i'm looking for a handheld device that can capture true-to-life audio for use in a movie as background fx. i'd like to be able to drop it right into my computer via a usa or something of that nature.

any ideas? what do you use?

thanks!

There are a few problems with your question, most important of all being budget. It can go from a few hundred bucks to well over $15k, depending on exactly how true-to-life you want to be.

Secondly, you have to be aware that the handheld recording device is only one part of the equation, and perhaps not even the most important one. The other one is the type of microphone you want to use, and here there are lots of options, depending again on the budget, the SPL (sound pressure level) your sounds have, the distance from where you want to record, the degree of control you have over the background noise and so on.

One thing you can forget right away is a device with a internal microphone. The only thing they are good at is recording understandable voice, nothing more.

So, perhaps if you come back with a little more details about your means and purposes, we could give you a solution. I for one use a Zaxcom Deva II together with an array of Neumann, Sennheiser and Audiotehnica microphones, but I get the feeling thatīs slightly over your budget... ;)

Cheers,
Andrei
