What would be the best way to create a wave of colour sweeping across stationary particles?

I tried using an object as a deflector moving through the particles, using a collision test to change the particles colour but this gives me very erratic results. Anyone know a better, simpler way?

depending on what max you have running you can try the mapping object operator what comes with the particle flow toolbox #1 (included in max2009+2010). Mapping object essentially allows you to map animated mapping coordinates on your particles. so you would use a simple plane or so with animated uv mapping/colors and then spawn particles on that plane using the mapping object operator to inherit the shading/mapping.

i have a tutorial about mapping a movie on particles if that helps you any further but i would go with the mapping object approach and read the help about it.

here's my tutorial:

how do you manage to take the animated uv map from another object and appy it to the collection of particles via the mapping operator? i cant see an option for this? thanks

you should use the Mapping Object Operator, not Mapping Operator. read the help about both operators i suggest.

sorry, my bad.

But although i have chosen the reference object and i think i've checked the correct options - and applied the correct material(a blend material with a gradient map as the mask), i still dont seem to be able to animate the sweep (via the uv gizmo on teh reference object) of colour across the particles?

i attached a demo file(max2010) that has the mapping object working.
