View Full Version : I have a question about wacom tablets.
Girn26 08-26-2003, 09:01 PM Ok, im getting the graphire 2 tablet real soon. And im wondering, would it help me out a lot for making skins and textures? Im not into the sketching and painting stuff. I just make textures for game objects. Im getting the tablet cuz I think it will help me make the textures a lot faster. What do you guys think?

Yeah it really helps i got a Graphire2 too and its a really
big help. A Intous 2 would be better but for a start a
Graphire 2 is just great. There is nothing better for
hand drawing you have never the same precision with a
Mouse then a tablet pen.Wacom+Painter 8 = Kick Ass

Someone said once that drawing with the mouse is like drawing with a potato... so true. Drawing with a stylus is much more natural, that is if you're already comfortable drawing with a real-world pencill/pen/brush.

im actually not gonna get it, since I just do textures and dont paint or draw on the computer. So in my case, it would be a waste of money.

Getting a Wacom tablet is not a waste of money!
Even if you 'just do textures' on the computer you will find that you are doing small painting stuff. You can paint over an existing texture with a small brush to enhance details, or you can use a bigger brush to sketch masks for rust and stuff. Making textures with a Wacom is so much better than the jerky reaction of a mouse.

A tablet is a great buy for any 3d artist, I found misself using the pen for almost everithing, for instance modeling in maya feels more natural to me with it and its much easier for your wrists, it saves you from the carpian tunel syndrome.

It really depends on how you define "textures".
You are obviously talking about plain seamless photos.
Textures to me are a lot more than that. I usually spend up to 20 hours (on a hi res texture such as 1024) to add color variation, small details, or generally paint whole areas from scratch. Check out the last page of the "HOW TO PAINT GAME TEXTURES" thread in the game design forum to see my latest piece.
I got a Wacom last December and my texture quality and workflow have increased ever since.
You should definitely get one.

I mean making skins for airplanes/guns etc. I dont mean making textures. I use to want it, now I guess my mind just changed and I dont feel the need to get it.
