Still working on the background and the name for my Monster Chicken Thing, I'm still wondering it he should be Radio-Active, Mutant, or Alien Chicken. So this Giant Chicken is mean eats people by grabbine them with it's long tongue and drags them into that huge beak.

Well here is a previsualization of my scene using basic geometry, I decided to change the angle of the camera in relation to the one I had in my initial concept.

The main SkyScraper will be based on the Empire State, and the blonde woman will be dressed in 1950's styling.

There will be debris falling from the claw points and some already on the ground.

Hi Guys,

Thank you all for your kind comments.

csmallfield: Thanks for more name ideas  , the main issue is actually choosing the name, i have loads of ideas in my head for names, it's really deciding on one I'm finding difficult :banghead:

Just to quickly clarify, the creature pearched on the building is still a Mutated Chicken (the main mutation being it's long tongue, loss of most of it's feathers and some deformities) :-) , I still have to concept it up, which I am looking forward to!

I just thought the main concept sketch I had, was a bit boring and has been done before, so my decision was to take the camera view from a persons perspective of the Chicken to show it's enormous scale. Plus I wanted to give the feeling that humans were like worms to the chicken, as it attacked them, giving the scene a feeling of fear and panic, with the Skyscraper and girl being a homage to the old B-Movies.

So still a Chicken :-)

This is my initial concept for the Chicken Mutation, It's lost most of it's feathers, except for tufts on it's shoulders, back, groin area and some on the thighs. It has the Lizard like tongue and a dark skin (a homage to King Kong in a way), although I will play with the colours abit maybe make it more chicken skin colour, but not sure.

Well, here we go, a proper start on the Prehistoric Mutant Chicken. Box Modelling it in 3DStudio Max 8 (inset is the image I am using as reference.

I just want to get the base details right (some way still to go) and then take it into ZBrush and hopefully have some fun.

I have also found a name for my b-movie: "The Chicken that Time Forgot"

Continued my work on the chicken this evening. Added some details, and his mutated tongue!!

I'm finding the wings a bit hard to know how it should fit, since it's hard to find any reference of chicken wings that aren't fried!

I will continue working in Max trying to get as much detail done to help for the sculpting stage in ZBrush.

I am still working on the story to go with the name of the B-movie, hopefully can find something decent.

Thank you for the nice comments and encouragement.

I haven't finished doing the base model of the chicken, will work on that over the weekend. But I have started work on the Police Choppers, and the Main Skyscraper, which is being based on the Empire State Building.

However since I like the proportion of the Skyscraper in my composition, I will not detail the building to be exactly the Empire State, but Suggest that it is.

Also I have decided to drop the concept idea I had for the chicken, and go for a more realistic chicken, but will still have the long tongue and maybe glowing eyes and some other more subtle details to make it that little bit more monstrous.

Anyway these ae just thoughts going through my head as I'm working through.

Here is the Chicken Base Mesh model finished, I still need to UV map it, but at least the model is done. I will be creating a few feather variations so that later on I can place them randomly on the body.

So what I will do next is take her into ZBrush and detail up the Head, Beak and Legs. Since the rest of the body will be covered in fur, I probably won't do much detailing of the body. I will also pose the chicken in ZBrush, so that I can tidy the mesh quicker and easier.

Also this weekend, I have been playing with the scene lighting in Modo, and abit more work on detailing the helicopter, which I will post later once I get it to a better standard.

Paperboy,

 Love the idea of the mutant chicken viewing humanity as worms. Very clever and charming. Also, since you mentioned fried chicken wings, perhaps you can make a spin on Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant chain (renamed, rebranded) somewhere in the background of your image. Just a small greasy diner that the mutant left an egg or . . . other substance on.

No. On second thought, that's just gross. Your image deserves better.

Awesome concept and progress.

Totaly cool concept, like the idea :D The composition works really well, that giant chiken is an authentic menace :D. Perhaps you can exagerate some chiken charecteristics ( like the tongue) for a more mutant look ( I dont know, dinosaur legs... ) Only a comment :)

SaphireS: It's great that you like my composition.

Russel-Nash: Thanks, I really hope I can make the piece like I envisage it.

ravioli_rancher: Thanks dude, funny you should mention about a KFC style boarding or something, it was an idea a friend put forward to me too.

anto-toni: Glad you like it. Yeah feathers, I was thinking of having a number of modelled feathers, which I will place on the chicken once it is posed, so that I can use them efficiently.

Ferx: Thanks for the comment and am really glad you like the idea. Once I get the chicken into ZBrush I will play around and see what works with mutations. Thanks for the ideas.

