Compositing still needed to create realistic explosion
check this out (http://cade.scope.edu/courseware/notes/phenomena/explode.html) :)

You might want to try Pyro (http://www.areteis.com/products/maya/pyro/overview.htm), but I've found any and all 3d solutions for explosions to be awkward and the render-times horrendous. Even for the most simple test-render you usually wait several minutes, which makes tweaking a real pain...

If there is any way possible, I'd recommend you try to avoid 3d explosions and do it in post. Even in "pure CG movies" like Final Fantasy, the explosions usually aren't rendered in 3d...

i'm not sure, but since you said "nice" explosions, i'll take it they don't have to photoreal. particles will give you nice explosions, just try adjusting the "fire" effect, also fluid fx comes w/ explosions. fluid fx is photoreal, particles are not, but both are very nice as far as 3d is concerned.

thx for the link death

To have a look at loads of explosions, you could visit the site of

http://www.artbeats.com/prod/category.php?pg=2&id=6

The CDs are for professionals and expensive, but the free samples are sufficient for learning.

I don't have a clue how to use em but FluidFx seem to be accurate for this task

Would love to play around with em but what I heard and saw they are pretty complex. Check the libraries there should be some explosion examples. :)

They are, and unfortunately they take a very long time to render.

no they don't take long to render....just found out that you can render fluids in the hardware render buffer and they are super quick!!!! Try it. Go to your visor and import an example explosion scene and go to your HW Buffer and render...done in about 2 secs. give or take a little.

thanks for all the great suggestions so far. i must have hit the back button when i posted b/c it left out the end of my post.

anyway, i'm using the vector render. so the real life explosiosn wouldn't really work for that look. and i know that some of the particle efx don't render with the vector render. does anyone have experience with explosions and such with the vector render?

Good to know.
But I think there are some remarkable differences in quality between the output of the HW Buffer and the SW renderer.
Some fluids look okay in HW Buffer, some other certainly not.
Or is that a consequence of my pitiful video card (GForce 3 T400)?

Not sure but the Hardware Buffer is supposed to be some kind of preview anyway. Therefor it's great. Finally a way to play around with diffferent settings of fluids. In final rendering the rendertimes should be taken into account anyway IMO

you'd be surprised how good they look.

You could use a particle emulation application like ParticleIllusion 3.0 .
It has preset explosions and fire effects that are ready to be composed over your render. You have lots of control over the effects to so you can really do some cool things. Its not as time consuming as creating particle effects within Maya.
Just a suggestion.
Ayjay.
