd to me, particularly the landing looks kinda stiff. But that's just nit picking, it looks great. :D

First off WOW. You have done an amazing job on these animations. Im sure you posted to get some critiques and not praises though ;) So I will point out the only thing that I might think looks odd. The second kick is no doubt a fake cause not only is it low, but there is no extension (which I think is cool that you put a fake in). The third kick extends too far to the right which would look cool if he is knocking something out of the hand of his opponent. The only reason I say it is too far right is cause the last kick seems to end back in the center, high at the head. Thats all I have to say on such an amazing peice. You can go ahead and add me as a new fan of your work. I cant wait to see alot more of your work......did you rotoscope?
Everyone - We are all artist ...off course we have all taken martial arts. Im not gonna list my style or credentials cause that's better said with pads on :) But no one should feel like they have a stronger voice than another just because they say they know martial arts.
My vote on the style he is doing.....Tae kwon do. Very traditional Tae kwon do kicks.

Amazing work! The likeness is super, yet stylized. If you would go all the way (detailed texturemaps) the model would kick ass! If kicks lot's of ass as it is now, but will even more with some refined textures... and a guy getting beaten up!
The moves are spot on, maybe some "tension" in the waist could be added when kicking as the leg begins to pull back as Donnie straightens up.
I like the way the kicks in the right animation is displaced a little as he does them, I'm guessing he reaims after each kick as the opponent reels back from the kicks?
Now... when are we going to see that really hot Gung Fu fist-style Donnie Yen action?! :D
That would soo ROCK!! He's really the best in "Iron Monkey", "Once upon a time in China 2" and "Fist of legend". :buttrock:
Again; superb! More Gung Fu on CGTalk!! More, More!!

I used to practice TaeKwonDo :p My master was world champion lol, he is 40 years old now but hey! I still admire him, cause he is still really amazing! He was also wushu world champion, but wushu is mostly gymnastics rather then fighting style in my opinion.. well.. it just is heh. Although he did also practice kung fu too. The wonder of training since you are young lol..
When I see someone doing taekwondo moves I try to make them do it like he would anyways. I think you misunderstood me with what I meant by backwards, you don't actually go backwards it's when you do a 360 degree turn your body sort of sways downwards and it has to be very fast otherwise you can be easily kicked in the other leg and poop useless, stuff like that.. it has to do with speed, angle and balance.. otherwise its a useless kick.
But yes, high kicks are usually not effective if they are just blocked and boom! He was so damn fast though I don't want to exagerate you have to see to believe. I always make jokes that he is jet li.
When I moved recently, I obviously wanted to train martial arts again, but I changed style... I wanted to try something new (because first of all out of 20 different schools... only one was descent, everything was a buncha commercialized junk), I didn't like just doing kicks as a fighting style either. I only blocked with hands, actually some stuff I even blocked with legs (just my own build up... as you could say). So I started Hung Gar, but I am a total newb at that! I love it so far though.
What I meant with the kick is that the first roundhouse to the face is cool looking, the second kick honestly, what is he hitting, it seems like a reverse and then he seems to sort of hook on an angle somewhere yet the level is somewhere below chest or something. That's why I said, is it a fake to entice the opponent. It's just what I see Doesn't seem effective.
There are of course styles like you say for fighting and then for demonstration, and I don't like generalizing southern or northern styles as distinctly seperate from each other, both have its goodies. But hey, lets not argue lol, you are right about different styles, but that kick is just awkwards, it looks like one of the kicks you can block with a sort of grab on the side and then kick the other leg and drop the guy or hold the leg and stand behind the other leg and push.
But out of all said I wish to say that... it's VERY funny that we argue over a little animation, it's that good that it's almost a virtual martial arts discussion over someone's move! But none the less 1xn, you did one fine job, in each post I say it and I'll say it again, manually animating that is really awesome :)
Sorry for long thread, I just get excited over martial arts

blah blah and more blah... people here don't play king of fighters... that's fight!!
This seems to be taekwondo, no more words. It could be better, obviusly, but the work, is excellent for to be 3d. A super kick of taekwondo is more than is represented here... more powerful and awesome (i put my leg paralel to my body, super elasticy)(a mov. seems to be kicking boxes and crates :P). My rig is P3 866kHz,256M RAM,program is 3ds max4.2,:D
Donnie had mastering various martial arts styles, include ITF taekwondo, boxing, and chinese kongfu. So his style isn't pure some wushu style,so I think you discussed about his matial art style was meaningless.I like his fast action, and powerful punch.

Yeah come on 1xin! I'm tired of looking at those two gifs when you have a model that looks that good and the skill to animate it.
Where's a fight scene movie !?...:banghead:
:annoyed: And it's true that all this talk about everybody's own experience in martial arts is rather pointless in this thread.
I'm sure there's a MAtalk forum somewhere on the web.
1Xin!! show us something new!