Well I have finished uv mapping the Chicken now, and also finished modeling
the taller of the back Skyscrapers and imported it into Modo, into the main scene from Max.

With the scene, I found a really nice image of a sky and the lighting of a building, which I am going to use as reference for my peice.

I also started work on the lighting, early days yet, but it's a start, I think the Ambient is a bit dark at the moment, and of course will swith some lights off and vary intensities of lights from the windows.

Ferx: Thanks for the encouragement and kind comments!

Well have finished modelling the Second Smaller Background skyscraper, and imported it into the modo scene.

I have played around with the lighting some more. I changed the colour of the sky a little, making it lighter and added some distance fogging too just to add to the sense of scale.

I also made some conceptual and scene changes, the main change is the removal of the ground plane, and the continuation of the buildings down and out of the scene, the main reason is to increase the sense of depth and drama, but also so gives a greater opportunity of uplighting the woman and chicken too, from police spotlights down from the ground.

This means the chicken is now carrying the woman slowly up the building rather than snatching her. So I will rotate the woman so she is more in a laid down position on his tongue.

The other change is I moved the helicopters around a little and the spotlights have been directed slightly differently.

Next will be to get the helicopters finished and in the scene, and get the chicken posed and in the scene in basic form.

Thanks guys for the kind words in your comments.

The last few days I didn't so much time to work on it, and also I have been struggling with a few elements. Animating the rotor blades, which i finally managed to do in Modo. The main issue was the pivot point/centre always seems to reset itself to the origin, anyway some how it works now.

I did some lighting work too, I changed the beams from the choppers to a more blue tone (I agreed with you Ferx ;)) I also added some Light pollution from the city below the skyscrapers, and I think this helps bring out the buildings from the scene more. The final bit of lighting is on the helicopters, just so they show up a bit better.

My 2nd issue has been posing the chicken, it's a tougher pose than I thought, and doing it in ZBrush has been a nightmare. So went back to the base mesh and split it into sections, and positioned them in the places as the template model, and will weld the mesh and fix issues.

So hopefully will get the pose finished this evening, and start sculpting and maybe even lighting the chicken.

Oh yes, Aven99: I decided to go for Chic Kong, because it works well with the K from Chick being the start of the Kong word :)

I have finally got the Chicken in it's main pose and finally the Low Poly Version is in the main scene!!!! I also did a first pass of lighting the chicken, and through finally getting her in, I can see isses to fix, like the wing covering the chopper, the beam of light form the distant chopper disappears behind.

Also one of the toes doesn't really work, so another to fix. I still need to open the beak up, which I will do in ZBrush, finally to give her some detail and clean up. I had to rotate the head already differentally to the origianl so you can an eye.

So more Chicken Work to come :)

PeterPuppet: Thanks :)

aradarena: Thanks too :)

Well, I have finally got the final pose and did some detail work, to get some muscle and fat structure to the chickens body, still a way to go. I don't want to detail the body too much, since I want to add feathers. So the higher res model is now in the scene as a test.

I also got the eyes textured, I need to work on the shader values to get a bit of gleaming.

Also I got the tongue positioned better.

So, I will try to do some more fixes, and hope to work on the tongue and feathers next, before continuing on with the body and texturing the chicken.

I've been working the past few days also in refining both what the feel and look and final poster should be like, and also what the background story is.

Today I have been mainly working on detailing the tongue of the chicken (although it's not in the scene yet).

STORY:
The year is 1923, in a small farm on the outskirts of New York City; a farmer by the name of George McClure goes about his business as usual.

A truck arrives at the farm, delivering a new batch of fertiliser, and George off loads 6 barrels, which he takes and deposits in the Chicken shed.

Unknown to George, the fertiliser contains a high percentage of Toxic and Radioactive material, used to encourage increased growth of crops, and one of the barrels had been damaged on transit and was leaking large amounts of the substance into one of the chicken pens feeding trays.

The helpless chicken living in the pen, hungrily kept on eating from its trough, and slowly a mutation was taking place. The Hen was growing larger and larger, and it?s feathers was slowly being shed, the Farmer freaked out not knowing what to do, he rushed out to get his axe to slaughter the Giant Chicken, by this time the Chicken had grown to be the size of the shed and had already devoured it?s Chicken friends.

As George ran back to the shed, the Chicken burst out of the shed destroying it, and using it?s newly acquired long tongue grabbed the Farmer and crushed him to death.

Soon, stories of this Giant Chicken spread like wild fire, and soon people wanted to see this Chic Kong as it was now called. A crazy business tycoon by the name of Eric Fudge decides that by capturing Chic Kong and bringing him to New York, he can get people to pay for the spectacle and make lots of money.

