05-24-2002, 01:24 AM
OK, OZ. Good stuff. Concerns: The tree looks dead. Heck, it looks like it's been in the fridge for too long. The grass looks like it's rencently gone through some sort of nuclear event as it's glowing green. :D
Anyhow, keep up the good work!
Man, I don't know what to say, your tree pic is great.... I agree that the grass looks a litle "radioactive" :) but other than that, ...I might as well drop out now :insane: your stuff is :xtreme:

lucascerro
05-25-2002, 03:54 AM
Wooooooow... those textures... damn! i mean... like... DAMN!!!! I disagree about the tree... it doesn't look dead... I think he (Howard) probably means that the trees look to small to be in a forest, that those long trees would be better... but I think that you can achieve the look of an enchanted forest with those "twisted" trees... And a really cool "enchanted effect"! like... gnomes, mushrooms (hmmm... mushrooms...), those glowing wisps, etc. Oh! If you have Painter 7, there's a painting tutorial that shows a forest much like yours... like... as I'm imagining yours... maybe you could look at it to see if you can recycle any idea... And about the grass, it *does* look a bit radioactive, but maybe "in" your forest, due to the lighting, it'll look better... but your scene is looking fantastic... Kudos... many Kudos... and... like equinoxx said... how did you do that "feckin georgeous tree & grass man"?

 The last update is looking really good. aswell as al your posted images of the forest
Today I was looking for tutorials for particle systems and the I also found grass tutorials. Your way of explainig it reminds me of it.
Maybe I'll post the link later.
Yea I think often the most simple way of making something is the best way. (Like you make your things with the default tools.)
If you make it so simple that people start crytisising ( <--propably wrong spelled ) that a child could made it, Then i think that it is the best compliment you can get. See for 'Picasso' People who know nothing of art describe it as a drawing made by a child.( ofcourse I don't understand the majoraty of his work) Well it also can be aplied on everything I think. Like architecture ( le Corbusier ) And on the problems in life.
Keep it up and soon your disaster in your work life go better.
At least I hope. Keep it up and don't let them/it/him/her/ or something else get you.

06-02-2002, 04:27 AM
Wow, you guys really have a lot of control over MAX then. I have enough troube using MAYA as it is. I'm jealous  ...
Thanks on the Avatar OZ, I like it too.
To Iggy. X, if he ever reads this. Picasso and others (George Braque was my favorite cubist) really tried to show the effects of 4D space on a 2 dimensional plane. Their pictures are great works, of course, but most of it still goes over our heads due to the unusual nature of their styles.:)

I've read the stuff about this so called "Parray system",
I've taken a look at the grass tutorial and... is there maybe

there another way?

@ Faeroon: over at 3DCafe (or was it highend3D) they have a tutorial on how to do the "Matrix" cascading text effect in Maya. It uses a particle emitter that emits geometry (in this case letters). You could pro'lly modify this technique to make grass with it. I know I've got a pritout of the tut around somewhere I'll try and dig it up and select out the bits about the geometry/particles stuff and post it over in your thread.

@ZrO-1:
Thx , that would be great - I'm currently trying to rework the max grass tut, which Iguiniz posted, in Maya,
but 'cause i've never worked with max, it's kinda tricky. ;)

