1)The Geforce 4 Ti 4600 with 128 mb

OR

2)The Geforce FX 5200 Ultra with 128 mb

Or

3)The Geforce FX 5600 Ultra with 128 mb

OR

please when answering this question, state the reasons, and please not just instincts.

please also arrange the items in order....... ex,

1)Geforce 4 Ti 4600
2)Geforce FX 5600
3)Geforce FX 5200
4)Geforce 4 Ti 4200

i will mostly use my card in dealing with softimage and 3dmax R5 and maybe play some games.

First of all yu probbably should not rush this, but this is the way I would go.

1 - ti 4600
2 - fx 5600 ultra
3 - ti 4200
4 - if I had to fx 5200 ultra.

I have heard good things about both the 5600 ultra and the 4600, both from friends and online users. The 5600 supports dx9 if that is of interest to you (games.) I own a 4200 and it is an excellent low budget card, no probs with it. And the fx 5200 ultra imo does not deserve the fx name on it. It is a fancy mx card with dx9. So do not go for the 5200.

Could you clarify this?

The Ti 4600 and 5600 Ultra would be close in performance. If your leaning more towards games then Cg apps...then I'd go with the 5600 Ultra.

Should also look into a Quadro 500 FX (CgFx's favorite recommendation), as its only a few hundred more, and has features you won't find in the normal geforce line when dealing with cg applications.

It's a matter of what you'll be using the computer for...
Though I do not own a Quadro myself, it may be worth considering buying one of theese instead...

I wouldn't say it is my favorite recommendation.

Everyone says that Quadro is too expensive so I like to point out that there are Quadro boards that are cheaper than GeForce boards and are faster than the fastest GeForce cards for professional applications.

I just checked out Nvidia's page on their FX boards:

Quadro FX 1000 Memory Size $800
Memory Interface 128-bit
Graphics Memory Bandwidth 9.6GB/sec.
proe-02 - 33.9
ugs-03 - 33.2
3dsmax-02 128MB - 23.3

Quadro FX 500 Memory Size $300
Memory Interface 128-bit
Graphics Memory Bandwidth 7.8GB/sec.
proe-02 - 16.7
ugs-03 - 12.1
3dsmax-02 128MB - 12.0

These numbers were tested on SPECviewperf. Does that mean that in Max, the 1000 is going to perform twice as fast? I know numbers don't mean everything, but it's twice as fast! Also, how much difference does the mem bandwidth make?

Sorry CgFx,

I should have said "common" or frequent.

Mainly due to the limited budgets of most computer purchases.

I wonder what people did back in 1997 when a PII450 cost a little over 700 USD.

Here's a review for you babyhopper.

Thanks ALot you guys,

I think i've made up my mind, i'll buy the Ti 4600, it's affordable for me and i can't seem to find the Geforce FX 5600 here anywhere, only the 5200....... which sux apparently

I wish there was a Geforce 4 TI 4600 with Directx9 support, that would be gre8, anyways...... i don't think it will make such a difference for me coz i don't play games, except for online ones which might be a dissapiontment for me when running games like Rainbow Six: Raven Shield.

expect my work on this website soon, i need to learn everything you know first :hmm:

The ti4600 runs games and 3ds max very well; the one that I have has worked great for over a year now.
