Great challenge we have here! Best of luck to all of you!

I'll go for the classic B-Movie look, low budged - low special effects, a lot of miniatures used, wires, and all kinds of non-cg effects. So for me the challenge will be to make the 3d stuff look real and bad. Also I'll try and simulate the errors that usually occurs like wrong scale (especially visible on miniatures that are destroyed by fire, water...), visible wires or on-set equipment being visible in the final shot.

Here is a test for overall look.

MoonGun and Title sequence.

Work in Progress, new animation with better timing for the UFO's is rendering as we speak :)
Also, the scene will be greatly reduced at the final editing stage due to the very limited and restrictive 30 seconds length of the trailer. Plus the footage jumps too much and it's annoying.

Testing different colour treatment, usually I tweak the final look from the beginning until the end of the project. This are some very early tests.

Thanks Vincent, glad you like it.
Here is what I've animated (and rendered) so far.

- shot 2 (the one with the title) has been redone and it's rendering right now (I've tweaked a little the shaders and the lighting and also the gun from the moon)

- the last shot is not complete, after the UFO fires at the tower a "lame" explosion will produce and the tower will collapse (in a lame way also :) )

- the editing is not final, i'm trying to keep it just 30 seconds long

I'm almost at half of the way, next giant robot, the invaders base on the moon and some other stuff.
I'm having so much fun working at this project and I hope that everyone else feels the same.

Thanks a lot guys, I'm glad you like it and best of luck to you too, what a fun challenge this is!
For me the hard part is just starting, I need to do some VFX, mostly fire and smoke (burning city, burning ufo, some explosions) but the tricky part is to make them look real (I'm trying to avoid using real footage for the effects) but also at the wrong scale as you often see in movies where they used miniature props.

I have this as a reference for the B-movie look: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-kCC8WUKYk
Notice the very lame explosions in the shot where the UFOs are under attack...

What grainy specs? Are you talking about the grain/noise applied over the image? If so how does it kill the mood? It's a clear characteristic of an old (~1930-1950) B-Movie.

Exploding UFO.

In the trailer this shot will be cut so we won't see the beginning (where the fire starts).

I'm trying to go for the old explosions: little to no fire, lots of sparks and puffy white smoke.

Fire done with emFluid3 (http://www.mootzoid.com/html/XsiCorner/emFluid3.html)

Explosion done with XSI ICE

Hi guys,

New render, the editing is of course wip, also a few shots are still missing (including the money shot and the lunar base shot). I'm not sure about the text, I'm still thinking if it's better this way or should I use voice to narrate the trailer.

Remaining shots:
- Robot destroys building 2
- Panoramic view with the city under attack by several robots and the ufo
- Humans launching rocket to the moon
- Lunar base

Let me know what do you think,
Thanks,
Adrian

hey

your entry is extremely well done. A very high standard i must say!

there is one thing that is weird though, and that is the "silen movie" text boards combined with the much later 60ies 70ies movie look.

if that is taken care of, then its actually pretty perfect.

kybel
03-09-2010, 11:51 PM
wow how did i missed this. for me, the most on topic entry this year :)

my only crit would be that sometimes the old film jittering and jumping is too major and a bit distracting.

AdrianLazar
03-10-2010, 09:12 AM
Thanks guys!

andreasng: This is the exact same thing that my wife keeps saying to me :D The problem is that I need that text if I won't narrate the trailer (accent is my main concern). Now, I could get rid of the "flowers" from the corners and make it a simple text on a simple background but then it would look to boring and forced, out of context. I still have to decide if it's wort it keeping the text as it is now (that, like you said resembles the one from the silent movies) and add sound (music and effect) so it could get a little confusing why does the trailer have text if you can add sound (and a narration).

kybel: you are right about those and I already turn them down a lot. A lot of people have complaint about those and they and you where right :) I'm working at the final shot now but I don't think I'm gonna post something new until the entire trailer is finished, with sound and everything. But I'll post some making off scene next week.

andreasng
03-10-2010, 09:32 PM
no wait. You most likely have seen trailers for the old Godzilla movies or one of the inspiration videos in the inspirational section of this challenge. There is alot of "non-silent-movie" text all over the place. Its just a matter of finding the right style for the text.
So if you converted the "silent-movie"text boards with big "scary" texts coming at the audiences face, while the narrator says exactly what the text says, you'll be fine.

you already got it, its just illustrated with the style of an incorrect era.

and as i said before. This is great, and by far the best video of the challenge.

Hej Andreas,

Thanks for the suggestion, I completely forgotten about this possibility. I'll test how it works ASAP. My main concern is that the shots I rendered are too short to work well with overlapping text. Being too short you won't be able to see what's going on if the text will stay for at least 2 seconds so that you have time to read it.

Thank again,
Adrian

Duncs
03-11-2010, 09:44 AM
You could easily get away with having a dodgy freeze frame when the text appears (keep all the scratches and slipping going), and then un-freeze when the text disappears. I'm sure this sort of low-tech hack fits with the whole B-Movie theme anyway.

Looking great, keep it up...

andreasng

Thanks guys!
I'm working on the final shot right now and I should finish that this weekend. Then I'll start working on sound and on the making of.
The only problem I see is if I need to cut a 30 or 60 seconds version to show first, then the making of and then the full trailer. I'm trying to keep the entire trailer under 2 minutes so maybe I can put the full one at the beginning and then the making of. I'll have to be sure that it's OK as I would hate to be disqualified for a technicality like this.
I plan to finish the entire entry no later the 11th of April and I would like to keep some surprises until then but still share the making of with the community.