Mahlon
06-03-2002, 03:36 PM
Oz,
Looks great and lush. Those little plants you posted --are they all geometry or part geometry/part opacity map? I have to do a whole bunch of ivy crawling on a wall for a hi-res scene, and I'm looking into ideas on how to accomplish with realism. So far, I've been using a number of scatter ogjects with opacity maps. Any advice would be appreciated.
Great work!!!
Thanks,
Mahlon
Hi guys.....:wavey: Looks like the non Plugin grass likes you,and however the grass is one pivot point in this challenge!!:surprised he he he he....Nice to see a lot of life here!
Time to update and reply!!
I have taken some time to model the ground and test it with objects and particle grass,i have olso mapped a lot of objects...................there is a lot of work to do.....:hmm:
some rep.......
to Iguiniz.X.:TNX MAN!:) eeeeehhh.......so strange days i live........he he he he . sssseya!
to dmcgrath:OH OH OH TNX!!!!it is to much!!!!tnx!
to Virtuoso:HI!!! HOW ARE YoU?haaaa tnx!nice to see you here!!!!
to Chad-D:MMMMH quik tutor?? Is a good idea,BUT WITH MY ENGLISH!!!!! OUCH! he he.I'll try to write it this week (i hope)........it could be userfull on any platform (software)due to very simple tools which is done the grass fx.
to Faeroon:I dont use Maya from long time, but somewhere (on the shelves?) there must be a scatter tool that auto place any kind of instance geometry by a num. seed....(i may be wrong about it...)
to Mr. Nice Guy:HA HA HA NICE TO READ THIS! (the scatter is good, but 4 fur fx I think)
to samartin:ha ha ha.....TNX!!tnx a lot samartin...and as u can see.......UPDATETIME!
to Prisoner:Thank u!i'll try,i'll try! uff uff uff....Im a bit late!!!!
to Jac::bounce: BOIG TNX!mmmmh about a minute on a xp1800 and 600MB.
(the scene is 1.685.471 polys........errr and is far to be finished)
to Mahlon:TNX MAN! the plants are all sweeeet dee!he he he.....
about 4 years ago i had to do an ivy wall......i used a 6 polys leaf ad after a scatter procedure on the wall......the render was twice quick than the clipmapped version, and more "solid like"...............note:the camera was a bit distant from the wall,ad it helped me to hide the simple geometry of the leaf.:)

Nice Job!!! like the composition too.. the colors and style remind me of the ambience of Shrek a bit. Very nice!
Just one thing I couldn't figure out from the replies, etc and your answers...did you use scatter for the grass or a hair plugin?
Thanks!

@ OZ: I had actually made up that signature before I made my handle ZrO-1. In fact I came up with the two things completely independantly of one annother. I thought up of the signature because all decisions in life really boil down to a yes/no, true/false, greater-than/less-than type of answer. And since I'm such a hard-core computer geek I figured why not have it be 0 and 1. I actually came up with my handle from playing online games. My handle back then was 1001101 1001010 1000111 which is my initials in binary ascii format. (a cookie to the first person who can tell me what they are). People started just typing "zero" or "one" or a combination of that so I said what the heck, I'll change my handle to zero-one, which evolved into ZrO-1.
So there you have it, the unabridged story of my sig and handle.

Yeehaw. That tree is looking phat. It's the shiznit and the bizomb. It looks a little odd without the moss, but since it's got the moss and was meant to have the moss, well, it looks great :D I like the small limbs, almost gives it a history, like maybe something happened to it and it's growing back. Can't wait to see all these little vignettes come together in the main piece.
@ Zr0-1: Wrong time of night for me to do that math and find an ascii chart, but interesting :) My favorite 0 and 1 reference at the moment is still from Snow Crash, about the ants.

Hey OZ, looking really nice...
Care for a lightining suggestion? What about something like this photo I have here? You could put the light source... like.... in that spot above the cross. I think it would put the Enchanted on this Forest of yours... hehe
no problem dude ,just send your image at gab.t.b@sympatico.ca
and will give you the links of your image
i'am hurry to see your final image ,and also to see what the killing team will do he he ,whatch your ass everybody Gabe and-OZ- are coming ,aaaaaah just joking have fun its the more important

its really cool that the light has a scense of direction oz...like its about 7 o'clock, very cool.
hey just a suggestion but for my advice...just try a test with the fog in the background a little orangish/red...might look cool...just an idea....might add a nice practical to backlight the cool cross you have there:thumbsup:
...yeah and then you might want to try putting in a purple hippo with a tu tu...heh heh

oh man, great composition. Only crit I have to do is about that darned green. Too much dark green in there man!! It gives the image a bad look. Is there nothing you can do about the grass? And, oh! You better get yourself a server and post some big pics of that (and good quality) cos i'm dying to see some!!
And smth more, play around with your lighting, it's not only the forest that's enchanted, but also the enviroment, the air and everything around it. Put some interesting light into it, and maybe a small character that plays no crucial part in the pic would completent it a bit more. It just looks like something is missing.

