Longhorn won't be around till at least late 2005 if MS is lucky. I've read as late as 2007 due to all the security dissaters that have plauged Windows lately.
It's interesting how slow Dell and HP are to adopt Opteron despite the potential corporate/consumer move to 64Bit. Maybe they see the consumer/corporate waters getting muddied. Be sure that Intel is doing some strong arming on these guys.
Arghh wish I had the links.
All computer companies like Dell and HP make serious coin on the Server side. Consumer spending is much more fickle and trendy. Having loads of 32Bit PCs already in the channel must have them wringing their hands. Which way to go??
Is 64Bit for fringe consumers or is it landgrab market for immense new sales. Gateway is on the ropes and they are betting on Gamers and the 64Bit market to take off in 2004.
Jerry Sanders Chairman of AMD went to bat for Microsoft durring the Antitrust trial in 2002. Worked a deal with MS in process to meet out native support for their upcoming 64Bit solutions. Before the trial ended, MS anounced that AMD would have native 64Bit support much to the chagrin of Intel who is/was having a hard time with the Itanium.
sorry for the ramble but that a condense version.

Windows favors whatever earns money for its developer.
There is no consumer demand for 64-bit right now, presently all
of the demand for 64-bit computing is prosumers, professionals,
enterprise, and a few hardcore gamers.
Part of the problem that AMD will have in getting Dell on board is
supply. They probably won't be able to MAKE enough Opterons to
feed Dell's supply chain, let alone affect Intel's desktop business
in any material way. The real issue for Intel is that if AMD64 gets
enough mindshare, they may end up being compelled to adopt it.
