Latest Update: Final Image: B-Movie Makers From Another World
01-21-2010, 12:27 AM
Not only humans make B-movies... Here we see a team of Martians working on a Godzilla style horror flick where an un-convincing rubbery human beasty attacks a cardboard alien metropolis. They only have a budget of 23.7 blargon dollars so everything is going wrong and the director is not a happy chappy. The beasty is tangled in his own wires and is dangling helplessly in the background.
I?m happy with this concept, just need to start refining...

I like the character design want to see how this one turns out.

quick render of the director character

that's looking good, I like your idea for the challenge...
the character make me think a bit in monsters, inc, which I think is good, I specially like the eye... but I think that his front tentacle (the one at the bottom of the image) could be moved higher, it looks a bit too big or out of perspective to me...

That's a unique concept! Good luck with it

... the director is not a happy chappy. The beasty is tangled in his own wires and is dangling helplessly in the background.
Please tell me the Beasty's name is Bruce.

I love the idea... This would have made a good entry into the Strange Behavior challenge as well.

Concept for the alien wearing the rubbery human suit
01-24-2010, 07:18 PM
Brilliant! I adore the director and the cigar is the perfect touch there. I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this.
01-27-2010, 10:55 PM
getting the composition sorted now - the director character needs to face the camera more i think... and look even angrier!!!
01-29-2010, 01:20 AM
Starting to roughly add colour
01-29-2010, 01:38 AM
Really sweet concept. I like the style aiming at. The director is a kickass character!

a few adjustments made to the director character. It's starting to take shape now...

Refining Refining Refining Refining Refining Refining Refining

Just been working on the camera man in the foreground and the background of the set.
02-04-2010, 01:07 PM
After painting these characters for several weeks now, Iíve started to think about their back stories a bit more. So Iíve given them names and written briefly about each one:
The director is called Orsellian Squellch, an alien equivalent of Ed Wood. He writes, he directs, he acts and... he cross-dresses! During this production though, he mainly just gets angry because everything is going wrong... Itís tough being a B-movie director from another world!
The tiny actor in the rubbery human costume is Antandec Robrome. He has appeared in all 9087 of Orsellianís movies, mainly as the guy in the monster costume due to his small stature. This is his most challenging role so far Ė trying to squeeze his 6 tentacles into a costume with 4 limbs.
The Cameraman is Thargwin Tergurdoid. This is his first time working with Orsellian and itís been an eye opening experience so far. He has a strong background in making documentaries - his most recent being about the aliensí struggles with depth perception (as they have only one eye they keep walking into things and theyíre rubbish at sports)
The sound recordist is called Famwevvia Murtwai. Heís mute and deaf in 3 of his ears but that doesnít stop him from creating the unmistakable soundtracks that typify Orsellianís work. His most acclaimed work has been done on Orsellianís silent pictures.
Now i have to make this shine through in the painting... easy!!??

working on buildings in the set
02-09-2010, 11:54 PM
starting to add fine details
02-11-2010, 03:15 AM
I'm loving the details going into this. Just one suggestion: The overall image feels a little dark. I think you may be missing that feeling of ambient or bounce lighting, even on a controlled set there will be some ambient light. Just a suggestion. Keep it up! :)
02-11-2010, 09:33 AM
@ Quality... Thanks a lot for your suggestion, I agree it is too dark, but my method is to start dark and paint lighter tones over the top gradually. Iíll get there eventually! Iím not happy with the background as it is right now, itís looking a bit flat and the set is too small. After much deliberation I have decided to re-paint the entire background from scratch using a 3d model for reference. I want to get a more dramatic wide angle view maybe with Tim Burton style perspective, that should give the finished image the drama that seems to be missing right now.
Back to the Drawing board it is then....

work in progress
That is a very funny and original concept, cool idea. The martian characters are great, and the director is awesome, like the old fashion cloths on him, cool touch. :D
Great work and waiting for more updates, cheers!!

Now it's getting better and better.. I like the characters. They reminds me an old adventure game called Day of the Tentacle. Now the director is yelling for someone off the screen. You can think about adding new character to be director's yelling target. Cheers!

This is coming along great. I was also concerned about the darkness of the image when I first saw your earlier updates but I see it's coming along well. Rendering is great. Excellent concept!

more depth added with smoke and haze effects

This is getting better and better
I love the subtle deatils you're putting into this.

Getting close to the finished image
03-16-2010, 06:39 AM
AhAhah That's funny I like it ! The director looks great.
I think the lighting is a bit too strong now though.
Great work ! I want to see it finished ;)

In addition to beautiful, your work is super funny. Great idea!

Not only humans make B-movies...
Here we are on the set of the latest instalment of the â??Manzillaâ?? Franchise directed by the enigmatic
Orsellian Squellch, an alien equivalent of Ed Wood. He writes, he directs, he acts and... he cross-dresses! During this production though, he mainly just gets angry because everything is going wrong... Itâ??s tough being a B-movie director from another world!
The tiny actor in the rubbery human costume is Antandec Robrome. He has appeared in all 9087 of Orsellianâ??s movies, mainly as the guy in the monster costume due to his small stature. This is his most challenging role so far â?? trying to squeeze his 6 tentacles into a costume with 4 limbs.
The Cameraman is Thargwin Tergurdoid. This is his first time working with Orsellian and itâ??s been an eye opening experience so far. He has a strong background in making documentaries - his most recent being about the aliensâ?? struggles with depth perception (as they have only one eye they keep walking into things and theyâ??re rubbish at sports)
The sound recordist is called Famwevvia Murtwai. Heâ??s mute and deaf in 3 of his ears but that doesnâ??t stop him from creating the unmistakable soundtracks that typify Orsellianâ??s work. His most acclaimed work has been done on Orsellianâ??s silent pictures.
Thank you to all of you who have posted comments and offered encouragement throughout this competition. It really has been a labour of love for me and to be honest Iâ??m sick of looking at it!
I hope you all like the final image!!!
