Story:
- "The taxman is coming! The taxman is coming!", screams the baby bonobo before he secures his piggy bank really tight...

It's another year and our hero "Bonobo Gordon"; has more work to do, protecting his family from the evil taxman from outer space. Jessica Dollface, his girlfriend realdoll/cyborg is hanging in there, just being pretty and all, but it's our hero who will fight for his baby's school and lunch! Baby bonobo learned with dad at young age that when the man comes, it's time to protect your savings, otherwise after his visit you may end with no money at all!

This is my entry for the B-Movie challenge. I tried to come with an original idea, with a twisted unusual couple and their baby. My main focus was the body/face expression, to help with the storytelling.
Main inspirations were Gil Elvgren, Frank Frazetta and Bonobos in general, who pay or not taxes. I dedicate this work to all of us, hard working Bonobos.

It was a pleasure but I barely made to the deadline. I wish I could do better with some more time but now it's done.

I like to thank everybody for your suggestions to help me to improve this work. A very special thanks goes to my girlfriend Jessica, who supported this whole insanity, allowing me to work crazy nights in order to get this done. I love you Jessi!

Also a big thanks to Luxology for Modo and Pixologic for ZBrush. Nothing that you see here would be possible without those.

Cheers,
-Kris

I have a title in progress but I think I'll not reveal it completely, just to add some mystery ;)
Here you go:

"B????o Jones and The ??? Thing From Outer Space"

I can guarantee that the complete sentence makes much more sense and has potential to be quite entertaining ;)

More to come... hopefully!

This is the general idea for my entry.
Two things I might add to the concept later (or just add it straight to the final image, not sure...):

1) there's a pin-up girl at the bottom left, by 'bonobo's' side
2) the 'thing' is wearing an IRS badge (of course!)

Inspirations: Gil Elvgren (pin-up girl), movie poster 'The Phantom Speaks' (for general layout and feel), Frank Frazetta (for general badass stuff yo!), my brothers and sisters, the Bonobos...

You've really captured the spirit of 50s-60s B movie posters with this one. It's almost good enough as it is, if your aim is to emulate the painterly style of Reynold Brown's famous posters

So, I had the whole concept in my mind already and did some sketches at work that I painted yesterday.
BUT, I started the models first. I just didn't post them just yet but I did quite a bit of work on the bonobo and the pin-up face between Sat-Sun. Between Thu and Fri night I cleaned up/remodeled some old models/topologies that needed a cleaner topology that works better in ZBrush (more even quads, less stars, that ZBrush has a hard time subdiving, creating a not very smooth surface...). I'll start posting some progress on the models, maybe tonight.

Thanks again for all your kind words. This challenge will be fun!

KOryH,
thanks! Your work is fantastic!

I know some people would enjoy the cartoon version better, like the one in the concept, but the intention is to go for something more realistic. I might have some time to play around with a more stylized version at the end but not sure if I'll have this time.

Now back to the pin-up girl.

Hey! Thank you so much guys!

This is actually a bonobo, not a chimp. Bonobos are smarter, their proportions are more elegant, much closer to human proportions than chimps. They have smaller heads and their arms look more like human arms... and they are extremely horny! Maybe that's why the pin-up girl is all over our super hero, uh? :D
This is my very first attempt to model a primate and still looking for more and more references (mostly bonobos standing up, so I can see their proportions better). At this point, other than face, proportions are kinda made up, which is not cool...

I'll post the pin-up doll in progress now, before I go to bed...

The close up looks great, but the 2 images, from farther away...I don't know, it seems off in some way that I can`t put my finger on. It might be the jaw, but I'm just not sure. It might also just be the fact that she's bald. Don`t take my word for it, though. I'm not the best critic when it comes to subtleties. Anyway, amazing progress. And yes, Elvgren's work is incredible, and she's definitely got the look.

I completely agree with you. I noticed the same thing when I saw the thumbnail. It's a start and there are things I like in it but I need to do a lot of work on her face before I'm happy with it. I never use blue prints on my personal work and that costs a lot of re-work normally, but that's the only way I will learn and understand the subtleties. I think the problem is both with her chin and head shape. Cropping into her face she looks alright but when you see the whole head it does look kinda weird...

Thanks!

