Here's my first and main idea for the moment... the idea is to show at the foreground a dying monster, a poor monster you will feel pity for, with a heavy painful wound... then in the middleground we see the 'hero' who has just shot the monster, protecting the typical lady in distress... and not realizing that in the far background, behind them, appears the silouette of a much bigger and angry monster, maybe looking for revenge...

Behold!...
Evil Zombie Baboons VS Super Ninjas from the future !!!
The battle will be epic, will the human race survive to see its outcome?

...just a secondary idea though, I still prefer the other one for the moment... either in this concept or the previous one I may try to play with rain effect, I've never done an image with rain and it could look good...

thanks for your comments guys! :)

I'm not having much free time for this, but here's something else I thought today... probably not very original, I don't know..

The attack of the woman with an bag full of oranges!!!
...or...
The attack of the 50ft cleaning lady!!!

I still don't know which concept of all posted here I'll follow, maybe the first one, any opinions?

crazy3dman - :) nice to see you around too!

Darksuit - thanks for posting, I'll try not to dissapoint you ;P

Rols - yeah, hehe, I saw it later, we had almost exactly the same idea, and almost with the same words, which is difficult! but I wont follow that one, I'll check yours to see how it goes :)

gpepper - hehe, yes, I seem to be having the same ideas as other people, so I'll probably follow withmy first concept, which is the only one so far that doen't look too much like what someone else is already doing.... and which is the one that I most like yet

Yakonosuke - hey, nice to see you again, and glad that you like the idea, but gpepper was doing something similar and I'm not that much in love with that concept, plus I'm too lazy to draw a whole city, hehe...

So for the moment the winner concept is still the first one, tomorrow I'll try to do some more detailed sketches...

Sorry for the lack od updates, I've been sick for some days, and just after that I went on some short holidays... I'm not happy yet with any of my current concepts, but I think I should start focusing on one of them and moving on... here's something else I thought the other day, it's called "The zombie farm and the princess from Mars" ...and I obviously need some references for shotguns and how to hold them :P, although I thought later that maybe I could change it for a steak or something weirder...

hi there!
I liked the preview version of the scene but this one is cool too. More dynamic with interesting distorted perspective. I think that adding the rain you have achived very nice mood. Plus blood from bulls mouths add twisted scary atmospheric touch. You can think now about a background to add even more twist. For example a church or wild west style saloon. The color paletty are nice too. Maybe the astronaut's suit for a girl don't appeal to me so much. Preview one with hat was very cool I think. Ok so stay alive and keep fighting. Cheers!

I've been thinking that having a mix of zombie-ghost farm animals plus one cleaning lady doesn't make much sense, so here is what it would look like if the protagonists were being attacked by a larger amount of scary housewives...

So, what do you think? zombie animals? they look more scary and it makes more sense... cleaning ladies? it's funnier and perhaps more original... or a mix of them? (like previous posts), it looks weird, but well, I guess B-movies were weird and didn't make any sense most of the time :P

David - thanks! :) glad that you like it
Fer - graciaaaas! I like the idea of the woman resting on the broom, I tried it in this new one with the woman in the back but I think I didn't get the right pose, I'd need to keep trying :)
Piotr - thank you for those ideas, yes, I need to experiment a bit more with the background, although I didn't want it to be very complicated... I've also removed the helmet from the girl in this last one, but I'm not very sure of what hat you were talking about, hehe... first idea was to make her an alien (a low-cost one, just painting her face red) but maybe I should chage her to the regular damsel in distress... we will see...

browndljr
02-09-2010, 09:51 PM
I think you are correct, all cleaning ladies makes more sense, from a B-movie perspective. What if the female protagonist were clutching something the cleaning ladies wanted? Toilet paper? Plunger? Keep going, it is great!

Thanks Fer! I think that if there were a prize for the most collaborative person in this challenge, you'd have good chances to win it! you seem to be in every thread I look, and always commenting after my updates! (in fact I think there was such a prize some challenges ago but I think they are no longer doing it...)

I've been working a bit on this today, but I don't think its worth showing yet...
Today I decided the exact location where the action will be happening, it's here:
http://www.gaitasfritas.es/pruebas/IMG_0298p.jpg

This is an abandoned lighthouse in Denmark, it's called Rubjerg Knude Fyr, and it's been abandoned and rehabilitated several times, but the wind there is so strong that it's moving those sand dunes constantly, even the coast line is moving backwards, so they finally gave up against nature and abandoned it definitely... some houses are completely buried in sand, some are just partially destroyed... I really liked this place and I thought it would be nice to have it in my image, as some kind of tribute to those months I spent in Denmark some time ago...

