My Movie Title is The Splodge, inspired by the B-movie The Blob. In the Blob there's an iconic scene with people fleeing a cinema, as a nod to that I'm going to center my film around something similar but set at a drive in movie theatre.

Before committing to storyboards I wanted to see if I could create a satisfying surface effect for the monster, I plan on making a bipedal character with the ripple effect traveling down its body. You can check that out below. Cheers.

Very nice effect! Would you mind giving a brief explanation of how you did that?

Sure. I created a custom brush in photoshop for the displacement shape, I then painted an image several times longer than it was wide, I imported this into after effects. The comp was set to have the same width and height, so not all of the image appeared in frame and then I animated the image to get a downward movement.

I made both ends of the image the same so that the animation would loop. I then applied an image displacement to the animation in ae. Once this was done I exported an image sequence for use as the displacement map.

Here is a concept for the splodge, not sure about it I like some parts and might tweak some other features.

Well, that's a lot easier than I was expecting. Thanks!

Some more pre-vis testing, I've roughed out the base of the creature, this is another surface test to find out how to deal with the UVs to get the appropriate flow down the character, also I've been testing the soft body dynamics to acheive a jelly leg feel when the foot is planted on the ground.

The design of splodge is very cool...and I like it that his head's transparent/translucent to show the brain inside.

Cool Man I love the creature and the material on it all the best....

Very nice, this could look stunning! I see your point that the UVs are crucial but it looks like you have it working pretty well so far.

Keep it up

Cheers guys, here is a test I've done for shedding some of the gloop, not quite the effect I was after, I will need to work on the sim some more.

Looks pretty good - I reckon it's not as bad as you think. It looks a little strange against the grey shader but, once you've got your proper materials and lighting in there, I think it'll be quite convincing,

Impressive stuff - keep going!

Yeah I skipped a proper material test as the displacement+GI+refractive materials were adding up to killer render times, I played around a bit today to come up with some alternative lighting, I think for the full film the monster will need to be excluded from GI and have his own lighting rig, this is the same sequence with new lighting and a different mat for the flow.

For the sim I'm going to see if I can get it to shed in a less gobby manner, would be cool if I can get stalactites of goop hanging off him and shedding in larger clumps.

Thanks Lorne, the storyboards are going to take me a while, in the meantime I did a quick bit of head sculpting for one of the minor characters, I think I might push the stylisation a bit further.

hahaha! nice! how long to render a single frame? how many quads? is it super hi res to get the desired displacement? and can you explain how you did the dripping effect? thanks!

Cheers peeps, the base model is about 2500 polys, I'm using Vray displacement rather than 3ds max displacement modifier, with GI the render time is about 10 mins per frame, with a 4 light setup without GI its 5 mins per frame, there's a bit of a brief explanation for the displacement map on the first page.

I made an entry for the 3dtotal speed sculpt challenge which I began after this comp started and I'm thinking of killing 2 birds with one stone, and use the model for this challenge too, it will be a character in a short segment where the splodge is fighting another monster.

Here is a displacement render out of max, There are some tearing issues with the head, I'll need to recheck the UVs

Hate to be a broken record, but the goo monster is incredible. How'd you do the drip sim?

Thanks for the feedback guys, the drip sim is from realflow, I still want to tweak it out some more as it isn't shedding quite how I'd like it to, the storyboard should be up soon, I've been distracted by some other stuff. Cheers.

Well other work has got in the way of this project sadly, I have some free time again, not long to go but I'll see what I can get done, I'd already completed a large part of the modeling so I'll see how I go, cheers.
