Hey Ladies and Gents,

Alright, so here's what I'm doing...it's a little out there so bare with me. I was originally going to create the 'King Conan' movie, but found that it was a bit boring. So, I thought it would be fun to have Conan and Ash (Bruce Campbell) fighting back to back, fending off an army of classic B-Grade villains...what these villains are after, is something they can never get...

So, this is my first go at Conan's physique. As you can see, I'm sticking with the original Conan - Arnold Swartzeneger...who is awesome and hilarious at the same time! I'd like to make him look quite a bit older, and beaten up. He'll have more wrinkles, maybe a beard, cuts and scratches, and some killer muscles. My next step will be designing some rocking armor! Very exciting...

Hey guys,

Just realized that Conan may not be B-grade enough. If a few of you can let me know what you think, that would be great. Luckily, I'm not too far into it yet...

Cheers

I love the film Conan..especially the first one Barbarian. Would love to see how you create this topic in B-movie form.

This is my first concept. Am trying to make the theme more B-grade, and a bit more then the typical hack and slash film most sword fantasy films are. With keeping with the theme though, I thought it would be fun to have Conan fighting his way out of a swarmed by B-grade villains.

I have no idea if I'm on the right track with this Challenge! I'm having fun anyway...

Good direction you are heading..it's looking like a very epic B-movie though....Will keep watch on this cool entry.

Here's my second attempt. I'm focusing more on Conan this time, as I would prefer to put some high realism detail on his face/body. I'd like to illustrate that hilarious face Arnie makes when he screams or yells, he gets those crazy eyes..it's just hilarious.

Have more idea's coming...will keep them flowing.

Am still not 100% on this idea of Conan against B-grade villains...

Hey Guys,

New update, reworked the 50 Foot Woman in the background; a lot of people apparently didn't know what that was! Also, that is an Oscar Award in Conan's hand...in case that wasn't clear as well!

I'm really liking this concept so far, am looking forward to bringing Arnie and Bruce to life...

Also, that is an Oscar Award in Conan's hand

hey, that could be wielded as an onehanded mace! :wip:
a barbarian smashing his enemies heads with an oscar...

looks overall very interesting, but i think, the huge woman is more eyecatching than arnie and bruce are. perhaps move her a bit out from the lightsources?

This is a really sweet conglomurate. Your study of Arnold (a little higher up) is great. I find it awesome, too, to see pennywise in the scene.

Alright, so new update...

- added a few more villains
- added a few inches on the bottom, as I would like to have some bodies around Conan and Ash's feet. Kinda like the Frank Frazetta reference I posted.
- I'm going to push back the 50-foot woman like suggested, and hopefully have this concept done soon.

Have reworked some of the image, trying to optimize the flow of the illustration, leading the eye here and there. Will add some more into the foreground, so that the robot doesn't take up the whole focus.

I like the idea of having no gore in this, as I know art directors don't like to see gore in illustration. So, I thought it would work having Ash shooting a robot instead...I'm not sure if that robot is particularly evil in it's movie...but it'll do for now!

Am have a LOT of fun adding in the villains...

Alright, so a few changes today.

- Added in more villains
- pushed 50 ft woman further into the background
- reworked Conan's face...just a placeholder for now, until I design his battle-face

One thing I'm not too keen on, is having a villain on both corners at the bottom, makes it a bit too symmetrical. So, I'm gonna add a bit to the left side, and maybe bring the Blob over to the right a bit.

Hello all,

So, I've gone into WIP mode now. So far, I've been polishing Conan and Ash, and it has been difficult! Conan's face I would say has been the main challenge...and I will probably keep tweaking it until the deadline of this challenge. I'm happy with the way they look now, and will move onto polishing more of the foreground monsters... hopefully get some nice textures on them.

But, I think all-in-all its going the direction I want.

just some more refining...

GlennEBrooks, thanks for your comment. I'm actually working in black and white, then overlaying the colour. I start with a rather dark blank screen, then scribble in the highlights with white and grays. Then throw on a overlay layer to work out how I want the colors...

Not sure if this is the best method, but lets me blend and detail much faster in B&W.

Looking great so far! I especially love the expression on the barbarian's face: It reminds me - in a good way! - of Schwartzenegger in a totally different film, Total Recall, in the scene where he's exposed to the surface of Mars and his eyes bug out. Anyhow, it made me laugh.

Hey Guys,

For no apparent reason, I felt like adding a movie title into my illustration. I'm not 100% sure what I feel about it, I know I've made the type setting more 'modern' then what a B-Grade film would look like...to me, I feel more drawn into this look. I'm also not sure whether to make it a 'coming soon' poster, as it is now, or 'released' poster, with quoted reviews (joke reviews) etc. Or maybe getting rid of the Type all together!