Also, back to photoshop, i discovered today a useful trick, which will surely be obvious to most of you, but anyway... I found out that if I group several layers into a folder, all in normal mode, and then I set the group (folder) mode to multiply, I can have the layers inside the group adding to each other, and at the same time they are all multiplying to the rest of layers underneath... this way I can have things "hiding" behind other stuff inside the folder easily, like you do in normal mode, but then all of them are multiplying (or overlaying or anything else) against the rest of the image... not sure if I explained it well, it doesn't sound so impressive now, but for me it was a nice finding...

ok, that's enough for today, I'll go and get some sleep... I'll try to update tomorrow!
cheers!

I used a pic of my lighthouse in the background as a ref, and I started throwing some values...
I think that setting the right values at the beginning should really help a lot to achieve a believable shading at the end... not sure I did it good enough, though, what do you think, is something too dark? too clear? too contrasty or lacking contrast in some areas?

Nice! I think you have a strong composition there. The value scale is pretty good. The rim lighting is working well, maybe you could slightly increase the reflected light on the primary characters in the fore ground? I absolutely love the character that is "snapping on" the glove. I especially like the dynamic quality of the piece itself, with the curvature in the fore ground creating motion and the lighthouse pulling you up and then having the lights lead you back into the piece. Keep going!

I've been refining the values and I'll keep doing it for a bit more yet, but meanwhile here's some tests I did trying some color compositions... I wanted to apply the theory that says that warm colors come closer and cooler ones go in the back... for the moment I think I prefer the bottom one, although characters wont be so monochromatic at the end...
I've also been playing with the lighthouse light... not sure where to place it, and I've seen that usually lighthouses have just one light beam, but if I remove one half it doesn't look balanced...

Thanks for your comments guys! :) I really appreciate them, I've tried to implement your suggestions, I don't know if it's any better now... and I'm really happy that you like the composition! :bounce:

cheers everyone!

Hey Fer,

Like your color test. Think the bottom one can work really well, the purple tone for the background puts a nice B-Movie atmosphere on the image. Agree with you about the beam from the lighthouse, think in that position make balanced the image and not distrat for the action.

Great work and waiting for more updates!. Cheers!!

I've decided to detail the whole image in just black and white, and add the colors later... it's something I've seen some people doing lots of times but I've never tried, so here I am...
for the moment just these 3 ladies finished, the rest will come, hopefully this week I should have free time for this..

Hey, it's looking really nice! Of the color tests, I think the top 2 work better than the bottom one, because with those, you've got a nice warm/cool contrast between foreground and back. I slightly prefer #2 as I just like blue and orange more, but that's totally subjective.

I'm leaving out a lot of the line art this time around too. I'll respond to your question in my thread in more detail, though. My only crit would be that the heroes have such energetic, dynamic poses and the bad guys are a lot more static, less dynamic. Like this last guy you posted - he's not even threatening them, just leaning on his broom, not about to clobber them with it or anything. Just seems a little mismatched.
But either way, good luck with the rest!

I can see Walrus' point with the non-threatening pose of the one leaning on the broom. But I can also imagine that the zombie cleaning lady is pausing for a moment to savor the anticipated feast! lol The drool helps. Seriously I don't have a problem with the poses, I think the characters put you in mind of what (elderly?) maybe run-down and tired cleaning ladies would really look like and that makes it funny to think that even though they are zombies they are still stuck to move and act like old ladies. Great job.

elmasfeo
03-03-2010, 12:26 PM
walrus - hey, thanks a lot for your crits!...so...yes, I think you are right with the poses, most of them are quite stiff... the reason for that is that they were supposed to be moving really slow, just closing the circle around them, moving like zombies... but still, even zombies have some kind of movement and better poses, so I will try to make some changes so that they match the rest of the image better, although I don't think I'll change much (one leg here, an arm there... should be enough... maybe) well I don't know, we will see...

Freelah - hey, another Fernando! thanks for posting, I'm glad that you like the lighting, thank you! :)

Fer el de las chelas - hey, thanks again, well I think I will try some changes in the poses, because I see walrus point, but they will never be close to the dynamism of the main characters... well I don't know, I have to try, there is still a bit of time for experimentation ;)

David - hmm, I'm still not sure wether to make them zombies or not, all of you seem to like the idea, and I reckon that it makes more sense, but for the moment they are not zombies, just evil-possessed cleaning ladies... maybe I could make them like "cheap" zombies, covered in blood and dirt, like that big guy from plan 9 from outer space, or like people dressed up as zombies, instead of actual corpses full of holes and rottening, which I personally don't like so much... thanks for your comments!! :wise:

walrus
03-03-2010, 01:35 PM
Ah, okay, if they're zombies then they don't need super action poses. What I didn't get from looking at your image was that they were supposed to be zombies, just creepy old people. (Who sometimes drool, too!) Maybe a clawed hand reaching out here or there, some tattered clothing (or skin!) might help send that message. Good luck!