So he sets out with a team of hunters on an expedition to capture Chic Kong, which they manage to do after having a few team members squished, by using large canisters of sleeping gas fired in the vicinity of the Giant Chicken.

It is then taken on the back of a large trailer to New York, where it is chained up inside a Grand Theatre in Time Square.

The unveiling of Chic Kong was going to plan, until the curtains were opened and people started taking pictures. The Camera Flashes enraged the Chicken who with great effort broke the chains that fettered him and broke loose. The people panicked as Chic Kong?s tongue lashed out and it tore its way out of the theatre and onto the streets.

The military were called in to deal with this irregular situation. By the time they arrived on the scene Chic Kong had found itself a very attractive Blonde hostage, grabbing her off the streets with its tongue. It had also found a nice perch to which it could try and protect itself, The Empire State Building!!

Now choppers were brought in to take on this menace, and so Chic Kong placed his feminine hostage safely to one side, so that it could concentrate on its flying assailants. Unfortunately for it, the choppers were too many and the injuries it was sustaining from the guns was too much for its pimpled skin to take, and it succumbed to it?s injuries and fell all the way down from the top of the building to the ground, dead.

Hey Paperboy,

The poster style image works really well with your concept, and cool background story :D
Perhaps you can add some yellow color to the feet, the left foot is reciving light and that can show up the color of the foot. Maybe some rim light over the upper wing to separete it from the background sky and a traslucent crest to glow a bit on red and show up the crest form. Only silly ideas :D

Cool work and waiting for more updates. Cheers!!

Eskarina: Glad you like how the Poster is looking :)

Ferx: Thanks :), I completely agree with your comments, I haven't finished texturing the chicken yet, so hopefully all what you have mentioned will get into the image :)

Antropus: Thanks man!! I hope I can get the chicken finished to a polished state. Actually I hope I can get a female character done in time!!!

Emptyshell: Thanks dude!

Yakonusuke: Thanks, I'm curious about the finished chicken too :D. The Title is based on a King Kong poster I've seen, yeah theirs is 2D with depth, so may be you're right, so will give it a go later and see.

JUDZIGN: Thanks :)

Well since last posting I have detailed the tongue, textured it: Dif, Spec, Bump, did a little more lighting work to get a slight glint in the eye, and have modelled and textured a feather which I am tediously placing :P

So will try to finish feather placement, then texture and detail the chicken a bit more.

Pegahoul: Thanks!

Since I know I will be pushed to get a female character done from scratch, especially with lots to do on the chicken still, so I decided to get a female character model I did for my ZBrush Central Action Hero Competition entry and modify it to suit the scene.

When I created the mesh, I used ZSpheres, and retopologised once I was happy (I added some images of the initial creation). I have already removed all the elements from the chocolate girl and have cleaned up the mesh more.

I need to give her feet, and I will probably retopolise her again, since the hands are seperate elements at the moment, then pose her and get sculpting.

Still Chicken to do though!!!

Well I have been posing the female model. Originally I had her in a fainting pose, however I felt it might be better to have her fainted. So I think the pose is nearly there, so hopefully can start modelling and detailing.

I have also decided to have her in a nighty so she has been plucked out of a nearby Hotel Window as she was preparing for bed :)

Thanks rasamaya :)

Well I have been texturing the chicken. UVMaster is such a god send from Pixologic (Thanks guys!!!) So I tried it out and it worked amazingly, so created the diffuse texture in ZBrush.

I have now generated bump, spec and a subsurface colour, so will be testing it out in my scene, then work on the feathers again.

Well I have now transfered the textures to modo, I had to intensify the skin diffuse to notice the different tones. I think the Bump and the spec are working nicely, I have to get the tranluscent llok to the thing on top of the head.

I am at the moment getting the feathers in the scene to see how they look and work.

Since my last post, I have been working on the feathers.

I brought in the modelled brown feathers I was working on, and they looked really poor, it was very unnatural and didn't work at all :(, so in a way it was wasted time.

So next idea was to try out making feathers using Modo's Fur, so creating a Fur Density and Fur Length Maps I started playing around with the fur trying to make them more feathery.

Which finally I think I am close to. I think they are abit wide for feathers at the moment, but I like the feel of them, more of a crazy chicken look, that has shed feathers, and I liked the white colour to them too, since the brown was too dark.

I also think that the white colourto the feathers give it a more bleached look from the radiation and toxic chemicals.

So other from the a few tweaks to the feathers, I am going to stop with the chicken now, and concentrate on the female character.

davidramonilustracion: Thanks, glad you like the concept :).

