View Full Version : Enchanted Forest - Environment/Character - iC4-
ok, my first challenge but i will give my best :)
I will try to make the forest with paint effects and to make it more interesting I will throw some creatures in it :D
I have a sketch but it's better if you don't see it :D :D

Well, good luck. Got nothing to comment on but i just say "looking good" to get you started ;)
I'm sure the sketch won't kill us :) ...after all, its good for you due receiving comment that you can use to improve yourself ;)
hehe you must be really bored :)
ok I have started a creature which will fly in my enchanted forest and I think it will be the "main creature", but I will throw some other animals in the background :D

Yowza! You just reminded me of an old sketch I did of a mechanical dragon fly...I always meant to model it, but never got around to it! And you have already taken the idea! :argh:
Anyway, Great start! Looking forward to seeing the progress!
thx :)
here is an other animal which will be in the background......I really wonder myself what it should be, but i found it on the sketch so I modeled it :D:D
I don't need much details.....cause it's just in the background...
i have started with my environment......since I don't have the time to model all leaves i will use mayas paint effects
but I will model the "main trees" so this is only a start

hmmm, here is a little test render

your image is so dark that it is really hard for me to see what's in the botom of the image. It stays with guessing
hm really? on my monitor it isn't really dark.....but I will change this

I already checked my monitor and the brightnes and contrasts are both 100%?
ind awerad maybe a bad monitor. I'm at collage at the moment, so

maybe there is a little problem with proportion, need some human size reference ,if you no what i mean.
human size reference?? :hmm:
anybody else can say if it is too dark or not?

It is kinda dark.. Actually, it looks kinda like a shadow from something big is falling over the scene.. I can still see the grass on the ground, but the ground is pretty dark.
Darn.. I wish I had Maya to use paint effects for leaves... I've been trying to think about how I'm going to do the leaves in my entry..
thx lord twilight......now if two say it's too dark I really have to change it :bounce:

hi iC4,
i'm sorry but i have to be honest.
Its more like a jungle picture to me, then a 'enchanted forrest'.
Also, i'm not too fond of paint effects, but maybe thats just me:shrug:
I also think the darker one is better. are you also going to add some other plants (not paint fx ones)
yes I allready said that I will replace the trees with "real" models
and I also allready said that I'm also not really happy with the environment, I'm allready working on an other version which is more magical and forest like :bounce:
but thx for the critics :)
ok here is the next little test render........and yes I know the textures and uvs aren't right
I plan to add more half animal and half machine creatures, and will add more details to the one i allready have
than i will add more trees and add some more details to the trees
hm, now it's time to do these things :bounce:

BIG improovement with the foliage in that last render. I have a quick question: For the helicopter blades on your dragonflies, are you going to animate them spining real fast and apply motion blur to them or are you going to stick with the transparent instances?

The problem with using paint effects is the output is too clean and artificial....not a single dead leaf...try creating your own shrubs and plants or create some custom paint effect brushes

I agree. You can do beutiful realistic work with Maya's brushes, but you need to do a lot of tweaking with them. There are soooo many things you can adjust and tweak it's really amazing.
sure there will be motion blur
to paint effects: I think it's great for smaller things like grass or small plants especially for plants with much leaves, but for trees it isn't really good because you can't texture
Here is my new idea which will be the main "character", it's just a start but I think you can recognize what it should be :)
will change alot, especially the armor
also the body needs alot more details
sooooooo, i've added a crashed spaceship....i will add some grass on the ship that it looks like it is crashed a long time ago
still have to fix the uvs of the trees..........:bounce:

:surprised
That looks really.... strange. But pretty cool too :p
I think that yellow armour thing looks a bit out of place though. Maybe make it a more foresty colour, to blend with the environment a bit? Like camoflage? Oh wait, I see you are going to add grass.... cool
You really need to sort out those planar lines in your UVs :hmm:
yes I will make it a bit camouflage with some grass and moss on it, I will also add some leaves and litle branches (is this word right?!?!) on the "robots" so that it looks like they are camouflaged
and yes I know the trees really hurt but first I wanna model my things, I will fix that when i begin to texture...or maybe earlier

Hey that's looking better
The grass is very cool :applause:
The wreckage also looks better with those colours :) One thing you should consider adding is some damage on the trees from the crash - like old scorch marks or something...
thx rattfink, allready fixed it
thx leigh, good idea will see what i can do