I watched a documentary on the Bonobo about a year ago. The most amazing part was where the females would do various "favors" for a piece of food, or a bakscratch, or other treats. Really quite amazing. They say prostitution is the oldest profession. If the Bonobo are any indication, it goes even farther back than we imagined

Well, I wasn't going to admit it but... I think I'm a bonobo! I know that my modeling looks like if I hadn't opposable thumb, but trust me, I have them! Lazy and not too skilled, but opposable. I also share their love to "love", that's what made me suspect... :surprised
Btw, Love the pin up girl! I see the point on the jaw and cheeks, but that doesn't really disturb me. Overall I think she has a nice expression with his small mouth but fleshy lips. Congrats for the good work! :applause:

I find it so incredible how attuned to facial recognition humans are. With all the variations in facial structure, hundreds of different shades and hues; as many variations as there are people, give or take some twins, Yet we can still sense when minutiae are not as they should be. I think that's one of the things that makes creating art so fun. Mimicking mother nature is a huge challenge, and so rewarding when we accomplish it.

If anyone can do it well, though, it's you.

I love her !
I have a question Kris:
What shader is it ? it's a ZB screen, right ?
Because I didn't find a nice shader to put on my models when it is time to paint.
Thanks for the answer ! ;)

No problemo!

Here's the shader I used for this ZBrush screencap:
sculpy_50percent.zip (http://www.antropus.com/bmovie/sculpy_50percent.zip)

Unzip it under C:\Program Files\Pixologic\ZBrush 3.5 R3\ZStartup\Materials (or wherever you installed ZBrush) and it will be available on the materials menu every time you start ZBrush.

About the list of fonts used on the poster layout, here it is:

toonish
tekton Pro
dearJoe four
SamdanEvil
Cartoonist
Friday13
Arial Black

Just do a quick google search, typing something like "free fonts toonish", for example. You should be able to find those easily this way.

Cheers,
-Kris

Awesomeness! Totally dig the idea of the robot arms. If I may ask, do you always texture as you sculpt, or is it just sometimes like for this challenge? If so is there a technical reason for it or are you just letting loose your creativity; Or is that just the way you roll?

Cheers.

Dang once again another awesome sculpt. Question have you already set up your UV map on your characters? Because that is what I do I make the low base in maya and then layout the UV and then go into zbrush to sculpt. After im done sculpting I just create a normal map and etc in zbrush. How and when do you make your UV map?

Thanks and work is awesome again.

thank you so much!

AJ,
it gets trickier, I promise you :)

NinjaA55N,
thank you so much and back at you man!

JurajMolcak,
B grade is my middle name.

RageOfAges,
it's just a bad habit I have. ZBrush made it so easy and insanely fast to previz the colors by using polypaint that most of the time I get seduced by this feature and end by modeling and texturing at same rate. But of course, to define the main forms and proportions you need a plain model, otherwise the depth on the textures messes you up about the forms. It's like going back and forth between color/no color. It's part of my personal workflow.

ilasolomon,
ha! I will turn this into a tripple x then! :p

akacg,
this is more of a concept at this point. I'll retopologize his face completely so I didn't bother with UVs this far. Once happy with the final low poly, then I can UV the whole thing. There's no wrong way, just different ways!

Vimmy,
this is one of those challenges where we have to start a model to look cool and then slowly turn it into a turd. Don't worry, my plan is to "turdarize" this thing! :D

BUZZFX,
this is more of a concept at this point. The intention is to make the final thing look like rubber, probably showing seems or making completely evident it's a mask. The color variation will be more aggressive and airbrushy :)

I did some paintover on my still bald pin-up. I hope she looks more proportional now.
She's still bothering me a bit. After some closer inspection, I think I have it pinned down.

1) Her chin and lower jaw jut out too much given the positioning of her lips. It might be an optical illusion from the slight indentations on her cheeks or the angle, but if you block out her mouth it looks as if she's pushing her lower jaw so that her lower teeth are in front of her upper teeth. I don't think it's possible to do that and have her mouth in the position it's in though. (I've tried to see if I could when I saw that and every time I try my jaw slides back.)

2) She's got a very pronounced brow ridge that doesn't blend into the forehead, especially between the eyebrows. I think a bit of smoothing to make it a more gradual transition could clear that right up.

I hope that's helpful for you. I'm also compelled to mention that the bonobo is astounding, beautiful work there! Now if you'll excuse me, I need to find that "I hate Antropus" sign up sheet. ;)

I spent the night of Friday finishing the retopology for the new male base mesh I was talking about. Based on this new body I could start a female new base mesh and my plan is to use this new model as a starting point for future works (participating of those challenges is the only way to make me work on those things at home...). I spent the whole Saturday and great part of today modeling her body, which is not finished yet (hands, back, feet, knees and elbows were barely touched). The poly paint is also very basic.
I used PUVtiles in Zbrush for quick UVs. Rendered in Maya/Mental Ray (1 HDRI, one area key light, one area back light). Only color map used so far. I'll leave her alone for now and go back to the Bonobo tomorrow night after work.

