Small compact hand scanner, rechargeable battery, can store thousands of images onboard

I've not used any "hand" scanners before but I don't think I'd trust one for anything more than a business card or invoice. A small camera is a good idea like already pointed out, or Canon makes a series of LED illuminated scanners which are very thin and run entirely from the power on the USB port (instead of a fluorescent bulb). I used one in their first generation a few years ago and it was excellent (sold it to buy a scanner for negatives in the end). They are thin enough to go in the bag with the laptop and there wouldn't be any extra bulk from a power supply since it runs on power from USB. Not sure what model it was but the series is called Canon LiDE. Cheers!

Many years ago I used a hand scanner which you had to roll across the page. On the screen it had a 'speed bar' which showed how fast you were moving your hand and if you went too fast is would screw up the scan....I'm sure things have moved on now but I still remember it.

Just to throw a spanner in the works...have you tried colors on the Nintendo DS? Obviously using a graphics tablet would negate the need for a scanner to scan in sketches but it's not very convenient when you want to quickly scribble something down on the bus or in a cafe....The DS is much more like a sketchbook but colors allows you to paint in full colour with pressure sensitive strokes. The pictures are saved as .png's onto a memory card as well as another format which preserves your brush stroke history and allows you to play it all back.
