very nice stylistic models. the large room render feels a little flat for colour though ... the models look so awesome it'd be nice if the lighting and textures lifted them a bit more?

Just a few references used in producing the various models, and for setting the stage for the kitchen. All of these images were pulled from Google image searches.
I have tried to reproduce the various objects to a certain degree of accuracy while still allowing for some license in the final product. I have limited myself to producing the textures either in photoshop or as procedural materials in Cinema 4D.

Russel-Nash: Thank you.

axiomatic and elmasfeo: Thank you for looking at my thread. I appreciate the C&C, please keep it coming. I have figured since conception of this project that the camera angle and lighting would be the most difficult aspect of the overall piece. I will be working on both as I continue to produce more models to fill out the scene.

Thanks again for the encouragement, and good luck to all who are participating!

There is a lot of work here, I love the idea of a raygun flashlight & all of your other props are looking great.

I know it's still a WIP but maybe play with rolling the camera to give more of a dramatic & unsettling feeling to the room.

Another poster mock-up. Playing with camera roll and item placement with-in the scene, also text placement across the poster. Need to really work on lighting the scene, I can already tell lighting is going to be most difficult. Still more model assets to be produced.

Hey David,

Nice concept for sure! Like the idea :D And absolutly fantastic models for the kitchen and props. Tou capture the 50īs on that kitchen, great!! Perhaps the tea package and design is a bit futuristic compared with the other elements on the kitchen, only a comment.

Great stuff. Waiting for more updates. Cheers!!

browndljr
02-22-2010, 01:10 PM
Thanks Ferx. The tea box is a attempt at an homage to a particular B-movie. You are correct though about it being futuristic in a 50's kitchen, the movie Soylent Green came out in 1973.
I am attempting to add various objects as a "tip of the hat" to different movies and/or genre through out the scene. The success of this is yet to be seen. :) Thanks again for visiting and taking the time to comment. All C&C is desired and welcome.

lol, I love the dish cleaner from the black lagoon! :D
those props are looking great, you have found good references and you are capturing them really well! ... also, the poster you posted was looking almost finished to me... are you planning adding some dirt to some objects? I think that those white doors could look good with some aging...

browndljr
02-23-2010, 07:49 PM
Thanks elmasfeo. You asked the question that I have been pondering myself. I think on one hand the obvious thing to do would be to dirty everything up, a legitimate reason for the stench. But then I think a pristine clean kitchen being the scene of a horrific stench (which makes no sense at all) would be more in the realm of B-movie un-believability. So the answer to your question is... I have no idea as of yet.

As for the poster looking almost finished, thanks for the encouragement. I have just a couple more models and some lighting and texture tweaks before I am where I had planned to be when finished- except for the dirty/not dirty thing.

Good luck on yours.

elmasfeo
02-23-2010, 07:58 PM
hehe, yes I see... you still plan to add that kind of dirty smoke as the stench? the one you had in one of your first posts... I liked it, and maybe with that you don't really need to dirty all your kitchen, and it will look more like something weird is going on, not just a regular stench, but THE stench, you know ;)

yakonusuke
02-23-2010, 11:04 PM
You got some pretty great props here, browndljr! The poster looks very good as well, but I think it would be better to add dirt to the sink area or so, what would support the story , so everyone gets faster what it's all about. It took me some time to figure out what's happend, 'cause the centre of interest isn't very clear. Everywhere are hints, stuff to look at , text, spots... so you got drawn from one point to another and get distracted. Just my impression, maybe it helps!

Cheers!

browndljr
03-04-2010, 11:51 AM
Thanks elmasfeo. I may need to tweak the lighting some in ragards to the ray gun, because it is actually on the floor with the handle leaned against the leg of the chair. I am in the process of adding some emitters to produce some "stench" gas to come from beneath the stove and fridge, and more filth around the sink. So the lighting tweak will probably be the very last thing. Thanks for the comments, they are appreciated very much!

Hi all.

Well, I think I am pretty much at the end of the piece and since this is my first challenge, I am unsure of how to proceed. I saw this in the instructions. Information about the final file submission will be emailed to all contestants in the last month of the Challenge. But I have received no such email.

Can anyone offer any advice?

Thanks to all who followed my thread and especially those that commented, I feel I have learned a great deal during this process, and had a lot of fun too. I would like to wish everyone "good luck" in the challenge.

1950's kitchen, Somewhere USA . . . something has gone terribly wrong. A mind blowingly evil stench is coming from beneath the fridge, the stove and the sink!
