View Full Version : How to create volumetric effect inside of object.
castelis 08-28-2003, 12:57 PM Hello all. I am facing this problem I have to animate vapour man. Transparent and filled with vapour, smoke etc. I would like to hear your advice about volumetric shaders in XSI. Have i to write my own shader for MR or it can be done with Ready made shaders and Render tree. Thanks. I would like to solve it thru shaders in XSI. Any sugestions. Thanx.

id say it all depends on whether or not you want to incorporate particle FX within vapor man... i would try these 2 methods.
1. particle FX inside your "vapor-man" mesh, using him as a deflector/cage. this will probably produce nice results, depending on your inginuity with particleFX in XSI. but they did come with a drastically revamped and improved rendering system in version 3.
2. try using the "volume cigerette-smoke" shader on the mesh of "vapour-man". this method may be a little trickier to get an acceptable result due to the nature of the fractal math used to drive the shader- simply put its best to be used with only cylindrical, non-irregular objects. last i checked it just plain sucked for deformations too, because the the smoke's spacial co-ordinates exist in an absolute space that isnt affected by the objects vertex deformation.--- i only tried deforming the object with a lattice though, no actual morph-targeting, which should produce similar results.
hope this helps, my suggestion is the particle-system method, because it will probably be more conducive to your necessary ends, and even render faster. but the "volume cigarette-smoke" also looks really good when you get it to respond properly.

Another thing you can try is to first draw/move your particles to make them look like a 'vapor-man' (this may also be done by using a premade mesh as a collision object and then freezing the particles) and rig them with a skeleton. For dynamic particle effects, parent some emitters at a few locations.

Thanks very much for your suggestions. I will try.
