I believe gmax is just a scaled down version of max. Max should be able to do anything that its free sister program can do.

Well gMAS supports what discreet calls "game packages" or whatever, that are modules a gamedeveloper makes that changes the gMAX interface around to suit the specific needs of a particular game. Like placing entities, hints for the AI, destroyable walls or whatever crap that's supported. So if you go load up the.. say, Quake 3 gamemodule, you'll supposedly get access to tools much more suitable for making levels than just the standard gMAX interface.

It's a neat idea, though for me it's all theoretical, I've yet to play a game that actually utilizes it. But so yeah, there's a little more to gMAX than meets the eye. Or so discreet claims.

Gaggle is right, adding my two cents, GMAX is basically a tool specific max to make games. You won't have fancy stuff like a render button or Multiple texture channels, aside from the few it gives you for standard engines to recognize. It limits you so you won't do something that isn't allowed in-game. Hope that helps.

Good Luck

Think of it sorta as discreets Max learning edition...sorta. I personally think it was developed so that mod guys would'nt pirate the full version. If you have max, you will never need gmax.
