View Full Version : Riggin' bendy arms?

I've got a cartoony style character with arms that need to be bendy and curvy rather than your normal elbow joint. I've rigged it with bones - similar to Mike Comet's tut rig but this character has no spine and for the arms I've opted for Spline Ik (so they're nice and bendy). The hand bones are seperate to the arm bones and linked through a spline shape and position constraints. Again everything is fine... until I add an orientation constraint from the hand to the spline shape so I can rotate it with the spline. Suddenley the entire rig grinds to a halt! Can someone please help me... no one can work with this as it is! I don't necessarily need to use Spline Ik, if anyone has any better ideas can you please offer them. :)

many thanks,
jbw

Instead of using orientation constraint did you try just linking it to the spine? Or linking the arm to the spine and the hand to the arm? Personaly I only use orientation constraints with the spine. Everything else I just link.

If you rig the character with physique (no need to use biped), you can change the way the elbow reacts to bending. If you go into the link subobject under physique, you can change the bend/tension down on the link so that it doesn't do hard bends, but instead makes it all nice N curvy.
