View Full Version : Loads of LOTR Models: C&C Desperately Needed
DoctorStopMo 08-26-2003, 09:38 PM I'm involved in an amateur LOTR game project, which will be an isometric game (think Diablo or Baldur's Gate). I'm not happy with the way a lot of my models came out - I don't have that much experience and have no instruction - so I was wondering if people could give me some suggestions on how to make my models better. These are all rendered from the freeware Anim8or, which I like to use as a modeler, but will be rendered in some other piece of software for the final product. On a final note, none of them are textured yet. I sort of suck at texturing anyway. Not sure how many pics/post I'm allowed, so I'll make separate posts for the different models that have been finished so far. Here's the first, the balrog:

The rest I'll just make links for those without high bandwidth. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

judging solely on the level of detail, these models look much too high poly for a game.

Jbo123 hes making them to use as pre-rendered sprites:p

No, Nick, I can't get enough C&C over @ Anim8or :P. I have at least 6 major models on one thread and I have 80-some replies. Compare that to Bobbo, who has one WIP, 37 replies, TheArmenian, with one model and 71 replies, and mattx5, one model, 41 replies. People over there must really hate me or something :P.
Yes, these models are too high poly to be used directly in a 3D game. They're being used to render 2D versions of sprites. That's becoming a term that'll confuse any but those who are familiar with the days of Nintendo :). I want photo- or near-photorealistic quality for these, especially because they will also be used in making FMV cutscenes in the game. Since there is the added disadvantage that it is not a 3D game, it's got to look as gorgeous as humanly possible, which is why I want tips from people who know what they're doing and have more experience than I do. I'm going to try to texture these, but I Generally work in phases – modeling, texturing, rigging, animating, so I’ll make all the models, then texture, then rig, and whatnot. Maybe this isn’t the best sort of workflow. I don’t know. I’ve never worked on anything this big before. I don’t have much experience with texturing. In fact, I suck at it. A whole bunch. And I don’t have PhotoShop.

Woooo LOTR stuff :buttrock: No matter how much of it I see, I never get sick of it
DoctorStopMo, that's quite a collection of models you're creating here! But slow down a bit, you seem to be leaving some models slightly unfinished, or in need of tweaking :)
The balrog - looking ok so far. His face seems a bit flat though. The fin down his back looks like it has no depth, and his wings and parts of his torso look a little blocky. The ends of the horns also seem to have no depth - it's like you've squashed the polys too much. This problem appears on most of your models actually.
The uruk hai is probably the best looking one so far, although he also seems a bit chunky. His hair also seems to be suffering from this thin look... His feet need some work, they are too blocky. His armour plates also look a little too blocky.
The elven warrior needs a lot of tweaking still. His limbs are blocky, and the armour is too. His cloak needs a lot more reshaping to get it to look like soft flowing fabric. His legs seem strangely proportioned, and the feet, like the uruks, need a lot of reshaping as well. Where is his head?
Gwaihir's beak seems unfinished, especially at the tip where the polys don't seem to flow correctly inwards and under. He will probably look a lot better once textured, and you should add feathers to his body.
The wraith horse is off to a good start, but again is too blocky. Remember that with organic forms you need a lot more softness and musculature :)
The watcher is still a little too early to really comment on...
Keep going, mostly your models just need tweaks here and there...

Thanks, Leigh :). Um, I haven't got that much experience modeling - these are some of my first models. The Balrog was the very first model I did, then I made a cave troll, then revisited Balrog and that's what you see here. Isn't his head supposed to be flat? The blockiness issue is something I have a lot of trouble with because my computer is old and it sucks and anything over 6,000 polies causes it to move like a rock. A lot of the models here aren't subdivided yet, because renders with 2 subdivisions crash my computer. I have a godawful time with anything cloth: are there any tips or tutorials I could follow? Sadly, college expenses (I have to pay for my own) don't allow me to get software that has cloth animation built in. The Elf's head is AWOL for now..it's somewhere on my HD, but I just moved back to my dorm and things are a little hectic. I'll post some updates as soon as I get everything organized :).