Interesting concept man, I really like the idea. I can already figure the name of the movie: "The village of the Damn Old":p

I like the second color test, for me it´s the one that allows for more constrast & detailing between heroes/old guys and also supports a bit of fog to enhance the mood.

Waiting for the updates...

Aztan - yay, thanks for the suggestion, hehe, I had no idea of how to entitle it, for the moment I was going for "A gangster with a shotgun and the princess from Mars VS the evil-possesed cleaning ladies in the lost lighthouse", but I think it's quite long :D ...just joking... or maybe not
I think that for the background I'll go for purple near the horizon and darker blue in the sky, that could be a good compromise between the 2 last options...

walrus - yes, well, I guess they are zombies now, hehe, it wasn't even clear in my mind, so it's not clear cause they are not zombies... yet. Perhaps they are really recent fresh zombies, they didn't have time to rotten much :D

I've spent some time detailing the main characters, I'm more or less satisfied with them, and I've also worked a bit in those 2 evil cleaning ladies in the far background, making them a bit more active, and zombifying them... I think they will be more like infected or possesed by a virus, than dead people back from the cemetery, so specially in the ones that are closer I will add "something" to their skin, break their clothes, and that's it...

I think I finished shading everything in the image, except maybe some touches in the floor and background...
so this last week I'll complete the color, I will try to do a traditional watercolor for the background color, scan it, and overlay it to get some nice textures... I've never done anything like that before, but I enjoy experimenting ;P

Thanks Fer, I made the foreground characters darker and more contrasty, does it look better now?

This morning I painted the background with watercolors, which I think gives some nice textures, the only problem is that characters, being on top of that, wont have those textures, so I will have to give them some new textures at the end...
I have started also giving some basic colors to the characters, I have no idea of what to do with the girl, her face is red at the moment cause she's supposed to be from Mars, but I'm not sure that it reads well...

Aztan
03-15-2010, 08:57 PM
Looking good man... it really worked giving the main characters more contrasting colors.
Why dont you try blurring the granny in the front a little, to get a DoF effect.
And about the mars princess, you are right, it doesnt work that well the red tone for her skin, probably because its in the same color range of the old zombies. Why dont you try with a green color for her skin (I know... its a cliche the "green men from Mars") but probably it will give you a nice contrast with the purple tones of the background. Im quite sure it will attract the eye to the main characters :p (even in the thumbnail).

Just one final push man!! Good luck!! I will be waiting for your final piece:thumbsup:

Hey Fer,

Like the color palette on the image. The texture on the lighting house looks really nice.
Maybe, like you say, the red face for the girl don´t read well. Perhaps you can go for a pale green or pale blue ( a bit on cyan value). I think that the gloves can be a bit more red and you can add a pair of red boots for the girl. Only silly ideas :D

Great work and waiting for more updates. Cheers!! (no mas chelas en estos últimos días, sino no acabas :D)

This is looking really good. I like the perspective and palette you're using. Your character designs great. About your Martian Princess, what about changing the colour of her costume instead? Perhaps that'd bring out the redness in her skin? Try any alternatives as thumbnails first to eliminate any detail and you'll be able to see more clearly what works.

All the best man.

Thanks for your comments guys! :)
I've followed your suggestions and changed the color of her skin to green, because red wasn't working no matter what I did with her clothes, and blue, well blue could have looked good one year ago but now it would look like some kind of weird avatar imitation...

Octavio - well, I think that cliches are ok in this case, B-movies are full of cliches, so I've followed your suggestion and made her green... and about the DoF effect, personally I don't like it, it's just a matter of personal taste... thanks for your ideas!

Fer - yup! red boots and gloves, thank you compadre! no beers? so... tequilas then?

Anthony - thanks for your post! I've been trying your suggestion today, I've spent several hours selecting different pieces and adjusting the colors, but at the end the red face wasn't looking good, she looked like she had some heavy sunburn or something... thank you!

I've spent some hours today adjusting the colors of the characters, specially the girl... as suggested, I changed her skin color to green, and added some other small touches of green to the image to compensate it... I found it a bit difficult to keep some kind of color balance to the image and not to turn it into a rainbow... I'm still not completely satisfied with it but I think it looks better...

