View Full Version : Live action with Maxwell, how? Use Background equivalent?

I'm trying to render out some tests using the Maxwell demo. I would ask at the Maxwell forums but they lock out everyone except license holders - lame idea if you ask me.
Anyhow, when I import live action footage as the camera image plane and assign the "Use Background" maya shader, I get exactly what I want, nice shadows "on the footage" if you will.
The problem using this technique, I'm stuck with the Maya software render engine. Is this type of thing possible with Maxwell?
I can't figure this out.

in the Environment rollout under Render Settings/Maxwell Render, there's a background pic setting.

I must be doing something wrong. I load an image to the background Maxwell channel, (tried PNG, TGA, TIF) and when I hit render, I just get the blue sky. No hint of any BG image.
Tried the Latest and previous Maxwell/Maya plugin too.
Thanks for the reply BTW!

Ah ok. I'm not trying to do HDR lighting. I mean an actual image sequence (attached to camera as image plane) like from a video. So I shoot some live video of a table and I want to put a 3D object on it. So if I align a plane to the background image of the table and use the Maya "use background" material, the shadow will look as if it's falling on the table.
This is what I'm trying to do with maxwell
does that make any sense?

ah sorry - dumb me. That texture node isn't supported by Maxwell. You'll need to composite the images separately in AE or Nuke or whatever. To make a shadow pass, you have to create a shadow catcher and in the Maxwell material options, set it to Shadow (it will only show up in the render passes now) and then in the Render Settings, turn on the Shadow Render Channel.
you can view the shadow pass while rendering if you click the S circle at the top left of Maxwell when it's rendering.

I suspected as much! :D
Thank you for confirmation. Was really hoping the "Use Background" Maya shader would auto translate to Maxwell. Would save me a huge headache for quick tests - no need for external compositing.
Thanks for all the help!
