Has anyone seen this amazing anime? I was cruising the channels one night and caught FLCL(Furi Kuri/FoolyCooly) on Cartoon Network Adultswim.

I'm generally not that impressed with most anime(except for the big ones like Akira and GhostnShell), and I tend to think that most of it is dime a dozen crap.

I Tivo'd every episode of FLCL after being hooked by watching about 3 minutes of this show. I now have all the DVD's(there are six episodes)

I could never do it justice by trying to explain it all here, but it involves a japanese high school kid named Naota who lives in a strange town with a mysterious, steam spewing factory on a hill shaped like a giant iron. His older brother's girlfriend lives under a bridge and is always trying to make out with him.

A crazy chick on a vespa Motorscooter is always trying to nail him in the head with a Rickenbacker bass guitar. A giant lump on his head grows at the end of every episode and 2 massive robots sprout out of his forehead and have a fight. Really wicked ass fights with huge explosions and destruction on a massive scale.

The style changes constantly, from Bakshi, to Plimpton, to top notch anime style, to crappy, simple speed racer style -- I even saw a little South Park thrown in. Each episode is total trip, and if you like animation, you've gotta check it out. I rarely feel the need to rave about something I've seen, but this show is awesome.

there's also a great alt rock jap sountrack by some band called the pillows.

Yes, two thumbs up for FLCL. It's a complete headtrip. The unexplained spontaneous nosebleeds in the middle of an Evangelion-esque mission-control type scene had me rolling.

I think the nosebleed is pretty easy to explain if you just think a bit about it. They got the nosebleeding when the guitar was pulled out of they guy. And the guitars show one's maturity. I think that's how they said it. And in Animes they get nosbleeding when they see something erotic or get horny or something like that. If you watch the DVD with the audio comment you understand most of the anime. And I guess you'll understand what the anime itself is all about at all.

And the constant change of the drawing and animation style during the Anime is the greatest thing about it for me. I mean you see how you can draw the same characters in a different style. I like the quick and dirty style the most.:D

Yes those nosebleeds were the result of the semi-erotic scene of her digging into his head and pulling out his guitar :p. Usually though in anime the guys get nosebleeds and women are the subject of it. This time the women were getting excited which was cute to see.
But to stay with animation the ending fight scenes in each episode are completely out there and always beautifully animated (compliments of Gainax studios). If you animate and need inspiration definitely buy that one it's awesome reference for super stylized motion.
Also good ot watch for those who think 3D is going to kill 2D ! try getting that look and feel in 3D :p. this is off the subject but I think Most animators got distracted when 3D tools came out because of the novelty factor but it also allowed those who couldn't draw to get in on it and that part is great. However this should not be interpreted as the downfall of HandDrawn animation as a whole.
Any way in closure I'll also suggest you guys watch anything that has the Production I.G studios Logo on it, "Dead Leaves" is a pretty good little story with fun animation as well. look for it online.

afaik FLCL was made by Gainax in corporation with Production I.G. or is this false information. I mean I really like Production I.G. but I thought Gainax did most of the anime drawing. Anyone got information what was done by production I.G. and what was done by gainax?

You're right, It was mostly produced by Gainax apparently. Sorry for that mistake I'll correct my previous post.
