Hi,

I’m working as a 3D artist (Atuodesk Maya, Vray for Maya) and I’d like to buy a high-perfomance workstation. I put 2 systems on the shortlist. I don’t have enough experiences on this area, so is there anybody who could give me a hint, great thx!

The first system HP Z800:

Should i buy a middle rate 3D graphics card (Quadro FX 3800) or maybe the current best gamer card (GTX 295).

It would be great, if you could help me anyway.

Both hardware specs look fine and will work for Maya and V-Ray.
There will be allmost none noticeble performance improvements between the mentioned Quadro and GTX cards in 3D applications. The HP Z800 sounds technically a little bit better to me, even it has just a 500GB HDD. The Z800 offers higher cpu and memory clock, also it´s possible to use tripple-channel memory configuration as well with Xeon X5550 processors. Unfortunatelly the Z800 has a non-standard Mainboard installed, the case and PSU is non-standard neighter.

I have another hint for you.

A friend of mine is working at a company called NBWN who sells good priced Xeon 5500 series workstations at ebay. They will make you also a good price for memory upgrades. Also all systems have a 2 years (Vor-Ort-Service) Next-Business-Day warranty included.
