Chico 05-20-2002, 09:50 PM IM in.
I think Ill use this as an excuse to get stuck into Lightwave.
I usually do everything in Max...But since this isnt for production I think Ill do a bit of Experimenting.
Ill be modeling in a new beta Sub-Div modeler...and texuring/lighting/rendeing in Lightwave...
6 weeks so I have plenty of time to play.
Oh and Ill be doing a forest...enchanted I think..:p
Good Luck all, This is gonna be fun, theres heaps of time and already some of the big boys have joined so the level will be high:thumbsup:

Morning all,
Heres a little update. My 2d skills are pretty bad but I think its important to rough out concepts before I begin my models...2d is somthing I really want to work on over the next few years.
Anyway this is a sketch I did last night, and I coloured it up a bit in PShop today...Its helped me solidify my ideas, and spot problems/conderciderations early.
Im about to start modeling the trees now, may not get anything up for a day or two though:p
http://www.oneglasseye.co.nz/uploads/JuneWIP/JuneWIP_02.jpg
And for thouse of you who want to see more detail...I real one is about 4k*2k...I wont post that.:p

@-->hypronost, thanks for that. But Oggie is about a year and a half old...this is new...at this rate...6 weeks....Ill need 6 months at least:bounce:
I look foward to seeing you intergrate the mech of yours into the forest:thumbsup:

Nice looking tree there, just the sort bonsai types would love. I do prefer the bent gnarly types.
I wonder what the best way to texture such a thing is though, could be a problem.
Woooah 160 slides :surprised ....how many overdue books is that Chico?
Nice looking tree there too :)

Looking cool Chico
Ummm one question though - I can see your mesh cages there, but why does the actual model already appear to have such a high poly count??? Is that just a sub-d preview kinda thing, or have you already subdivided it that much??
Chico
05-22-2002, 09:58 PM
Thanks guys.!
@-->Clanger...Texturing...no probs, I think a tree is acually really easy. DIvide it up into its basic cyliders, the say for the trunk, maybe divide up the trunk into its main slabs of Bark and Roots.
Then go oevr and cover up the seams with extra UV channels and their required maps. At the end of the day, this is only going to be a still so I can get awaywith alot too:p
(:deal: Remind me of this ina few weeks when Im in tears :p)
My wife and I have just started to get in to Bonsai trees, so we have lots of material on the too. I think that they will look great as models in such a forest as the have an enchanted look to them anyway. (Plus...you dont have to do big bushy trees, you dont need more than a thousand odd leaves:thumbsup: )
@-->Kiwi...I cant work out wether they love me there or hate me..? I have no excuse as I walk home past the lib every day:shrug:
@-->Leigh...The reason it looks like its subdivided is the software Im using is a standalone Sub-Div Modeler. Its geared up so that you can work on the cage, while seeing the geometry divided up (to whatever level you want, if you want), at an incredible speed.
Its still in alpha and there is a limited testing team so far, but there is a place to sign up for when the beta is relesed. Ill post the link in a couple of days:thumbsup:

The geom look similar to what you see in Maya4 when you start with a Sub-D (rather than converting).
Chico: great stuff so far. One question, is your focus going to be the two trees and the characters hiding behind them or the water and the characters interacting (fishing maybe) with it.
Just curious so I know what to focus on as I drool all over my keyboard looking at your work.
Chico

Zro-1, youre right .! It does look like Maya...yuckk....I feel Dirty...(Not a maya fan:p) Never played with Mayas sub-div, havent really uesd maya since 1.0.
My focus will be on the trees and the enviroment. I havent thought of how Im going to do the charaters yet. One will be some breed of goblin, the other....not sure yet. I think in 6 weeks I should be able to do most of this, but I will be focusing on the look and feel of the enviroment first.
Okay heres a quick update...havent done much this afternoon...Just playing around.

Very nice curves, Chico. I really can't wait to see what wonderful scheme you are going to come up with for the textures. Already it is looking alive and organic. Nice, nice.

ONe more...Im pretty much calling this done now...well the first tree anyway. The top braches still need a nit more added as far as depth...but it doesnt really matteras they are designed on to be seen from the front.
Ill leave this for a few days I think.
Any crits please fire them at me.