Whimsical, enchanting, and a true winner. Beautiful.......:)
I just knew that a colorful and whimsical character would finish your creation perfectly. The light and the dark are both sooooooooooooo very much more noticed. The light makes the deep dark set even more foreboding and mysterious(Scary), and the dark contrasts perfectly with the Light fun character.........I love it OZ, you are one fine Italiano artist........... :)
Andre Goersch
06-18-2002, 04:59 AM
Now that is a great character!
It's funny that it reminds me (why, I don't know) of the Scarecrow on The Wizard of -OZ- :applause: Hehe
The light is much better, but I think it now lacks a little contrast. Maybe if you down the fill lights on the trees on the left a little bit on the daytime image, you may get a nighttime pic even better than the other. For some reason I think the first pic have more of a night feeling than the second.
Overall, great piece..... :buttrock: Looking forward to see it finished...

LOL!! shame man, shame....was a good match though!!! What can I say, you win some, you lose some!!
there is something not right with your scene oz, i think it may be the greens...... they just look wrong.......
try maybe a green from the dark yellow/green area of the colour pallette........
and vary them a little more maybe??
And also i think the shadows and contrast is not enough.........
try more saturated colours and more contrast between shadow and light...... i think your scene would rock my socks then........
Iguiniz.X.
06-19-2002, 11:18 AM
That is looking really good, really complete an much detail.
I've read some coments and I see that the light isn't balanced well' Contrast and stuff is said to be wrong.
My opinion is that mabe the direction/angle of where the light comes from isn't the best one you can pick.
If you take a dense forest as yours and you walk in it it will only happen in earliy morning or eavning that the sun casts it light on lets say 15% from the ground. And then the light which comes form the left and is really low and won't penatrate this bright and clear trough the trees/dense forest. The low light makes it a bit mysterious ( as if a ghost which casts light arround himself is wandering in the forest) but I don't think that this is ment in this scene.
So I think the angle can be higher and that you make some holes/caps in the roof of leaves.so you get the shadow of the leaves projected on the gound. This way the light comes more natural, an I think it can be more lighter in the forest then as it is now.
Then when you gonna keep this light as low as that you might wanna chance collors because a sun that just goes under, often is more orange than a sun that is high up in the sky.
Then the sun can't be seen from with in the forest. so I would sugest that it is better to make a self iluminating object that cast light as a sun does. this so the angle of the light that penatrates through the leaves comes in, in the same angle. BUT BUT BUT I think that you with your knolage and experience of max can think of a better way of doing this.
In the night scene it is also the same, I think. Better chance the angle of were the light comes from. And chace the size of the fireflies.
well hope you can finish the scene to your own satisfaction before the challenge ends. Little time there is.
>>My coments are easy to make, but I wouldn't see me doing all this.<<

I agree with pretty much all of Kaos' comments. I think the background is the most successful. Forground and middle need more contrast. Too much ambient? I'd almost like to see a shot where that background volumetric was the only thing lighting the scene. Of these I think the black and white one looks the nicest. Keep messing with the color ones though. They have tons of potential! :)

I LOVE  1 of 4. That picture is awesome. The greyscale image reminds me of the photos from England back in the 1800's when those girls had said they got photos of the fairies. The pictures from that have the same feeling as the first image in your latest series.

man, the first image is ABSOLUTELY CHARMING. It is simply amazing!! Only thing is what others have already said about contrast, and the colors on the foreground. Too much green too same green, it needs some color variation on the front cos it looks kinda dull. Why not try painting the top vertices of the grass some other color? And use a soft procedural to give it some variation?
really good ,the first is really good ,my prefer ,the greyscale give a cool feeling