Thanks again and good luck to all of you too!

good plan, you have almost done. Movie fits exacly to subject . Cant wait for suprises you cooking :)

About final submit, i saw entrys with all blended in one (trailer, full video and making of) and as separated. Best would be to ask on FAQ wich way is best for judging.

Im wondering about one thing. Can i ask what you using for encoding your video for flv. Im using for riva encoder - but it seams to cut of around 10 frames from beginning of video. Do you know better way of preparing flv file? thanks in advance,

Hi Staszek,
I'm glad you like it, I can't wait to see your final entry also!

About the encoding, I'm also using the free RIVA FLV found on the Deliverables page but I didn't notice any problem. I don't know if it matters but I'm outputting from the editing software in quicktime .mov format using the Animation codec and then I convert this to FLV using RIVA.

I hope you will solve the problem and good luck with the entry ;)

Hi guys,

I think that this is the final version of the trailer.
The only thing left is to ask again at the FAQ if I can submit this as the final version without having to cut a 30s version first as that's too little considering that my entire entry is only 80s. Also I need to post the storyboard before I'll be able to post the final version.

imho of all the entries i've seen, yours by far stays true to the "b-movie" theme which at the same time is also entertaining! not sure if this version is the final since i was hoping for some cheesy space invasion music and commentary, like that clip from Pixar's "the incredibles" no more supers...the noise and flickering (tho a nice touch) feels a bit too much...but those are just my nit picks...best of luck!

Wow.

Awsome , makes me search for the actual movie  . The only trailer here that captured 100% the B-movie Style

Congratulations!

Very funny ! i love your lowbudget effect ^^

And the shot in the space city is very hot too, i love it!
the only critique i can tell you it's it would be better with a typical b movie music like this here (http://www.tcm.com/mediaroom/index.jsp?cid=91554).

good job man !

Hi guys,

This is my final entry.
For me B-Movie equals low budget + cheesy idea + bad execution. I wanted to create a trailer for a classic B-movie: made in the 50s, heavy use of miniatures, lot's of errors during shooting like visible wires and very low quality special effects.

- Many of the textures are from CgTextures (http://cgtextures.com/)
- All the sound is taken from FreeSound (http://freesound.org/)
- The fire is made using emFluid3 (http://www.mootzoid.com/html/XsiCorner/emFluid3.html)

After having it confirmed that the 30-60sec of the teaser is just a guideline and since my full trailer is just 20sec more I decided tu put the entire trailer at the beginning. I tried tu cut-it to 60sec but because the entire trailer so short it looked very bad.

A big thanks to everyone for the valuable feedback received during this contest!
I had a great time working for this contest and I hope all others had the same.
Good luck to everyone else who's participating!

I've search for some music but didn't found any that I could use (copyright problems) but also I saw that some trailers from the 50's didn't had music at all or very little.

hey Adrian, great finish. Heavy composition work. Although I am not a huge fan of synthetic film hairs, scratches and other glitches, it has a nice graphical feel to it. Good job again.

BTW: I am in the same situation with trailer around 80sec long. I see you didnīt cut yours down to 30sec so I am curious if thatīs okay for the jury. Did you get any information related to it? Thanks.

hilarious piece, i love your work.
but this, I disagree with For me B-Movie equals low budget + cheesy idea + bad execution
Pulp Fiction was a B movie, as was grind house. I think you are confusing 1950's era high end effects with "B movie". They did the best effects they could. Even Star wars Episode III has not aged well in its obvious compositing errors. In another 10 years it will look as bad as any 50's era movie does to todays viewer. B movie is strictly not A list budget or talent. Many are not executed well, some are. Again I refer to Pulp fiction as a B movie that made good (none of them were A list at the time it was made.)

Just take a look at the inspiration section of the contest: http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/b-movie/inspiration.php

Plus as I said before my biggest inspiration was Plan B from outer space and that's definatly considered a B-movie.
But anyway I'm glad you like it and I respect your opinion about what a b-movie is just that I don't agree with it.

Same here.

The whole setup at CGTalk seems shady to say the least.

Weird.

Sorry to hear that. I didn't had problems that severe but it happens often that the playback stops because the movie doesn't load completly.

Even if there was a download option that worked it would be great (CG's FLV download is equally dodgy).

Anyway...when I got to see your entry it was awesome and one of the few here who have understood the brief....'B Movie'

I love it and it would get my vote. :bounce: < < sorry...had to use that smilie :D

What happens now...do we all just sit and wait? There's been no official 'closed' thread or anything like :curious:

My entry was pretty much B-Movie stylie I hope, check it out.

It would be nice if all the people entered got an official email saying when the competition entries will be drawn, it was about 10 days after i found out that the CG Secret Agent competition had been drawn. C'mon CG talk, whats happening with the entry page??

Sorry I'm so late commenting. You really nailed the look of late 1950's, early 1960's sci-fi (of which I'm a huge fan)! Dang, you even got that flying saucer-on-a-string motion just right. Makes me want to get out the popcorn and beer, and settle in for the afternoon.

The real victory here? You made a *lot* of people smile, and that's what the business is all about.
