View Full Version : WIP The Mrs.
blue2k 08-26-2003, 08:51 PM Id apprieciate any help on lighting tips for this piece, it kinda looks like an old master right now but it has that "haziness" about it. should I sharpen it or leave it with that "dreamlike" quality about it? Any comments in a constructive way would be apprieciated.

Oooh, I really like this one. I like the dreamlike quality.
I think it's very diffucult to make all the details in a picture flow together, but you've done it smoothly.
I have but one small crit; her eyes, more precisely her pupil, it looks a bit jagged and sharp against the rest of the picture which is rounded and smooth. That can be easily fixed imo.
Beautiful work you have right there!

thanks a lot, im still trying to get "life" in the eyes and so far im only mildly pleased with the results. the picture is quite grainy but this is the jpeg compression, the unaltered version is a 5 meg .tiff and although it has about 0.10% noise added to it to break up the skin it is nowhere near as grainy as this smaller version.
Im glad you like this.

Hi blue2k,
This is a great piece. On first look, the lighting is a bit dull, I agree. But the soft rendering really works with that. Looks a bit like "tempera" technique (no idea if that's the correct English word also).
If you want to experiment with different lighting, try to pick a lightsource not straight in the face, but from a side or maybe even the back. And add a lot more contrast. (But save this one also!!!)
Eyes look a bit too graphic IMO, and there's no shadow under the eyelids. And I would change the colour of the background to a colour that's also in the rest of the piece. There's no green in her face, so the back draws too much attention IMO.
My 2cents.
Cheers, Jeroen
(btw, there's a 404 after the frontpage of your website)

thanks for your reply, im not sure what "tempera is" but i shall endevour to find out :). The background was just my backing colour to make the piece stand out, just a simple contrast colour to bring attention to the face, its only a temp placeholder. I wanted the eyes to be the focus of the whole piece, like those old master paintings where they seem to follow you around the room, maybe i overdid those :) good advice thanks.
