View Full Version : gforcefx or quadro4?
s0real 08-28-2003, 03:20 PM i recently got a spanking new dual 2.8 Xeon but found that when it was delivered the graphics card - a Quadro4 900 xgl - was faulty.
i sent the card back and instead of the Quadro4 they sent me a QuadroFX 500 as the other card was out of stock.
have i been wronged or is the FX 500 as good (or better) than the Quadro4 900?
is it worth hassling them for the original card?

The Quadro FX 500 is a better architecture with more programmability and a big jump in precision.
However, it is a good bit slower than a 900 XGL based on where they are positioned in the market. Check www.spec.org, you may need to look at the archives to find 900 XGL as it was replaced by 980 XGL.
Was this a Dell?

yep, it's a Dell alright, although i got it 'refurbished' from a discount Dell stockist - quite a good discount...
i think it's actually a new machine, just overstock or a deleted order or something.
the QuadroFX 500 doesn't seem to work too well in Photoshop - slow refreshing etc. which my old comp with a radeon 9700 pro seemed to be able to handle.
i don't know... it's all very confusing.
Photoshop doesn't really use the graphics hardware much.
Are there any pro 3d apps you are going to use?

i spend most of my day using 3dStudio Viz4 + AutoCAD 2002 building concept visuals with post work in photoshop when required.
on the Nvidia website the 900xgl shows better scores for 3d studio so i think i'll probably switch back to that card if poss.
do you know much about the maxtreme drivers? it's my first time using an Nvidia card so i'm not too clued up on them.
is Maxtreme a seperate driver for 3d Studio or is that just the name of the Nvidia driver?
also, do you know the pros & cons of using the GL app settings?
maxtreme is a 3ds max specific driver enhancement and not the name of the main nvidia driver.
The custom openGL app setting selection has application specific opengl settings, bug fixes, and performance tuning.
I would set yours to 3dsmax. It should not affect autocad or photoshop in any way.

Maybe the fx500 will be better with 3dsmax6 becaus it then will work best with dx9 cards. U can read the hardware spec. at discreet.com

900XGL is a somewhat better in OGL, so is 750. The following benchmarks use maxtreme (and so should you, it's downloadable from nvidia):

For now directx is not much different:

I don't think I would trust discreet and nvidia on the future benefits of directx. Not until I see some independant geforce/quadro/ati, ogl/directx/optimised drivers review for max6 like the one mentioned above.
Oh - all current graphic cards are not supposed to have any issues in Photoshop.

is the Maxtreme driver compatible with viz4?
i just downloaded the help file and it doesn't mention Viz in the list.
is it a Max only driver?
<edit>
i just installed it and it is compatible.

Dx9 support in Max (even in 6) is still a "neat" effect.
I wouldn't buy a card based on its max d3d performacne, because most likely in production or when deadlines are due, you'll be working in opengl for maximum stability.
(The ogl code has not fundamentally changed in the past 4 revisions, and is infinitely more stable then its constantly patched and constantly changing d3d counterpart.)
