This is my concept for the entry: A pair of kids with 3D glasses. One kid running away and the other kid staring at the monster as it were part of the advertisement of the movie

Those are some movie theaters around the world. I always loved old theaters so I'll use them for this challenge.

I'm mixing some buildings so I can get a very interesting architecture for the theater. All done in 3D studio max

An screen cap of my alien. I loved the model but when I realized....It did not have any UV mapping!!
I forgot to do in MAX so I tried to map a 260k geometry in MAX and it crashes.
I do a 1 day totally labor to remap in BLENDER this error of mine.
I know that it would be more faster to do my mapping and then sculpt, but I liked too much this model, so I keeped it "as is"
And this will prove my computer capabilities

Hey Miguel Angel,

Cool concept, like a lot the idea :D
The secenario and the first stage on the model of the monster look great. Nice old cinema , really cool touch for the concept.

Today's work in the texturing process. For the cinema I used a texture of painted bricks mixed in a composite map with a gradient ramp for the tones.
About the street lamps i'm not sure... maybe I use only 2
Still have a lot of things to do!

Now I have put the alien in the scene.
The scene was cut with some slice modifiers and the debris was particle flow.
I want to know if I should keep the helmet or just change the material of the helmet..
Still missing some texture work, some smoke, tentacles, ray guns, the kids...uff!

Hey Miguel Angel,

The scenario looks great so far. The athmosphere and lighting mood work really well with the concept.
Like the helmet for the monster and the color glass on it. Maybe is a bit dark, but you can add some glowing details on the monster to show up the shape and form of the head through the glass helmet. Perhaps the lamps are a bit bigger in reference with the building, Only a comment :)

Nice work. Looking forward for more updates. Cheers!!

Hi! Nice update. I like the gun's rays and the barely visible features of the alien.
With all the work still to do, I wouldn`t worry much about texturing the far buildings (unless you suddenly find yourself with plenty of time left), they`d be quite dark against the sky anyway. Maybe you should work on the lighting, because the foreground and the dark orange evening sky don't seem to match. Especially the walls of the cinema are too white and clean. Maybe add some texture details to them, like cracks where the wall broke or dirt and stains in general.
Good luck with the kids, they look nice in your sketch!

cheers

You're right! I'll need more adjustments on the lighting...what i'm trying to match is a back light sunset.
Today i'll update the texturing work and next thing to do is the kids. Still is a lot to do!

All the scene is rendered with mental ray. The textures are mixed in composite material with several UV channels (specific the main building)
The alien textures were painted within max using viewport canvas.

Nice effect on the ray guns mate, really like it  And nice alien head, where did you place the light illuminating it? Is it inside the glass helmet or somewhere outside?

About the comp, there´s something that doesn´t make "click" you know, I don´t know if the buildings on the sides of the cinema ( especially the ones on the right) are diverting the attention or what, or maybe the bright yellow area in the sky is attracting my eye there.
Anyway IMHO, I think that you your image would benefit more with a camera angle more similar to your original concept, a little more closer to the cinema door and looking up, towards the alien, so that you can still see the destruction and details of the building, but focus more on the alien.

Keep the good work man!

darthmikael
03-04-2010, 04:01 AM
The alien is self illuminated. As i am using MR, I can send all the foot candles or LUX to wherever I want so the alien is so bright a a 1500w lamp, but the helmet occlude so much light and bounces within the helmet.
Yeah, about the camera I think to change it's position because the kids, but until I have them modeled, I cannot decide a new placement for the camera. That "blank space" is for the kids.
Thank you so much for your comments!

I have adjusted the scene a little bit and also the camera was tweaked. I started to use a 20mm lens with some distortion using MR Lens shader. But still have to move the tentacles and add the kids.
I hope to finish soon one of the kids to show here.

Here's the kid!
The skin is MR fast skin, and the texture was painted in mudbox.
For the hair I'm still doing some test renders because i still plan to use a hair shader. I think he's 99% complete. I just have to paint the shoes texture and model the teeth.

Here's what SERGIOANIMA asked.
The UV's and a close up of the eyes
The eye is a multi material. One for the iris, eyeball, and cornea.
The UV's was too simple. First I UV mapped the half of the geometry and then simply a symmetry modifier.
I like the small feet on this characters...like "anime toon type"
I don't like goofy's big foots in this kind of characters...but it's only my personal choice.

Here's the scene 85% finished!
I have great problems with the hair because I'm using a Mental Ray lens shader for the barrel distortion. So i have to make a MR shader for my hair.
Styling the characters took me 3 days; including render tests with different light.
The particles for the rays have motion blur...and they don't work with the hair active...so in this render I turned off all my particles.
Also I have changed the atmosphere a little bit so it matches better the environment.
Yet there is some work to do
Hope you enjoy and comment!

archaeotect
03-11-2010, 05:08 PM
I'd recommend to render the hair seperately, maybe even with the scanline renderer and composit it in later. There's really no reason to render it all in one pass. Hair and Fur gave me lots of trouble with mr, too. It's just not worth the wasted time to get it perfect when you can easily do it in post-production.

darthmikael
03-11-2010, 06:14 PM
It's no so easy for this scene render in another pass the hair because i'm using a Mental Ray distort sahder for my lenses.
Anything I render in the tab atmosphere and effects, like hair or some effect like KY trail (anything that is not geometry) it's rendered far from it's right position thanks to the distort shader for the lenses, so I decide to do as a Mr Primitive and use a Mr shader for the hair.

Why not to do the lens distortion in post?
Because it's very different the offset and the depth of the geometry. With a Mr distort shader I get a very good distortion and the depth of the scene it's perfect for me.
If I do the distortion of the lenses in post, I only move away the pixels of the rendered image and flattens the image. This don't work for my final image

I'm very happy with your critic. It really helped me a lot to improve!
Thanks Archaeotect

-In the building fracture have a little noise in the interior by the damage and having better appearance and very well with smoke by the destruccion.
-one question in the extremity of tentacles this is the final texture or you are going to put but detail.
-In the second building have to be broken the glasses by impact of alien.

Software: 3ds max,Blender,GIMP

As a revival of the stereoscopic movies, two kids use a experimental stereoscopic glasses wich can make a 3d film more realistic. The kids use the 3d glasses in an old cinema playing a matinee, unleashing the creature of the 3d film. Both kids are unaware of the danger until the creature catchs one of them!
How the kids can stop the creature?!
Put your 3D glasses and help them!

Use anaglyph 3d lenses (red/cyan) for best viewing experience!

I have to give credits to www.cgtextures.com for all the textures used in this work.
And specially to Muttyan for his StereoPhoto Maker.

Hey Miguel Angel,

Cool work, love that scenario, really great with fantastic details.
Like the idea of the 3D glasses, but maybe for your final image you can make a render without stereoscopy ( You have 1 one day left for that :))
Perhaps you can try a close up for your image with the camera near of the floor , a bit the perspective of a viewer beside the girl, I think the octopus arms of the alien can put a beautiful perspective if you go for a more closed shot. I know that is really difficult to no show up all the models, all the hard work , but is cool to move the camera and search for a nice point of views :) Only a silly comment :D

Yes. Since the first concept I decided to do it in 3D (anaglyph). But I tried to maintain in secret the stereoscopy.
It was one of the hardest parts for this project. Calculate depth, guess screens, etc...all the process for a good stereo.
But I think it worth all the work!
Thank you for your comments!