It's looking nice, not at all rainbowy. The darker values on the characters work well to make them pop. I like the green on the woman - it's really clear now that she's an alien. I find it a little odd how the cut-out ovals on her legs are 2 different sizes between the inside and outside of her thighs... do you even need the inside-thigh one?
not sure what else you have to do with it, though. Looks pretty close to me. Good luck!

thanks walrus! Really appreciated! Well, it might look good for you already, but that's because you are not seeing any close ups, hehe... All those colors are just quickly laid in, not respecting the borders between shapes at all, so I still have to work on it... I think you are right about those green holes in her legs, I think I'll erase the inner one, or give it a different shape... Thanks for noticing! :)

James Grilleto, a.k.a. Jimmy Trigger, a.k.a. Jim Easy-finger, a.k.a. Jimmy Silent, had never imagined himself in such situation. It should have been an easy job, just a short visit to a farmer who lived close to the seaside, but his trip was suddenly interrupted when his car was halted by those mysterious lights, and in few seconds he was surrounded by strange green men... That was a mere 5 hours ago, but it seemed like ages now, somehow, as hard to believe as it can be, and with the whole humanity to choose from, the Queen of these foreign green people had fall in love with him, and now they were both in big trouble, being attacked by an horde of old women...
Apparently, the green men did not come alone, they had brought some viruses with them, innocent viruses, which in contact with the cleaning products from Earth, mutated and attacked those who were closer to them in that moment: the cleaning ladies. A couple of hours after the first mutation, all the cleaning ladies in the state had run amok, possessed by the evil virus, and now they were attacking every living being on their way...
As Jim prepared to fight until death the horde of grannies that was slowly surrounding them, he thought... -If only her skin wasn't that lovely green color, none of this would've happened... if only I had told her that I am gay...

there you go, Piotr ;)

Thanks a big lot to everyone who helped me with their comments and ideas (crazy ideas are thanked too), getting and giving feedback is the best part of these challenges, I've learned a lot seeing you guys working...

So I think it's finished for the moment, I wanted to add rain but I didn't have time enough, so maybe I will continue it and post the result in this thread, for those of you who are subscribed to it... I did a quick test and I think it looks better and much more dramatic, but I would need to make the characters' skin look wet, the hair, and the floor too would be affected... and that's too many changes for the last moment...

I hope you like it! :)

Hey Fer,

Great image !! love the light on it , fantastic mood . The lighting bouncing on the floor to the characters is really cool , puts a great touch on the image, a feel of tension and drama :D

The story of James Grilleto ( en esto lares conocido como Jaime "El Gatillero" :D) is simply great, cool for a little animated short. The final twist on the story is fantastic. :D

Congratulations for your great finale my friend! All the best and yes!!! time for "hartas chelas bien moridas" ( Translation = Time for a lot of cold beer :D) and lot of tequila shots and a few cubatas .. ok, ok a lot of cubatas hahahaha :D Cheers my friend!!

At the end I forgot to turn on one layer that would turn red the bounced light coming from below... :banghead:
well, not really important anyway...

Thanks for your posts guys! I'm glad that you like it :) and glad that some of you liked the story as well, hehe, I did my best to come up with an explanation for this crazy mix :D although I'm not a writer at all, and much less an english-witer...

so, here you have some close-ups and a bigger res version...

- oh my god, can anything else go wrong? - thought Jimmy just before feeling the first raindrop...

this weather is so unpredictable... just after the challenge ended it started raining! :D

ok, seriously, before I add this to my portfolio I wanted to play a bit more with the idea of the rain... what do you think? I would make them look wet, and the floor too, but I think you can get a general feel with this:

I'm not sure I like it, when I've showed it to people they've said that it looks like laser beams coming from the sky... so either I try to make it better, or I close this project as it is now, and turn a new page... opinions? can I still ask for opinions after the challenge is over? ;)

Nice one. Very silly concept and great background story! I love how she clutches the roll of toilet paper as if it is the most precious thing to hold on to when threatened by mutating cleaning ladies!
As for opinions on your post-final changes, I must admit that I prefer the version without the rain. That dense (and drawn as unbroken lines) it is too distracting IMHO. Done more subtle it might turn out different.
PS: Rain also means you should render your materials shinier and darker to make them appear wet - and the end of toilet paper wouldn't float like this when soaked!

Really cool final piece mate!!! And the twist in the story, that´s just great.
I like how the central characters turn in the end, the color scheme works very well... and the details... the wart in the old ladies are a nice touch. :D

About the rain... I agree with archaeotect, it looks better without it, altough if you really want to work more and add rain to your scene, probably you should try something a little more blurry and/or with broken lines and probably a puddle or two...

Thank you guys! :)
The toilet paper was in fact an idea from browndljr here in this thread, I really liked the idea, so I put it there... and although it doesn't appear in the short story I wrote, there is a reason for the toilet paper, but you will have to watch the full movie to know! :D (ok, I forgot about it when writing, and it would've been too long anyway, hehe)
I think I agree with you, I will call it finished and forget about the rain... I'll save the idea for some future image, if properly done it could add a lot of drama to any image!

thanks for your words!
