Hi all,

I've recently bought a wacom intuos 4 medium and would like to know what (if anything) you do to protect the pad.

I have read that some apply a plastic film to the pad to protect it and that it can help keep the nibs from wearing out too quickly. The info I have for this is 2-3 years old though so I don't know if this is the done thing with an Intuos 4, I don't want to damage it. The types of film/plastic I have read about are normal acetate, frisket film or Mylar drafting film.

Thanks for any help!

You wont damage it if you don’t keep anything around it that can damage it.

Items to to keep away from your Wacom tablet could include engine parts, power cutting tools, barbed wire, caustic chemicals, fire, etc. :)

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Wacoms are virtually indestructible. I have not yet managed to damage one.

cheers,
Matthias

So I should move my other projects to the garage then? Reminds me, think the wife's been asking me to do something, can't recall what it was though.

Ah ok, I presumed the pad would be pretty sensitive.. will be putting it's indestructibility to the test later!

I have a Intuos 1 tablet that I've been using since Windows 98 and it still works great. I abused it alot but it still kicks ass. So don't worry about Intuos 4 so much...

In fact, I've been sort of thinking of getting the Intuos 4 tablet. I never test drove Intuos 2, 3 or 4 so I don't really know if there will be a huge difference in feel. (Yeah...I know....I'm ignorant).

Wrap it in a condom, ribbed give a better textured feel.

The Intuos4 features a completely different pad than the Intuos3. The I3 featured a slick surface in which nubs would only have to be replace every few years, even after heavy use.

The I4 features a pad that simulates paper. Unfortunately, heavy use can cause the nibs to wear out after a matter of days. At $1/nib, this can become quite costly.

I talked to Wacom support today and they confirmed that they have no plans to re-introduce the I3 surface for the I4. They claim that I4 users whom wear out their nibs prematurely don't have their pen's sensitivity calibrated.

Due to Wacom's unwillingness to release the I3 surface for the I4, some users have resorted to scotch taping a sheet of acrylic to the surface of their pads in order to protect the pad and their nibs.

Note that while the pads can be replaced for $20 - 30, it is important to replace your nib as soon as it creates an edge. Failure to do so could result in the scratching of your pad, leaving undesirable depressions and raises in the surface.

be gentle, big man.

just replace the plastic sheet when you've killed it. They will get scraped no matter what you do. I just got on eBay for my 6x11 Intuos3 for $16.

Wacom sells replacement surfaces, some have a slightly different feel, but they're fairly robust...if they're the same as the Intuos3 you can even flip them over and use the back, they're the same both sides.

Be careful of using it as a mouse pad, I made that mistake and some little bits of grit got stuck under the mouse and scratched the surface...obviously why the Wacom ones have felt bottoms.

They don't have replacement surfaces for the I4 yet. It's basically just mylar anyway. You're going to want to break it in, too, so don't worry about it.

Get a replacement when it is available, it will prob be under 20 bucks.
My intuos 3 9x11 needs love, so I am buying a replacement pad.

I did have an issue with a double clicking of the left mouse button.

My solution was to open the mouse and un solder, the right side button switch out. Thats it. The circuit has enough juice for the wheel and other 3 buttons to function properly now. I didnt use that button anyway.

You´re so funny man... :applause:

To the OP:
You really shouldn´t hurt your Wacom if you treat it the way it is made for.
Over the years I noticed peoples mostly screw up their Pen but never heard they damaged their Tablet.

Just one tip, never ever put a cup of liquid near your Wacom!!!
