View Full Version : Rendering in Maya... and other minor doubts
CarlCampbell 08-28-2003, 09:39 AM I was just wondering how you guys keep track if Maya is actually rendering or not. I mean, for some scenes, the image appears instantly when you render, but on some more complex scenes it renders by sub-regions. Say that you have a scene thats gonna take a lot for each of these regions; how do you know if Maya is processing or simply has locked up (unlikely, I guess :)).
Next, is there no way to render to PNG images? is TGA the only good format to embed alpha channels then?
Sorry if these seem impertinent, I have been through the manual but I am having a lot of trouble navigating it

when doing preview renders, in the "render view" your only choice (besides scripting?) is to use the taskmanager (ctrl+alt+del - Task Manager). Then u can monitor maya.exes performance.
But, I would recomend using the batchrenderer for anything serious. It faster, more stable and you can follow the progress in the Command Feedback (on the bottom, to the rigth).
No, you can't render directly to PNG, and yes TGA is probably the best choice for print. For animation I would stick to IFF.

I mainly use .sgi files because they support 8&16 bit and they create the smallest lossless format that maya writes out. Also most apps support .sgi by default. If I need a file with a z then I just go with .iff. Iff would be the best format to use, but not all apps support it, so .sgi is the next best option.