Really great work here!

Something about the eyes doesn't sit too well with me. I cant quite pinpoint it. I think the outer corner might be sitting a tad too high.
Maybe the neck appears a bit thick in the 3/4 view? Somehow that entire view looks a bit drag-queen to my eyes if you disregard the body, which is very nicely done, and only look at the head. I think the chin being so far forward might be a part of it.

Cheers and keep the great updates coming!:arteest:

It just keeps getting better! Great stuff Kris, can't wait to see another epic piece.

I know you use x64 maya, and i do not understand why my x64 maya2010 loads slower on my x64 xppro machine than my 32 bit maya 8.5, it also seems to slow down and take longer when opening my scene files with highresolution texture maps. As a result, i switched back to using the 8.5 version, when in fact i expected the x64 maya2010 to be give me faster and more efficient use. My x64 machine seems to be able to use more than 2gb of ram for the 32bit maya 8.5 as well. I wonder what other advantages with using an x64 maya compared to a 32 bit one for functionality and speed if the system can use more than 2gb ram for the 32-bit application.

my specs:
Windows XPpro x64
4gb ram
Intel centrino duo T7200 2.Ghz

Great.

A chunky monkey holding a moonshine jug (retro bear can), smoking some cubans, holding the hand of a beautiful woman. If the IRS sends their alien goon, then the suspect must be heavily into blackmarket contraband, and living beyond his means.

Truly inspired design work. The Nosferatu teeth on the alien are brilliant. :buttrock: He needs a UFO with tinted windows and government plates.

Great work. :buttrock:

Really amazing progress on this thing. I turn my head away for 2 days and BLAMO! there`s like 5 huge updates.

Were you planning on putting any kind of clothes on Bonobo Jones? I have nothing against nudity whatsoever, however It is my opinion that the monkey junk doesn`t work well with the comedy and wittiness of the poster. Regardless, I'm sure sure it'll all look awesome in the end.

Totally loving the actor names, btw. Manny Enasuit is priceless.

Some posing and lighting tests. I chopped both models, turning them into two mannequin proxys. This way it's much quicker for me to pose them, instead of rigging or using transpose. Those processes will be used at the end, when I'm satisfied with the final poses.

actually not! I'm kinda concerned about the hair. If everything goes wrong I'll end up by painting it. I'm trying to use only the softwares that I have licenses, so no chance to try any fancy renders like Modo or Vray or even shave and a haircut plugin. So, I'll stick with Maya/Mental Ray and will see how far I can go with it!

This is looking just so amazing, Kris! The colors are fantastic and very period. I'm not as big a fan of having the title right over the center of the poster, especially when the upper left is so empty, as it takes a little away from the beautiful image. THe woman's expression feels a bit empty right now, not sure whether that was what you are shooting for. Sexy models can certainly be vapid, but myself, I like seeing more expression and emotion. But that's just down to personal preferences, I can't say it doesn't fit as is, though! :)
Great work!

Personaly I am not sure about the pose of the lady and the chimp. From your inital sketch I was expecting the chimp to run towards the camera with one arm up to shield him from the laser beams. Right now they seem to be quite unimpressed by that alien.

Updated on this one:

- reworked her face and expression, most notably her chin, cheekbones, nose and eyebrows
- increased the size of her eyeballs and then increased the size of the irises
- increased the length of her eyelashes
- changed her left arm position. It was echoing bonobo's arm and that was bothering me
- started modeling her shoes
- did a quick and cheap paint over study for her hair style and color
- did a quick paint over for their outfits

Now I'm ready to start the UVs for both characters so I can finally add some nice texturing instead of plain polypaint.

antropus, this is really excellent work. probably my fav in this competition. excellent poses and great character design!.
can you explain a lil bit more in depth about the choped up models; the way your posing them? just curious how your gona go on about reprojecting the detail onto the original models or is that even necessary? never seen posing done like that before, unless its a standard way of doing it and im completely out of the loop haha
thanks!

Gio,
thanks for stopping by man. I'm glad you're liking it so far

big-whoop,
sure. Chopped characters like this are normally used in production. Animators would pose and animate characters using proxy versions of the final models that sometimes are the actual asset, only chopped so they can animate faster since there are no deformations involved but mere objects that can be freely moved/rotated. So I'm doing the same thing here. Instead of worrying about bad deformations and time consuming skinning, I just chopped them, moved the pivots to where the joints should be and voila: ready for posing in seconds! I'll not transfer anything from those proxy models. They are merely a reference for the final poses that will most probably be done in ZBrush transpose or Maya, maybe a little of both. All changes are being made to the original models, not the proxies so there's no need to transfer anything. I can just import those as another subtool and work on top of it :)

Cheers,

I started painting some textures today, just her face at this point. More color variation by adding a subdermal map, added specular map and some work done on the eyebrows and eyelids/eyelashes. It's subtle but I think she got a little better now.

