I just installed win xp (and all updates), and some of my applications and a lot of my games just flat out crash to desktop on startup without error messages. These are things that should be working, like after effects, photoshop and very recent games, all of which worked fine in win2k. This is driving me nuts because I can't get any work done. I have updated everything I could think of to update. Is this a known problem with a fix or any suggestions? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's a P4 3.06 ghz, Dell Demension 8250 with a gig of RAM and geforcemx440

reinstall your games and apps then. i had the same problem at first too. It's also possible you need to get the latest patch. When I tried to run Max Payne it'd just flat out crash. I figured it was either windows or my installation, but when I checked the website, there was a patch that fixes "random crashes on loading"

I tried reinstalling the apps several times with no luck, and patched everything I could patch.

Are your apps all current and designated XP-compatible?

What games are you having problems with?

If any of the software are older releases, pre-XP that is, then you may need to try installing them in Compatibility Mode. Sometimes it'll work, sometimes it won't.

Not "installing" them in compatibility mode, you need to run them in compatibility mode, or try anyway.

Create a shortcut, Right Click > Properties > Compatibility tab

Matt,

For 'Compatibility Mode' a cool trick is to have the install disc in the drive. Copy the set-up executable to the desktop as a shortcut. Open it's properties and ensure the shortcut is linked back to the CD. Again in properties on the desktop shortcut click Compatibility Mode and try the Run In... whatever Windows mode. I'd work from more recent versions backwards. Apply it all then double click the shortcut. This will install the program in Compatibility Mode and then run as normal. This also means that certain files which could be causing the problem will be ignored when installing. I found this to work for many older games such as Independence War which was a b*tch to get running in 2000 or XP! I learnt this trick from an older issue of Maximum PC.

So that's what I meant about "Installing in Compatibility Mode".

OK, that's a new one to me. I'll keep it in mind.
