you are looking for a particle GOAL there should be a basic tutorial for that in the maya help just do a search in it for "goal"

here's a tutorial I stumbled on just now with a quick search on youtube.. don't know how good it is, as I didn't watch the whole thing but he talks about using curves as a goal so if you need have your particles travel on paths it might be worth watching.
