Hi, This is my first attempt at rigging in max, and my first assignment at uni, unfortunately I've become stuck and can't seem to find the help I need anywhere.

Here I have a model I have been working on, a 4 legged mechanical spider.

Each leg has 4 joints, that's the shoulder that consists of two joints - one for up and down motion the other for side to side. (this is instead of a ball joint). then the other two joints are at the knee and ankle/toe.

My problem I am having is when I try to make a HI solver on the leg it moves nicely but the first two joints move in all directions instead of the first being side to side and the second up and down.

If I make the HI-solver from the second joint down to the toe then make the first joint the parent of them all so I can move it side to side manually then I miss out on that lovely bouncing when i move the main body up and down that is a result of the solver, instead the whole model moves as a solid object.

I'm sorry, I can't think of how to explain this any better. I'm really stuck for help now.

I've read through countless tutorials on rigging in max now and can't seem to find anything that helps me. Or I'm having trouble understanding. And my teacher doesn't know enough to help me :(

If anybody can help me, please remember I'm a complete noob!
