Has anyone else out there noticed anything strange about toon renders in the latest releases? I use a setup borrowed from Matthew Krick's suggestions on his website (http://www.demented3d.com). It basically uses some global ambience to keep the shadows from getting pitch black (remember we're talking toon renders here). Lately it seems that the global ambience still does this but also adds its value to whatever lights you have in the scene. The end result is that it washes out your scene so that what should appear (and has before) as just a full value solid color, now appears as white.

I can't figure out why anything would be washed out in a scene where the ambience is set to 35%, the ONE light is set to 40% and the subject uses a simple 'anime' gradient for shading.

Anybody have some insight / experience to share?

This one has no global ambience and one sun-type light at 40%.

This one has global ambience set to 35% and no changes to the light.

The effect this setup used to get (if I remember correctly) was that I'd get the skin-tone of the top image with shadowing of the lower image. Now, no worky.

Now do people see what I mean a little better?

One possible solution that I am trying is to reduce my light's shadow darkness to something like 50% and keep global ambience at 0%. Maybe this will re-create the effect I'm after...
