recently i had a few problems with my pc because one of my ram sticks went bad. but until i found out what the source of the problem was, i thought it was my hard drive that went bad.( windows reported bad blocks on the HD ) and so i installed windows on a slower hard drive. ( one that i could use in a case of emergency.

anyway. now that im on the slower HD. ( its a fujitsu ata 66 i think and 5400rpm. ) and 512 megs less of ram.

well ive noticed that switching between apps is much slower now. where it used to be instant, now takes a few seconds to switch. and loading times are much longer.

not a large problem, but its a bit irritating to go down in performance when it wasnt an issue before :)

anyhoo, what im getting at is where i should spend my money on next ( other than the UPS )..

will a fast serial ATA 150 10,000prm raptor drive ( i dont care if its only 37 gigs ) make more difference between loading/switching apps than 512 more ram? or should i just go and get both :D

Ya,

Drive rpm has a big deal to do with latency...you'd be amazed how much faster an old PII300 is when you swap out the 5200 rpm drive for a newer WD400JB (Single High Density Platter, 8 meg cache, 7200 rpm).

Its absolutely rediculous the difference.

So ya a raptor would be even faster...but whether the % increase is worth the % price increase is debatable.

cool:) thanks.
just goes to show that a computer is as strong as its weakest part. ( well somewhat true :)
btw. whats with this high density platter?
