Searched the forums and didn't see anything that really answeree my qiestions.

1. Is it reasonably easy to rig an ik/fk setup without a lot of scripting in Max5?

2.Can you simply create an ik/fk scenario by enabling and disabling the ik in the motion panel and animating that?

3. Anyone know of any tutorials illustrating ik/fk blending.

I would like to be able to animate fk style when walking or whenever the characters arms do not need to track or stick to something else. would be nice for the feet also when they come off the ground, but not as important as the arms.

Thanks

Well, while my specific knowledge of the details of rigging are not that great, I can tell you that the answer to all three questions is yes.

The best and easist solution I know of is to get Charrigger from Michael Comet's web site (http://www.comet-cartoons.com/). He is a dead set legend and at a push of a max scripted button, you will have a pretty full rig with both ik and fk controls. Which I guess leads one to the ability of pulling it all apart and working out how he did it. If you are so inclinded.

1. You can set up a fk-ik rig relatively easy without scripting. I think there are several tutorials out there describing a 3 arm system. Basically you have one ik arm, one fk arm, and another arm that blends between them. The first two will be the arms you animate. This can be set up with constraints, expressions, and scripted controllers.

2. Yes, but it is a on/off control. No blending. =L

3. Search on Highend3d for fk/ik blending. I think there is a tutorial there for Maya, but you can easily relate it to Max.

I found that the extra animation I had to do to make sure the blends were what I wanted, was not worth it. That and the large performance hit when you make the rig pretty complex.

GO VOLS!! :)