Any suggestions would be a big helpful...

Cheers!

I really like it - so much to discover! You even put Robby the Robot in there.

Cool image. I like Arnies face expression most...its totally Arnie (and reminded me of the crazy japanese tv ads he made).

With the villians all around: Some are missing and some i dont know.

Whos for example the purple cloaked monster on the front left?
And who is the one with the smoking and the cylinder? Looks like Penguin meet Dracula to me.
And the last one: The big head right under Arnolds armpit...

The missing ones (although i know you wont get them all on the picture):
Jason with the ice hockey mask
Freddy Kruger with hat and claw
Michael Myers with the white face
Norman Bates dressed as Grandma
A Mummy
Chucky
Reanimator wit a radioactive syringe

The 50 foot woman reminds me of another picture made by Steven Stahlberg called "Psycho Girlfriend". i think its the pose, where you can see her giant panties... *g

What have you planned to put in the sky? How about some News helicopters or some bats/vultures/killer bees?

Oh,and one other thing. When i look at the blasted robot front right, i see a white "O". Looks like a forgotten letter to me, but i think i am wrong. :D

Anyway, great work. Love it and i love how it all comes together.

JayMackay
02-11-2010, 04:58 PM
Hey TX-Snakebyte, thanks for your suggestions!

The purple cloaked monster in the front, is a man consumed by The Blob...guess I need to work on him a bit more! :D

The guy shooting the shotgun is Ash, from 'Army of Darkness'...Bruce Campbell is his real name. This guy is the king of B-grade...

The big headed guy under Arnie's armpit is Stupid, from 'Earnest Scared Stupid' I wasn't sure if he was b-grade enough to make it into this pic...but I put him in there anyway...

I haven't decided what to do with the sky yet. I was thinking the flying monkey's from 'Wizzard of Ozz', but it's not really a b-grade movie...and may have also won an Oscar. The Bee's idea is good, i was originally thinking Birds as well...from the horror flick 'Birds'.

Thanks for the villain suggestions. I'm having a difficult time finding the line between old classic movies, and cheap B-grade films. To me, Conan and the Evil Dead series are fully B-grade. I see movies like 'attack of the 50 foot woman' and 'King Kong', as horror movie classics (I think they were top quality back in the day). So, I've had a hard time deciding whether characters like Jason, Freddie, Mike Myers, etc are b-grade enough...or are they just old classic horror villains. My main concern is being torn apart real movie enthusiasts; I envision most people seeing this image and taring it apart with their opinion of who's b-grade and who's not...So, that's where I'm stuck. :)

If anyone thinks I'm being to anal about this, let me know! As I don't want to be booted from the contest because this isn't true B-grade...

The purple cloaked monster in the front, is a man consumed by The Blob...guess I need to work on him a bit more! :D

Now i see, The Blob. :D
Perhaps you could make him more transparent, so you can see the victim contours inside.

The guy shooting the shotgun is Ash, from 'Army of Darkness'...Bruce Campbell is his real name. This guy is the king of B-grade...

Ash was clear for me. I asked for the Penguin guy with the hat and the smoking.

The big headed guy under Arnie's armpit is Stupid, from 'Earnest Scared Stupid' I wasn't sure if he was b-grade enough to make it into this pic...but I put him in there anyway...

I dont know the movie, but this could be just me. ;)

The Bee's idea is good, i was originally thinking Birds as well...from the horror flick 'Birds'.

Yeah birds with demonic eyes. :D
And maybe a 60s Ufo trying to beam Arnie or the Oscar up. ;)

I envision most people seeing this image and taring it apart with their opinion of who's b-grade and who's not...So, that's where I'm stuck. :)

Yeah, its like a little riddle pic. Who is hidden on this pic and name them all. :)
But thats a plus for me. :)

Regardless of each character, there's something B-grade about gathering a bunch of celebrities and weird movie types into one big plot vehicle. As far as being anal, I think most of us obsess about our art at some time or other - it's expected.

Alright, so need some advice on the sky. Whether I keep it orange, blue or green. I think the blue helps balance the image a bit, but the orange makes it much more moody...what do you think?

Alright, another big change in the image...

I felt like the fire/orange theme was too over bearing. I wanted Arnie and Bruce to stand out more, and they just blend in with the orange background...so not good.

So, I changed the BG to green, which makes it more eerie/horror like. I liked one of my original ideas of using a torch as the main light source, as I can pay with the lighting on the faces of the Villains. which I think works...

archaeotect
02-12-2010, 03:51 PM
I think you're right - the green sky works best!
I understand that the torch has advantages as a light source - but Conan without a sword? Isn't that a bit like Ash with neither a shotgun nor a chainsaw?
Anyway, your image is turning out great!

