Start of modelling for main Cop character "Cleetus Cornwall" a washed up actor on the way out, trading off his previous success in the blockbusters.

Duncs

Ok, my idea:
"Attack of the killer snails"

In order to combat global food shortages, scientists have developed a chemical called Gigantium Fertiliser which enables them to grow monster vegetables. However, somehow snails have got into the testing lab and been exposed to the chemical, causing them to mutate.

I'll be making a movie trailer featuring the cop shown above "Cleetus Cornwall" as well as an ambitious young reporter "Annie Travis" who hopes to use the B-movies as a stepping stone to the bigtime.

Remember you from the Steampunk challenge so I guess this will be solid piece of animation. Nice character so far. Classy concept too. Good luck!

Heh, it would be awesome to have the army and airforce mobilised trying to blow the snails away, but failing to penetrate their tough shells .... the irony being the snails don't seem to even notice, they just sit in the same spot munching on trees :)

goodluck!

First draft of script - Storyboard coming soon....

KILLER SNAILS

Open on old-school news bulletin intro.

VO
“Terror grips the globe as mutated gastropods gorge on cities.”

Title card “Attack of the Killer Snails”

“Starring... “

Scene 1 Ext. Cleetus’ trailer.

Open on CU of side of trailer. A cheesy mural of a young Cleetus with his name beneath fills the frame.

“Cleetus Cornwall”

Camera pulls back as the real Cleetus (older and fatter than in the picture) kicks open the trailer door.

CLEETUS (roars)
“More Whisky.”

He misses the step and falls flat on the deck. Guy in snail suit looks round(?!)

VO
“And...”

Scene 2 int. Growing Lab

We are in a scientific building. Carnage reigns with slime everywhere. A hardened female reporter – Annie Travis - is interviewing a boffin who looks petrified.

VO
“Annie Travis.”

Annie’s title card appears on screen. She struggles to appear freezeframed until it disappears

DIRECTOR (offscreen, whispers)
“Action"

ANNIE (to boffin)
“Professor, can you explain exactly how these snails came to mutate?”

BOFFIN
“We’ve been using chemicals in an attempt to arrest the progress of global famine. As you can see the results have been... extraordinary.”

He holds up a huge carrot top.

“Somehow the snails breached our security and, as a consequence, have been exposed to catastrophic levels of gigantium fertiliser.”

A grotesquely oversized snail head appears in shot and chomps the carrot top and half the boffin’s arm. He runs into the camera spurting blood on the lens.

Scene 3 Int. Police station bathroom

The foot of a snail slithers out of frame revealing Cleetus’s feet beneath a cubicle door. Cut to inside cubicle we see the headlines on the paper Cleetus is reading – “Escar-go home!” Cleetus lowers the paper and does his shifty eyes.

Scene 4 Int. Subway

MCU Cleetus running, train moving in opposite direction as backdrop.

VO
“A Cop in his prime...”

Cut to wide, train leaves, revealing Cleetus, running on a slime trail in pursuit of a snail.

VO
“...taking no prisoners.”

Scene 5 Int. Annie’s Bathroom

Annie is in the bath, she has a flannel over her eyes. The shadow of a snail looms over her up the wall

VO
“And a reporter with a one way ticket...”

Scene 6 Ext. Side of skyscraper

Open on CU of Annie doing her scream. Pull back to see her standing on the shell of a snail which is climbing the building – a vertiginous drop visible below.

VO
“...to the top”

Scene 7 Ext. Cleetus’ car

Cleetus is driving with a dodgy back projected city visible through the rear window.

A huge snail splats off the windscreen as the car skids to a halt. The wipers clear a gap for Cleetus’ close up

Cleetus double take

POV through windscreen. Snails are coming at the car from everywhere.

End Title “Attack of the Killer Snails, coming to an allotment near you!”

@JurajMolcak - thanks man, your thread looks really promising too...

@axiomatic - great idea, kind of blows my schedule out of the water though!!! Who knows, if everything else goes smoothly (was that a pig flying past?!) I might incorporate something along those lines.

Thanks for taking the time to look...

Hey Duncs,

Great to see you're giving this one a shot. Hope you'll finish it in time.
About the character: He already looks great. Although for my taste, the hard edges in the face are just a tid bit too much. It suits an evil character, but maybe not this cop. Unless it's an evil cop. But hey, that's my take on it.

Cheers and good luck on it.

Duncs

Hey Nicco, thanks for the suggestions. I know what you mean, I was thinking of softening up some of his features - he's not meant to be evil, just disillusioned, bitter and knackered!! According to my (optimistic) schedule, I have till Sunday to finish up modelling this character so maybe I'll have time to go back and re-work the face a little.

Appreciate the comments and looking forward to seeing your modelling - it's always a treat!

Thanks for the encouragement guys - really appreciate you taking the time to look.

@Shuggie - I agree about the detail looking a little uniform on the shell. I want to re-use the basic shell for multiple snails so will probably make 3 or 4 variations with different details / colours etc. - perhaps an axe embedded in one of them!

Hi mate, there's quite a few ideas about snails and stuff kicking around! I didn't see your post till now but I've got a snail themed b-movie and there's another guy who's just posted a snail based entry too. Looks like there might be a new b-movie in there somewhere, war of the snails perhaps?! I'm just kidding but on a serious note I like your models your making great progress by the look of it.

Working on lighting and texture for the street scenes. I've been playing around with a combination of the Z-Depth pass and various effects to reduce apparent detail in the scene as an object gets further away - depth of detail rather than depth of field.

Hi Duncs,

Thanks for the advice you left me on my page. It's cool to get some feedback as I am a first year animation student. I appreciate the help of other artists like yourself with tons more experience.

Your environment is looking awesome. I checked out your steam punk vid. You've got a real style of modelling. It's very cool, a bit like the characters from Cloudy with a chance of meatballs, (one of my favourite films this year so far.)

Keep up the great work.

No updates here for a while - work has been mental and I'm seriously struggling to dedicate any time to this challenge now. Anyway, here's a quick peek at Cleetus' facial rig so far. There's no skinning yet, all morphs. The jaw movement will be handled by bones as will some squash and stretch functionality.

Thanks for checking in...

the expressions are looking great duncs, hope the morphs are working out simple for you.

i like the city street shots but think you might need some more detail at ground level to sell it ... cities work well like that ... add a couple of quick facades, some stalls, more poles and some overhead railings or signs and it will sell much more effectively i think :)

Hi Duncan,

I have a real basic question, your work is looking really good and your character face video is cool but how did you render out to flv? Are you using maya, because I can't find a way of batch rendering to any video format? I'm sorry if this is a dumb question but even if you have a link to a tutorial I would appreciate it.

Your work is looking great!

Thanks,

James

Duncs
02-25-2010, 06:52 PM
@ axiomatic - thanks man - totally agree about street level detail. I'm going to put it on the 'if I have time' list - should be about halfway down page 6 I reckon!!

@ jimmyjet - Thanks for the comment. I'm using after effects to render to flv - basically I export an avi preview from max, import into after effects and render to flv from there. As far as I know you can't render from max to flv out of the box. Hope that helps some.

This is really nice work mate. Facial expressions are amazing. Really cartoony.

The exterior is nice, but I think that lights need to be rotated. Couse your shadows are going in wrong direction. You have lens flare from the top of the building, but thats not the direction of the sun according to your shadows.

Keep up.

Duncs
02-26-2010, 09:03 AM
Cheers Boris.

Yeah the shadows are completely wrong at the moment. Was just trying to get a feel for the mood and atmosphere. Fear not, lighting will make sense in the end (if I ever get that far!!)