Now off to figure out how to texture this damn thing..
lucascerro

Ok... I think that's the best tree modeling I've seen up to now, but there are a few details... The trunk looks fantastic, but I think that the branches aren't quite right. You see, the tree only has 3 main branches..., and they're all straight... I think they should bend more, and subdivide (deja vu) into secondary branches... I mean... you only have this main branches and some little twigs... The change in size is too hard... you dont have some middle sized branches. I dont know your intentions, but I think the branches are waaay too long, and too straight... Like... after the branch subdivides, I think that the main branch should end and one of the subdivisions take over... ¬¬ I dont know if you're understanding me... And the branches should all point outwards from the tree... some of yours are pointing back at the tree... One last thing... The branches are only growing on top of the main branch... (or only growing *up*) they should grow down too, but always away from the tree... I did a fantstic drawing to try and show you what I mean... heheheh the image on the left is your tree and on the right are my suggestions... heheheh

hehehe... sorry, I made a mistake on the interpretation of your tree... its more like this: (see attatch) (the difference is what I meant by the branches only growing upwards)
-Lucas
Yeah, but it's an enchanted forest so maybe his tree is magical and in his forest they grow that way? I think it looks pretty cool even though I know trees don't grow that way. Well ... maybe they could with some carefull attention by a tree farmer (forget what they're called ... horticulturist?).
Remember ... this is supposed to be fantasy. His tree could be sprouting bunnies from it's branches and that should be ok.
lucascerro
05-25-2002, 06:27 AM
Yeah... I thought about that... :) That's why I said that I didn't know his intentions... And those were just suggestions... I didn't mean to be misunderstood... But I *still* think he has the best tree modeling of the challenge so far...
- Lucas
I think you'll find that chico's tree is fashioned after bonsai trees, which are trained (or tortured if you're the tree) to grow in asthetically pleasing ways. Therefore Chico's tree could well be legitimate.
Bloody big bonsai!

Kickass tree. Dig the gnarliness(is that a word?).
That modeler looks pretty interesting. I really like LW's wireframe shade mode for that reason..wanna check it out when I get time..
The bonsai comment is totally right, and especially the part about aesthetics, it's a fantasy environment, and an art piece, so why can't it grow however it needs to in order to look cool?
Look forward to the rest of it..

Tortured is such an extreme word!!!
Remember Conan who was chained to that big wheel when he was a kid and by the time he was twenty he was so buff that he could kick anyones ass...
Well that's bonsai, it's really all environmental. :-)

Lucascerro : the interpretation of real trees are like you draw it, but i think Chico want to model a bonsai or something near the bonsai cuttings.
Bonsais are like Chico modeled it. I mean it's an art to cut some branchs to give the aspect Chico gave to his tree. Sure we'll rarely find this kind of tree with branch growing up in nature, but that's the art of bonsai to cut the lower branchs to give a clean cut of the final tree. And that's exactly what Chico did :)
I think that's an excellent model of bonsai :)
Looking really nice Chico

Morning all,
I havent done much on this lately but heres alittle update anyway. Ive poped some trees in the BG...I think Ill start working on the other feature tree soon. But I have a bit of commercial work to do first. Could be a few days yet.
Okay and to settle this wee debate on my tree modeling...Yes I am tring to follow the rules of Bonsai. lucascerro Thanks for you compliments on the modeling, and I really appreciate the crits you provided, but as most have mentioned, its by deign.:bounce:
As Kirt mentioned I feel that Bonsais have a reall enchantment to them, which is why They have been plonked into my forest. The ability to scuplt all sorts of emothions (maybe torcure ) Is amazing. Ive got heaps of reference here and some of these trees are just amazing.
The rest of you guys thanks, and DiamondBC, I love the conan story...really neat apprach:thumbsup:
Now onto textureing...humm...maybe later:p
heres a screenshot of it soo far anyway. I have pulled out of the Lightwave idea, as I have a feeling Im going to have to fight for Layout (Aye LorD)
http://www.oneglasseye.co.nz/uploads/JuneWIP/JuneWIP_10.jpg
I have offered to become a vampire and work at night so that you can use layout through the day....
Oh well,

Well I may be getting a computer to use at home in the near future so I should be able to put some more work into future challenges.:drumrock:
Good luck to you all and I will at least throw on some leaves onto my tree and texture it up before th end of the challenge.