DustyGhost

WOW! You got loads going on here!

I hope the final image is nice an big so we can try and figure out who they all are!
Actually you could run a mini contest to just for fun! :)

archaeotect: Hehe, yeah I know...Conan without a sword is a sad day...I can hear the angels crying! I haven't had any brilliant ideas of how to get that warm light source on that side. I thought maybe some villains could hold torches...but am more wanting the warmth around Arnie and Ash...

DustyGhost: Yeah, a lot of replies I've had was about enjoying looking through all the villains! My worry is that I've just made a busy mess of the illustration...and it doesn't have that simplicity that the Judges may want more of. I think with turning the background green, and having the 2 light sources (gun and torch) that will help simplify it down quite a bit...but we may loose some visuals on the background Villains! Boooo!

Hey Guys,

This will be my last update for the week. I thought of adding the War of the Worlds tripods into the distant background...I thought that would be a nice touch if you could see them way out there, not as visible as the Woman.

Let me know what you think. I'm really conscience about over busying this concept!

This is a never ending saga...

Have done another colour exploration, as I found the green to also be a bit too distracting. I've made the background blue, and now Conan/Ash stand out nicely. I'd like to build up the lighting on the faces of the Villians in the foreground...I think this lighting will make for a more interesting piece.

Any suggestions are welcome!

Alright, so I said screw the Blue background, the green is more interesting and the characters pop out just fine.

Done some fine tuning to some of the foreground characters...

General refinements, and added the Tv from Poltergeist. I thought it would add a bit of silliness having the Tv smashed amongst the pile of bodies. Also, thought it would add some more interesting lighting having using the Tv as an additional light source...still a WIP.

hello!
Whoa so many details! This is so much fun finding all classis horror characters from the past like the clown from the it movie for instant :). the color looks nice. You can play around a bit with light and dark. For example try darken the area around the 2 heroes (making visible 2 main characters and other monsters hiding in the gradient dark )and watch how it looks. Maybe it'll hide a little bit of details but could do interesting result of course if it doesn't work leave it. Cheers

This is looking really great: You've put an amazing amount of detail into this! :D I have no major comments, just little picky ones... but it looks like that's the stage you're in - finishing up small details - so I'll share them:

In a sea of cool-colored, mostly greenish enemies, the blob now really sticks out because he's such a different color. I would suggest splitting the difference between the new color and the old one (more green) so that he doesn't stick out so much among all those bad guys.

It seems odd that with so much perspective in the image, the Oscar (and Arnold's hand) are seen perfectly from edge on. It would be a bit more integrated into the scene and seem a little less fake if you turned them just a bit, so we saw a hint more of the bottom of the Oscar.

There are some parts on the outside of Arnold's arms where ho sort of blends into the limbs of the giant woman behind him. You could try darkening up those parts of the woman a tad just to make him pop more.

Conversely, I think a little more tim light on Ash's head and chainsaw body might help him to stick out from the background.

It's unclear why they're off-center, compositionally, why Bruce is shoved over to the side (aside form the Obvious reason that Arnold commands a bigger salary! :) ) Once you're going for a poster look, maybe a tag line or small column of text on the left side (ie. over her right knee) might help it look more like a poster and balance out the image more.

Anyhow, hope you don't mind the nit-picks... all small details, but overall, you've done a super job. Good luck!

Cheers Walrus for putting in the time to critique...nice to get some constructive criticisms! I can see your points and will make those changes soon.

I think with the Oscar, I wasn't sure it would be recognizable to the viewer if it was turned at more of an angle. I do know what you're saying though about the dead-on view (including the hand) as that buggs me as well. I'll give it a try at a bit of an angle...

Thanks again!

I wasn't sure it would be recognizable to the viewer if it was turned at more of an angle.

I wasn't thinking an extreme angle. It can be subtle - even 5 degrees off would make it feel more 3D yet still let it keep pretty much the same silhouette.

JayMacKay,
This is so cool-great idea and rendering. I deffinatially think you should put the muzzle blast back on the shotgun like on page 6-just me though. Also, there is something kinda funky about Arnolds, left uper leg muscles where they meet his hips kinda? Aside from that this is really great--and alot of work-congrats. Good luck.

Alright, so the biggest change in the illustration is that I've darkened the background monsters so they're a little more silhouetted against the green fog behind them. I also darkened the foreground monsters to frame Conan and Ash...

I'm still not 100% sure I like the 'War of the Worlds' Aliens shooting lasers at the Oscar...any thoughts?