For all the talk of, "I practice this." or "I practice that." Does anyone here practice watching Donnie Yen movies? Granted I know he is on screen for three minutes and dies in the American stuff, but he has a host of films from Hong Kong and China too.
The animation 1xin did is spot on, even to Yen's weird speed variations used in his Asian films.

I agree, although I love his fist-fighting more than the kicks in the movies he's in. Speedup or no, he's so f*cking fast! Even if it's a trick with that special dust-stuff they use. For those who is interested, look at "Iron Monkey" and "Once upon a time in China 2" (going against Jet Li) where he really kicks ass! =)
And I can imagine the work 1xin put in the animations... and the sheer amount of keyframes needed for a entire fighting-scene as seen in those Hong Kong-movies! =)

My opinion.
The image is really good.
Expression on the the face is top,and atmosphere matchs.
For the first gif ,I would say that it's too fast.
The second kick is in a first time surprisingly low.
But it's really ok ! specially for non mo-cap animation.
For the second gif , good but can be improved.
First kick ok but second, really higher , doesn't seem to be enough really difficult for him.Hips don't move enough, regarding the power necessary to execute this. (but rotation of the foot is good !)
Just before that second kick you can look at his left (I think) hand.
It's staying at the exact same position for a too long time , giving the impression that he's holding something to help him in the move.(a bar like in trains)
The third kick is good ,except that ,for his jump to be believable, you have to add a flexion ,then extension of the leg that allows him to raise in the air,and the body move that matchs.
How it looks now, gives the impression that he's jumping from nothing.
My crit's may seem hard , but it's what I feel seeing your work.
Again for non mo-cap animation ,it's already REALLY good... start !
;)
Keep going !
PS : compared to you at animation, I am a sh.. !

this is incredible. Your work seems to be very simple and at the same time it's stunning. The expressions are really good as well, you're one of those artists whose work seems easily done and yet so damn efficient!

Great work! I think that in the second one, he pushes away too much with the first kick to perform an effective second kick. I think he wouldn't have much kick in the second one, since he is hanging still... maybe if you'd have him do some more translation between the kicks, more approaching the enemy?
And the first I just don't get... he's kicking twice with the same foot? hmm... I don't know... maybe if you'd put one between the kicks... just a suggestion... although I think you're not going to modify these...
Anyway, GREAT work! I love the attention to the animation detail, such as the movement of the arms and such, really good! Keep it up... And render that feature movie!

Felt I had to post on this as I'm a giant Donnie Yen fan and have been doing martial arts for years now myself. I haven't read all the posts on this thread as it goes on for 8 pages and despite being an animator, I do have other things to do apart from sit infront of a screen all day *snerk*
The model is great, you can tell instantly who it is, even from the pose of the still image (man I watch WAY too many Hong Kong films!). The movement is excellent, there's something about his two turning kicks (round-house - whatever you want to call it) that don't look quiet right, I think it might be because his body doesn't lean back much when making the second (higher) one. But then I think Donnie has the flexability to be able to kick that high without having to lean back to reach it. It might actually just be that the retraction on the second kick looks a little too fast, but I really wouldn't worry about it to be hoenst, that's just being extremely critical. :)
The jump spin-sidekick is pure Donnie, I've noticed that he drops his knee after the kick as he comes down. Not sure myself why he does this, but if you look at a film like In The Line of Duty (UK title on Hong Kong Legends) he does one in slow motion and you can really notice that. The fact that you put that in show that you've really looked closely, and as a HK film geek I really like that!
Also in the one where he jumps up on the guy and sidekicks off, maybe you could stick another kick with the left foot in there. I think he does a tripple in Blade 2, I guess I'll have to go and watch that again to check! Anyway, great work, keep it up!

Yep! You are exactly right. He does a triple in BLADE II. I think in the animation above it IS kind foin there, but it's not accented enough. The middle kick needs to linger a bit.
So far this Donnie Yen stuff is very good though. I personally don't like Yen's speed variations, but 1xin captured them well in his tests.
I just watched Yen's "Twins Effect" film and I still have a love/hate relationship with his choreography. This film had some of the best I've seen though. Real ingenuity. Not your usual *wuchit *buchit* fight choreography.

Actually if you watch the little clip of Donnie in action that 1xin
linked on the last page (Page 7) the very last clip has him kicking a foe twice in the air with the same foot, so you can see where it comes from. Everybody was kung fu fighting..... Also as far as I know Donnie Yen has studied Taekwondo (just for those saying it didn't look kung fu enough earlier! ) :)

Is it just me or is the background from the first clip (the double kick) the vampire relic from Blade? And the background from the second clip, the HOT DOGS secret base from WONDERFUL DAYS?