So I have given my Damsel in distress some feet and did a bit of cleaning up at the joins, still work to do on detailing her, especially facial features.

I also have been working on her night gown, just the straps left, then I can sculpt some folding and seam details. I want one of the straps to be falling down her arm a bit.

So will continue with the gown and the woman.

Hey Papeboy,

Cool updates, like a lot the lighting and shading on Chic Kong , looks awesome. Perhaps on the top of building and the last part of chick cong body and wings you can add some fog to faint in the distance and gain more depth in the image (You can do that in photoshop when you finish the image, dont worry :D)
The damsel looks great, cool pose. Great work and looking forward for more updates. Cheers!!

Thanks Ferx, well about fogging ,well the building already has subtle fogging which I do not want to over do really, and as for the wings, since I am using a Vignette for the poster edge, I don't think it's necessary, but lets see :)

Poster: I repositioned some of the text, I changed the font for HELL and BIRD so it stands out more, added some highlighting to the eye, and I added a central crease on the poster.

I tried changing the title text to flat text in photoshop, but nothing really worked :( so I am staying with the 3D Title since it gels well with the scene, something which I always wanted.

Lighting: I moved the light on the face of the Chicken a little so that the intense light, causes half the chicken beak also to be in full light.

I added an extra point light at the belly of the creature.

Finally on lighting I widened the beam from the nearer chopper.

Chicken: I modified the feathers, I made the feet more yellow so they stand out, and I added some subtle Pimpling of the skin although that is not in the poster render yet, but added it on the side.

My main aim now is just the woman, hoping to get her night gown finished this evening and get the female base model in to see the Pose and positioning.

Worked on the Night Gown, and it is ready to take into modo to texture. It will have a silky Satin feel to it as the ZBrush image in away.

So hopefully get that done this evening, I will also increase the bump intensity on the Pimples and tongue of the chicken as I think they are a bot too subtle at the moment, and get the low res mesh of the woman also into modo to see how it works.

Finally got the base mesh of the woman in the main scene, and of course the night gown is in and textured. I have to fix the tongue abit, since it cuts through her arm at the moment.

The chicken is now done, I increased the bump on the tongue and skin a little.

Next I will fix the issue I mentioned, Finalise the Poster elements and get the woman and the hair done at the same time, so little time left!!!

Hey Paperboy,

Really great work, cool progress. :D Like a lot the dress and think the satin texture can work really well.

Think a bit translucent on the crest can work well ( perhaps not too much tan your previous test, but the translucent crest put a cool organic and flesh touch over that creepy chicken :D)

Perhaps you can try the woman on a position more near of the cam, more in perspective (foreshortened) with the chic kong head.

About colors, I like your version on sepia tones, put a cool old touch on the poster.

Great work and waiting for more updates! Cheers!!

whitemagus: I'm not sure why you are still confused with the rest of the image? I can understand the confusion at the start when it was very basic. Anyways glad you like the buildings.

Ferx: Thanks mate for the helpful comments :) The Crest bit I agree with but will be polish if I have time, as for the woman, I am going to rotate her so that her silhouette is a better one, but at this stage I don't really want to change my comp. Your final point dirty up the poster, well I was doing that anyway :)

So yeah I have been working on finalising the poster design, and here it is, added a border, changed the Hell and Bird text again, and also enlarged the whole writing, and added oldness to the poster.

So back to working on the girl.

I tought it was confusing because I didn't understant what was the monster, it looked like some weird alian (problably because the laptop was on low batery mode witch darkens the monitor) but now on this final image I've realised it is a giant chiken it looks great, a solid image in a few words!

The only thing I can suggest is a little bit more specular on the tung. To make it look slimier or you can have drools hanging from the tung.

That is if you have time :D

Well anyways with or without it it's looking great.

Good luck when you get this done. :)

Aven99: Thanks!! Yeah I agree, more spec on the tongue, will play around with that. Great idea about the drool, as you say that would be time dependent :P.

I was hoping to have finished modelling the woman this weekend, but had tonnes of other chores to do :(, I finally managed to retopologise her, which I needed to do to make sure I have enough res in the places I want, like the face, and to have the whole body as one mesh, rather than stuck on hands and feet. I also started working on her fainted facial expression.

Tomorrow I really have to clean up the mesh and get the details I want on, which will be nails, and the facial features complete. Will also work on the hair at the same time. Panicking a little now!!!

ohmagatsumi: Thanks for comment of encouragement!

Well I have cleaned up the female character, added the details I wanted, I didn't want to go to high detail, one I don't have the time, and from looking at most B-Movie posters, they aren't so into detail.

