When you have a high polygon model in max and max starts lagging a little, is this due to the cpu cant keep up or the graphics card cant?

In other words what makes max better a faster processor or a better graphics card?

graphics.

for viewport display, it really doesnt matter (for the most part) whether you are on a 1ghz or 3ghz processor.

If he's running software heidi instead of direct3d or opengl, then all of the viewport speed directly relates to the speed of the CPU. (Software heidi doesn't make use of gpu's on video accelerators).

I also wouldn't discount a 1 ghz vs 3 ghz cpu as not having any effect on the viewports.

The latest (even a generation back) video accelerators are FAR faster then the cpu's in the systems their put in. This means that the video card is actually waiting for the cpu to catch up...which tends to showcase itself in a gradually increasing performance curve.

As cpu power increases, so does video card performance.

In the case of some cards, these increases can be quite substaintal.

Here is an article for reference.

Could you give us a bit more information about your system so we can help you troubleshoot a bit more? (See the sticky in this forum for the info we need)

It isnt a problem max runs ok at the moment so im not troubleshooting, i was just wondering for when i do upgrade.

I am running
1.8 p4
GeForce 3 Ti200
768 RAM
120Gig HD

I also have max set to use open g, Should i be using opengl for the spec i have got?l

Aye...opengl is generally faster then direct3d...except in wireframe.

One of the easiest max performance solutions to large models is...

1) Use the display floater (Hide/freeze)
2) Collapse your stacks (when the modeling's finished)
3) Use optimize.
4) Seperate large models into seperate max files...then merge at a later time.

Alot of viewport issues can be solved by better optimizing/refining your models and workflow...much more so then faster hardware can help.

Its also free and doesn't become obsolete.
