View Full Version : Enchanted Forest - Environment/Character - Clanger
Clanger 05-20-2002, 09:18 PM High, all
I'm now officially out of lurk mode.
I've been following the competitions for 2 months now and I'm so impressed with the quality of work that the thought of joining in is a little scary.
I wasn't going to enter a contest just yet but I couldn't let this one pass, I just love the subject and I've had enchanted forest on the to-do list for a long time now.
I only read the spec 30 mins ago so no post yet. My first thoughts on an entry are: Wizard type coming out of his tree home at night with all sorts of semi hidden creatures lurking, maybe a glowing fairy somewhere.

Welcome, and I look foward to what you have to offer..:wavey:

Chico,
Thanks for the welcome, makes you feel like your home.
I've just re-read the comp rules, 'no humans' I was thinking of a Gandalf type Wizard, is that too human or would he just squeeze into magical creature category?
Chico

I think Gandalf would fit into this catagory just fine.
Though it would be nice to see something that was a bit different from LOTR...Mind you I live in NZ and have the stuff coming out of my ears:D
I was a bit dissapointed to see "No Humans" as I wanted a little Boy to feature in mine =(
Nevermind
Good Luck aye:thumbsup:

Well, in my mind he'll be a tall old guy with a beard (typical Wizard) but I won't look at any Gandalf pics for reference and no blue wide brimmed pointy hat, as much as I loved LOTR I don't want to copy it.
Clanger
05-22-2002, 04:58 PM
Well his hat has ended up wide brimmed and pointy, but I hope he doesn't look like Gandalf.
I think I've spent enough time doodling I keen to dive into polygons.
Main worries are: Wizard clothes and texturing the trees.

Hey, I thing the idea is fantastic, with the wizard :scream: :applause: , I hope you do well modeling it.

05-23-2002, 01:46 PM
Yeah that is a great start  Looking forward to seeing some modelling! Come on! Give us an update :bounce: :bounce:
And don't worry too much about texturing the trees, I think we are all gonna be knocking our heads together to try and solve the UV nightmare of trees :surprised

I've been Leighed, woo hoo!
I'm now undecided about the time of year, I've sketched winter uninviting, but now I'm drawn to summery pretty.
At least I won't have to decide just yet, plenty to do first.
I've a tough deadline for 12:00 tomorrow, so head down untill then, and I'm away for the weekend so no chance for any real progress. Bummer I'm really fired up for this one.

hahah cool, your scene is more classical than mine :D
you'll put faeries? :bounce:
Clanger
05-24-2002, 05:53 PM
I've found a small window for modelling so I thought I'd post a little update.
Russo: I hope to finish the main scene with time to spare, if I do I'll keep going added more and more details, which might well include fairys (fairies, faeries?)

No access to a computer this weekend so no real progress but I did go with my camera and shot lot's of wood/tree ref pics.
So I've zipped them up (52 high res pics) and posted them on my web site. Anyone want them can download them here:
Forest Ref (http://www.raymation.co.uk/ForestRef.ZIP)
Warning 36Megs worth!
I'll leave them there for the duration of this Comp.

That's very kind of you, Clanger :)
Damn my slow third world servers!! I won't be able to download them!! But I'm sure eveyone else really appreciates this kind of generosity
Your tree model is coming along really well. Now get down to some more modelling!! *cracks whip* Let's see some updates!!

Nice ref pics! A bit slow even on this side of the pond, but they came through nicely..great stuff, very useful, thanks heaps.
I've been getting some various pics here and there of trees, but it's hard to come by a more proper forest without heading to the hills here in LA..though maybe the pollution makes 'em grow different :D Maybe a thread could be started for posting tree reference or something..
Treehouse is coming along well, dig the face and concept..faeries(ai,ea,ay) seem to be in abundance but wizards are scarce..look forward to more

I didn't think too much about poor souls with slow connections so I've made a new zip with the pics reduced to 800x600 and with high compression settings, still 7megs though but a lot better.
Low Res Version (http://www.raymation.co.uk/ForestRefLR.zip)
Yeah!VERY VERY GOOD!i like it!:bounce: Kmon!give us more!

Yeah that's coming along well
The only thing that really bugs me is that the other trees don't have any visible roots. You really should add some ;)

I'm very keen to start texturing, I usualy texture as I go but I've read from many sources that it's a good idea to finish most of the scene first, get the lighting sorted out then texture. So I thought I'd give that method a try.

Clanger

Yes, I plan lots more trees in the background. I'm hoping to get away with cardboard cutouts for the far distance. My computer's not very powerful so I've got to be careful with the polys.

Your dead right, far too light, my background is nearly black but the Volumn light has seriously lightened it up. Hope to fix it on the next full render.

Looking very cool..I'd take a step back towards the one without the moon though..it's a neat effect but the other one had a really great spooky flavor to it. Maybe somewhere inbetween. :)
Look forward to the finish on this one..
P.S. what's with invading threads to beg for warez? what a maroon.