Beautiful work :)

I really enjoy how you're capturing the quality of the skin.

You said this WIP was inclusive of the expression? If so I think it'd be great to see a little more over-the-top emotion on his face.

Thoughts: bottom corners of the lips seem to be hanging a little lose for an open mouth with exposed upper teeth. Don't think you've worked the ears yet so will not mention. I feel like the nostrils might also be pulled back a bit, right now the seem sort of relaxed? Unsure. Think both nostrils and lips would maybe have some more texture around the tips of the muscles? Jaw definition seems a little low to the back end but then maybe that's just the way Bonobos are? :D

All these are minor things and probably don't help but, well, just thought I'd try to be constructive or something by way of thanks for providing the inspiring work. It makes it a little easier to jump into the masses of sculpting I've got going on at work each day :)

Hey Antropus, the bonobo is look great! Im a huge fan of your work! I was wondering if you could shed some light on your Zbrush sculpting techniques? Your wrinkles are so well done, and I have a hard time getting that level of crispness in mine. What alphas do you use to start out with? Do you use the inflate brush immediately after laying down the first line? Or do you then use the standard brush and bring up the skin around the wrinkle? Sorry if Im asking too many questions, but its not often that I get to ask masters like yourself technique questions. Cant wait to see more progress!

Thanks in advance,

James

I agree! He looks evil now. I'll do some renders before I fix his facial expression though, because with the lighting and subsurface scatter, those details will be gone like 20-30% and he might not look as evil at the end (and also because of the semi-profile final pose).

Hey Kris,

putting all technical excellence in your work aside, about which there can be no argument, here's some food for thought for you.

I've been thinking about your concept and something stops the whole thing for me dead in its tracks. It just does not take off in my head and the reason is your title " Death & Taxes From outer Space...", which is, to be frank, quite an imagination-killer, at least for me. While I fully understand the humor in regards to the IRS etc, I dont think its a good idea to pursue the caricature/sarcasm route for this challenge, but would suggest you change the title to something more "serious", which goes along better with the whole B-movie theme instead, ie "The Thing From Outer Space That Turns Men Into Apes" (a rather lame suggestion, I know, but you catch my drift I am sure). Just something that really makes you see an interesting story behind the image, something that takes you into another world, which the topic of taxes really does not, regardless of how hated & feared the IRS is. ( A close acquaintance of mine has been audited twice already!) Taxes just carry a bad aftertaste and drag you down, if not on the conscious, then definitely on the subconscious level, which I don´t think you really want to have associated with your work. Bottomline is, right now I don't see an interesting story behind it and this image could create so much more inside the viewers mind with a proper, stereotypical title, than just appreciation of the excellence in models etc.

To support what I am saying, here's a quote from the challenge instructions:
"The story is the primary component and is the most crucial element in all judging. The emotive impact and implication of “the story behind the image” is the aspect that is most important.Your work must capture the imagination of the viewer and draw them in without relying on any prior knowledge of the story."

Cheers and keep up the great work!:arteest:

PS: I think a different kind of pose for her might also work a tad better. Something that makes her more of a bimbo relying heavily on Bonobo for protection perhaps?! Having her in a sitting position implies some sort of comfort which, depending on where you want to take the whole thing, might or might not be such a good thing overall.

PPS: To me that stool implies a Diner's environment, so "Mars Attacks Cafe`50's" or something like that might work as an alternate title with that current pose. Anyways, just my 2 cents. ;)

Very preliminary test. I finished the UVs and started painting some color maps. I'm not happy with this render at all but I'm too tired to try to improve it tonight. I'll be checking your threads and replying to mine, but I'll not be posting any new images for the next 4 days. My girlfriend's family will be visiting us and I'll not touch this project at all...

You guys have fun!
-Kris

ps.: I will be back soon...

ekah, Pteropus, Gunilla,
thank you so much!

Vimmy,
he is angry because I modeled him a small package :D

TheRazorsEdge,
I hear you! There are a couple of other elements being worked on, including a fourth character that, as I mentioned in one of my previous posts, will help this mess to make more sense :)
The title is a working title but yeah, it will be IRS/Tax related/funny, that's the whole point of this work and some people will like while some will not. It's understandable and all good!
Thanks man!

-Kris
