Here is a little piece of concept for the attack pods. The arms extend to the ground for easy pickup. Once it grabs the humans it places them inside the head. It opens up like a kettle and place them inside.

My inspiration for this project comes from several films. Including Mars Attacks, War of the Worlds, This Island Earth. The alien invasion themes always come to mind when thinking about B movie ideas. I'm trying to go for the classic radio announcer narration along with classic television broadcasts. This should be a fun challenge and I can't wait to see all the other submissions.

Here is a brief outline of what I'm trying for.

OUTLINE: Alien Invasion

Starting Location: Living room

Fat guy lying down on the couch. Wearing a wife beater, sweatpants and glasses. You see he starts to dose off. The tv is on in the background playing a B-movie marathon. The man starts to get tired. Several shots of him falling asleep watching the tv.

The house begins to shake, then silence. The man looks around confused and frightened. After a few seconds of silence the man starts looking around the couch for the remote. He looks to his left and sees the remote in the hands of a giant killer robot. The responds with a â??thanksâ??. The robot replies with a â??your welcomeâ?? in robot voice of course. The man leaps from the couch and starts running away from the robot. They continue to chase each other around the couch for a few laps.

The roof to the house is lifted from the walls. The tall alien walker lifts and throws the roof off to the side. The man screams and continues to run. The giant claw from the waker picks up the man as he runs in place. The man is lifted and dropped into the head of the walker where he is shredded in the massive robot.

The camera pans around the suburb neighborhood as we watch the destructive forces from the aliens. Spaceships destroying houses, alien robots flipping cars and breaking structures. This goes on for a while.

Back at starting house. The man wakes up from the invasion dream. The tv shows a similar robot from his dream. The man's â??wifeâ?? asks off screen if he wants any coffee. The man says â??yesâ?? as he cools down from the awful dream he just had. The camera pans up as the coffee is being stirred. She yells to him â??you want cream with that, hahahahahaâ?? in robot voice. The robot squeezes an eyeball over the coffee, a white cream shoots out of the eye. The mans wife is the killer robot from his dreams.

The camera leaves the house through the kitchen window. Mass destruction is taking place across the neighborhood as the real alien invasion takes place.

Nice. It will be great shot. I like camera move and animation and overall colours..

Something with explosion state not fits perfecly. Also light could lighten up more when its stands on this bulding ( in Ps or in 3D) . Robot shader(more metal look) was better in your previous tests renderings but those little dirt bumps makes it look more detailed and this is cool.

Hey Dan coming together nicely. Can you share how you placed the houses. Did you place them all individually or did you use some sort of instancing script? It looks like most of the objects are low poly so I don't imagine it would take a lot of memory if you did place them individually. Just Curious! :)

Hi, thanks for the comments. When I made the neighborhood I started with the road. Then onto building one house and hand placing each one down the street. Basically, I made one street block and duplicated it a few times. The easy way out.

Aliens just know where the good stuff is :) I wish one day aliens would attack a strip club..that would be funny.
I'm not a big fan of clean refflections, because allmost everything in nature is glossy. And I cant imagine space ship going through the atmosphere so clean. Allthough glossy ref. boost your render time... I'd suggest making flying pieces of paper and other dust in a foreground :)

For that last shot I used Nuke for the camera shake. I try to do most of the camera shake in maya to control it a little better, but for this one I added it in post to see what it would look like. I think it looks pretty good. Plus it saved a lot of render time for me.

Great suggestion, I'm totally putting some dust in that shot. As for the reflections I'm also not a big fan but I'm going for the campy look. Thanks!:D

your project is starting to look good - what render engine are you using in maya??

I am using Mental Ray for all my shots. Thanks!

Software: Maya

So for this shot I wanted the saucer to lift up some cars. I attached rigid bodies to the cars and applied and newton field to give it that random crazy movement.

So the invasion has begun. In this shot a cop car gets blasted. I'm rendering with maya software for the time being to save some render time.

i would suggest some heavy filtering. Maybe desaturate everything except when a color spikes, so your'll get a more refined look.
scratches and dust, or a VHS treatment would also help alot.

i like the concept, and the animation is good. The final look lacks the same polish.

I'd like to reiterate my last post, the robot voice is what is rough around the edges. The old voiceover was fine. As a matter of fact I liked the old voiceover. It had a B-movie feel to it.

The robot voice is very distorted and really hard on the ears.

Also the new version has a weaker ending for the 30 second trailer. We see clips of things then it just stops playing. I can't remember any issues with your older version (maybe the older voiceover helped with that?). In the newer version you'd have to do something like shuffle the robot shooting clip to the end of the trailer and make him fire at camera, or put in the plane crashing and cut there. It needs to end on a strong note.

You can totally disagree with me! I just didn't want my opinion to be misunderstood ;)