So I have also created the diffuse texture, painting her up in ZBrush, I still have to create the spec and sss texture for her, which I will do once I get her into Modo and the scene.

Again with the texture I wanted to get the feeling of skin, but not over detail it, as I wanted to give her a doll face look.

My aim is to get her into Modo and positioned they way I want, this evening and get the textures done, and do some lighting work on her, and do any other minor scene tweeks.

Then will concentrate on her hair

LOL, Korendo very true, chicken and Brocolli definately sounds like a good meal, and the size of them would probably stop world hunger :D

I have finally got the hair in and textured it, the detail is subtle though, so will probably polish the final thing of in photoshop. I rotated her abit more so that she fits in the scene.

I tried moving her around, more centrally in the scene but unfortunately it felt empty where she was, so returned her to the original position.

I also increased the lighting on her some more.

I also made a progression image for myself, to see how the scene developed from pre-viz to now, and thought would share it :)

Anyways, I will noe work on the final polish bits, for the Final Entry.

rattlesnake: Thanks for the kind words! I hope the final image will look good  , the main things I will photoshop is the hair, just add some details to make it more feel like flowing hair, I will also try out adding some saliva dripping from the tongue and see how that looks and feels with the final image.

ferx: Glad you like the pose :D , thanks for the many cool comments you have given me!! Yeah maybe you are right and the dress needs to flow abit more behind her, again if I do modify that, it probably will be in Photoshop.

whitemagus: Thank you for your kind comment, I'm hoping the final image will be better still, have to wait and see.

So since my last post I have set up the sss for the woman, tongue and chicken, so hoping it will look fine once the render has finished, I have also amended the final story a little bit to taking into account why the woman is in her Nighty :D .

So, and now I have set my computer off to rendering the hi-res image, unfortunately my computer crashed during my overnight render from Wednesday to Thursday (the first time my pc has ever crashed with Windows 7 on it, what were the chances!!!:argh: ) So can see why it's best to try to finish stuff earlier, to give you more time if things like this happen!!

So anyways I set it rendering again Thursday morning, and it's still rendering. Last time I looked it's been 25 hours :p , well I am rendering it all out at once (silly? maybe! I am feeling drained at the moment, and just want to get it rendered), and it's mainly the area lights and the volume lights going through the feathers, that has caused the long render time. So once it's finished will do some polish work and a few amendments to the poster and hopefully post the final entry.

So anyways, since this is my final post before the final entry post, I just wanted to thank everyone in the forum who viewed, commented, supported and encouraged me during this competition!! Thanks guys & gals! :D I also want to wish you all good luck in the competition, and look forward to seeing everyones amazing final entries!!!

Also want to give Special thanks to my wife, who put up with the Chicken for far too long :) , and my friends at Codies, for their Support and Encouragement.

The Hen was growing larger and larger, and its feathers were slowly being shed, the Farmer freaked out, not knowing what to do, he rushed out to get his axe to slaughter the Giant Chicken, by this time the Chicken had grown to be the size of the shed and had already devoured its Chicken friends.

As George ran back, the Chicken burst out of the shed destroying the structure, and using it?s newly acquired long tongue grabbed the Farmer and crushed him to death.

Soon, stories of this Giant Chicken spread like wild fire, and people wanted to see this Chic Kong as it was now called. A crazy business tycoon by the name of Eric Fudge decides that by capturing Chic Kong and bringing him to New York, he can get people to pay for the spectacle and make lots of money.

So he sets out with a team of hunters on an expedition to capture Chic Kong, which they manage to do using large canisters of sleeping gas fired in the vicinity of the Giant Chicken.

Chic Kong is then taken on the back of a large trailer to New York, where it is chained up inside a Theatre some where on Time Square.

The unveiling of Chic Kong was all going to plan, until the curtains were opened and people started taking pictures. The Camera Flashes enraged the Chicken who with great effort shattered the chains that fettered him and broke loose. The people panicked as Chic Kong?s tongue lashed out and it tore its way out of the theatre and onto the streets.

The military were called in to deal with this irregular situation. By the time they arrived on the scene Chic Kong had found itself a very attractive Blonde hostage, grabbing her using its tongue, whilst she was combing her hair unaware in her Hotel Room wearing nothing but her nightgown. It had also found a nice perch to which it could try and protect itself, The Empire State Building!!

Now choppers were brought in to take on this menace, and so Chic Kong placed his feminine hostage safely to one side, so that it could concentrate on its flying assailants. Unfortunately for it, the choppers were too many and the wounds it was sustaining from the guns was too much for its pimpled skin to take, and it succumbed to it?s injuries and fell all the way down from the top of the building to the ground, dead.

The End.