If you ask for a 5 million program you wont get it but if I ask for the sample of a 5.000 u.s dollars one I may get it plus I am not asking for what you are acostum to pirate software. plus I ask Alias for a sample of the program and he said or yes I dont have any copy at the moment but when we get you will be Email to.
It's just that I cannot wait no more,I really wanna see the program:drool:

I've been busy trying to uv map the main tree, I think this is as far as I can go for now, I'll paint the texture and see how it looks next.
Clanger
06-18-2002, 02:35 PM
Face tree with prelimanary texture added, I'll se how it looks in the main lighting pic. Over night render though.

Couldn't wait for an overnight render, my computer should be doing something else but this is more fun!

Looking pretty good. I like the texture around the face, but it still needs a little work off to the sides of the tree, and in a couple branches. Good stuff so far
diazgl
06-18-2002, 05:30 PM
nice, all i feel i should say is that the texture of the tree seems to be a low-res UV map (you already said its UV), but it looks blurry and all, makes me think someone used a low-res image.
Clanger
06-18-2002, 05:45 PM
ZrO-1: I see it fixing the sides now, seems to be caused by texture scrunching (or what ever the opposite to texture stretching is called)
Diazgl: I think the blur is down too seriously compressed JPG, it's not there before I have to get the file size below 50k

any chance to post an image on an outside server?

06-18-2002, 09:03 PM
looking good...I think it needs more depth...looks like the world just ends after that last row of trees...or maybe it just drops down a huge hill:D maybe add more ground going back into darkness or something to soften the horizon so you don't know where it ends...
Clanger
06-19-2002, 09:05 AM
Diazgl:
I will be linking to a higher quality version later, when all the trees and ground plane are textured.
Bezerker75:
I do plan on adding more tree planes going off into the distance, I don't like the world ending so soon either.

Update,
Ground texture needs lots of work, just plonked there at the moment.

06-21-2002, 08:49 AM
ok. Nice man, but the noise was a nice touch for the background. Soft, very small noise, always gives a nicer feel to it!
ZrO-1
06-21-2002, 04:15 PM
OK, here's a couple crits on the lighting:
1) Tone way down the green in the green light. At night you see almost no color and that green light is extreemly saturated. If you really want some green light in your scene then make it super super light barely even there.
2) Put some decay on the yellow light coming out of the window in the tree. It's shining on way too much stuff outside just to be coming out that little window.
At night the primary light comes from the moon. If you have your moon almost in the center of your image then everything in the image is going to be silhoetted by that light.
Just a few tips. It's looking better each time, but that lighting needs work.
Clanger
06-21-2002, 05:15 PM
diazgl:
Not sure where that noise has gone, I've change something but not sure what, the noise in the volumn light is still on!
ZrO-1:
Thanks for the comments.
I'll try and tone down the yellow light, it does have decay on it but I admit it starts very bright.
The green light is from the Wizards staff, (what Wizard?) Next major task creating the wizard (how much time have you left!) No problem who likes sleep anyway.
There's three little lights in front of the face tree waiting for lanterns.

I'd definately tone down the volumetrics on that moon of yours. It's a bit bright. Maybe try adding some clouds, a little ground fog to add drama and make it more visually pleasing, without having to do a ton more work, since you're running out of time. Some whispy fog on the ground will reduce the amount of work left to do on the ground, still throw in some rocks, grass paches, twigs, ect.; but it could give it more of that enchanted feel and leave you with more time to concentrate on your wizard. Very nice work though so far. Hope you make the deadline, it's looking good!
Rhid1en
06-21-2002, 06:31 PM
Oh, one more thing... I'm assuming the cylinder is the character's scale? Is the tree, his house? If so, it's looking like a pretty small house for a character of that size. Might want to scale it way up, or rework the composition, zooming in on the tree to have him big enough to see detail, yet be able to not only fit in the house, but actually live in it.
Clanger
06-21-2002, 06:46 PM
Rhid1en:
Some good points there, I'll take them on board. From the start I intended ground fog but thanks for reminding me I'd completely forgotten about it.
It's not the Wizards house, there will be a simple goblin type head in there.

Hi I got poser3 and damn I am sick of it you cannot modify , or do practically anything I am still waiting for maya but I am not sure what Maya is alll about so tell me if it is every one is talking about :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
ZrO-1
06-22-2002, 08:18 PM
Maya is all that and a bag of chips. Other apps might do certian things a bit easier than Maya, but there is nothing that can't be done in Maya. Plus you don't need to go out and buy 30 different plug-ins to get all the features (unlike certian apps ;) ).
Looking cool so far! One thing. Your texturing of the foreground trees seem to have specular highlights, as if the bark is shiny. You might want to try a test render with only diffuse turned on and compare. Keep it up! :) :buttrock:
