I have chosen to recreate my favorite b-movie cult classic of all time "Frankenstein" starring Boris Karloff. It will be in black and white and all cg. Most likely I will re-create the 1931 trailer. I am now coordinating a 89 day schedule and will be posting up a storyboard by Friday. I have attached a image of inspiration and will use the original movie for ideas. Good luck to all. I look forward to seeing what my competitors will bring and I invite all comments and constructive criticism.

Frankenstein is a great character and choice for this, however I would make a suggestion to try and take the concept and put your own twist on it somehow. Try to tell the Frankenstein story without just doing a re-creation. Just a thought. Either way looking forward to seeing him "come to life!"

I agree, I am looking at a trailer and grabbing the money shots and visualizing what I would do better and what I would do different. The cool thing that there was no CG in 1931, so I got a advantage.The storyboard will be fun! stay tuned. Thanks grantmoore 3d stop by again later. I will be posting character sheets for the Doctor. So after putting more thought into it. My own twist to the Frankenstein classic is:
Its is 1931 no humans exist, the world is ran by robots. The robotic Mad Scientist is in search for the human soul. In his search he puts together a human with dead body parts dug up from old graves. IT'S ALIVE!, Frankenstein is born, but no soul is visible. He escapes the Lab and goes on a killing frenzy. The scene with the robot little girl will bring out Franky's human qualities and emotions. I will be working on a trailer and want to stay true to the look and feel of 1931. Robots will look classic, which will cut my production time. I am debating on adding the angry robotic mob at the end. I have pushed my storyboard deadline to next week. Next few days will be char sheets and design, look dev.

This is a wip of the Mad Doctor Model. There was no design. I just winged it, which I do not recommend.

Although you might try and make the glass head have a little more of an interesting simplified-human-head-shape. At the moment it just doesn't feel right.

Thanks, I see what you mean. I was going for the Robby the Robot and Metropolis look. That's why I usually design on paper first and solve these issues in my pre-viz, but in this case Time is of the essence. I only set aside Four days for this char. I will post an update later.

So I took a closer look at the Docs head and decided to change it from less Robby the Robot style to more Metropolis. I got one more day for this particular model before I move on to Igor.

Very good progress.. Somehow I prefer the brain in the tube to the more robotic one. But both cold serve well as a B-movie character.

I also really liked the Brain in the tube it looked Cheesy which is what B-movie represents in some ways. I will make the final decision later. The robotic head has glass piece's that display his brains. What do you think about the see through Garment, like a butcher Apron? I plan on putting some blood spatters on it, only I did'nt want it to cover all the hard work I put into the robots guts. I love your work by the way.

This is just a WIP of Frankenstein s head. I got the whole body modeled but it is not very appealing right now. I will post a progress in two days.

So this is a update on the star of the show. A WIP but getting the results I am looking for. I will work on some spec, diff and bmp maps tommorow.

looks great so far, and a lot of progress too!
something about frankies eye lids is bugging me a little but the over-all feel of the head is wonderful, keep it up! :D

Thanks Axiomatic, lots of long nights but I am having fun. Eyelids are bugging me too, I am editing the displacement map in photoshop. Should look better later. Also thanks Jabadan, fgdf and others for stopping by your comments fuel me. I will look forward to your work.

I like your ideas. I like your first mad scientist the best. Why not make it wacky? Put his brain in his chest or make him carry his brain around. Give him 3 brains. On that note I wish you'd put your own flavor on frankenstein. It'd be fun to see what you could come up with.

You have inspired me. I will come up with something. Good thing I began this challenge early and of course I am a freelancer so I am at home all day. I can invest time into something "larger than Life". Come by later and check for some changes.

Since I began I felt as if my entry was not really meeting the requirements of the challenge. So after reading some of you guys comments I went back to the drawing board and decided to merge my style with a more playful one and create something really cool. For now here is a Franky update. The Mad Doc will look alot better tomorrow.

I'm changing the whole look. Mad Doc in his new body. I will work the textures later. I will rig and play with some poses first- after I post franky in his changes.

So I grabbed a few Mental Ray Shaders and began to work on the Doc. Gotta move on to Franky.
nice Marlon, i like the stylized changes to the franky head and the mad doctor, now they're looking more like B-movie actors for a B-movie, keep going man

Rigging the amputating Mechanic arm proved to be the most challenging task up to this point. I can't wait to see whats behind curtain number two. Franky will make an appearance shortly,grab your popcorn.

Mad doc looks super. I like very much robo hand. Nice. Did you use script fos rigg connector between arm and forearm ?

Thanks Staszek, It was very tricky. I grouped the arm pieces and hydrolic pumps into 3 parts, Arm1, Arm2 and Shoulder. Locators were parented to groups and aim constraint. Then main Hydrolic pumps were parent constraint to locators. After wards arm groups were parented to joints. Mechanical arm is FK. In a nutshell, took me all day just to figure it out. I felt like the Doctor himeself saying "HES ALIVE!" boy it was tough, I'm not much of a rigger but am a generalist, so it helps. I will post a video later on how it works.

This is Frank_E skinning WIP.On another note- Can somebody help me get some video up? I followed instructions, got Java and FLV encoder. Still when I try to upload video it says attaching but takes too long. HELP!

Maybe foldings on chest would need some more work.
About video. Riva encoder works fine. Check out bit rate. If value is higher than lets say 5000 than file can works slow. If its not this probably something with uploader . Im going to try challenge uploader now with some test.
I just tested and challenge uploader works fine.

Thanks buddy, you know there is folds on the chest but it is not visible because it is really dark. Just like the staples on his head I will mask it out at render time and bring those details out. Thanks for the uploading advice I will give it a try again tomorrow, been up all night obsessed with this project. Hey man I can't say enough about your thread and your work. I got into some shader dev. used MIA and SSS shaders to achieve a better feel to the doc.

My animatic for Frankenstein. It is 30 sec so I left out alot of stuff. This is locked and I will go by this animatic. Changes might come but not likely.

Hey all I noticed I spelled Millions wrong, I will fix it for the final. I have been going around the clock on this challenge, getting tired.
Ok, after reading the deliverable's. This 30 sec pre-visual trailer will be for the initial judging. I will post a full length animatic later. I will finish up with the characters and assets first.

So I improved the skinning got into some corrective blend shapes specially around the shoulders and arm pits always a issue. and swapped the blinns for some sss shaders. I will post a animation test over the weekend.
